The Imaginarium of Doctor ParnassusRelease Date: December 25, 2009 (limited)
Plot Summary: "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary 'Imaginarium', a traveling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick.
Valentina is now rapidly approaching this 'coming of age' milestone and Dr Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls. Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr Parnassus promises his daughter's hand in marriage to the man that helps him win. In this captivating, explosive and wonderfully imaginative race against time, Dr Parnassus must fight to save his daughter in a never-ending landscape of surreal obstacles - and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all.

Ahem: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Gets American Distribution
By
Jeffrey Bloomer
on August 14, 2009 8:20 AMOn the heels of its wacko new trailer, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has finally secured American distribution with Sony Pictures Classics.
The release date for Heath Ledger’s last role hasn’t been settled yet, but for some reason, most blogs speculate that Christmas Day is likely. In any case, Variety says, expect to see it in American theaters this year.Terry Gilliam’s film, about the head of a theater troupe and his deal with the devil, has waged a prolonged battle to find a distributor in the U.S. despite its cultural significance and cast (which also includes Johnny Depp and, frankly, we really can't say this enough, Tom Waits as the devil, among others). We're ready.

Johnny Depp Brings 'Imaginarium' To Life
As a huge Terry Gilliam fan, I was looking forward to "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" when it was just Heath Ledger's next movie. Then it became Heath Ledger's last movie and I wanted to see it even more. Then Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law came aboard as substitutes for Heath's character in the fantasy sequences and my fan-ticipation reached ridiculous levels.
Now with its Dec. 25 release date inching closer, a full-on trailer has debuted and, well, the intoxicating imagery hasn't done anything to quell my expectations. In addition to explaining the story for the uninitiated, fans can glimpse the movie's mind-blowing special effects, plus peep Johnny, Jude and Colin in character for the first time.
It's sure to be another wonderfully warped ride on the Gilliam express that most of America will avoid like the plague and us lone few will tout to be the second coming of cinema's most inventive director!
The Trailer is here.
From the Comic Con site:4:30-5:15 Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus— Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of both Comic-Con and Monty Python, we welcome the sole American Python, the great animator and director Terry Gilliam (Time Bandits, Brazil, 12 Monkeys) to introduce you to his new film starring Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger, Colin Farrell, Jude Law, Verne Troyer, Tom Waits, and Lily Cole. Dr. Parnassus is a fabulous anachronism, touring the streets of modern-day London in a horse-drawn carnival wagon accompanied by his beautiful daughter, devoted dwarf, and neophyte barker. On stage Parnassus plays a holy man whose Imaginarium can realize the innermost fantasies of all who dare to enter. Backstage, he is a drunkard, a gambler who centuries ago lost a wager with the Devil and must now pony up with his daughter once she turns sixteen. Tomorrow. Yet, there may still be hope for the Doctor and Valentina in the person of Tony, a well-dressed amnesic they rescue from a perilous fate and invite into their world of unrelenting magic and possibility.
