On Location: The Johnny Depp Cover Shoot in San Juan, Puerto Rico
by Ron Beinner
June 5, 2009, 12:10 PM
(excerpt)
A few months ago, the Vanity Fair photo department was asked to prepare for yet another adventure: this time, a cover shoot with the charming Johnny Depp at a beautiful international location. The photos would accompany a profile of the actor being written by contributing editor (and Depp pal) Douglas Brinkley for the July issue. Our original plan was to rendezvous with Depp, photographer François-Marie Banier, and a V.F. fashion team in Paris, where we’d been told Depp would be staying and where François-Marie is based. But it was not to be. Depp was headed to his private island in the Bahamas, and we awaited an e-mail or a Twitter message for further details. At last, we got word—that our cover subject would be traveling to Puerto Rico to shoot a film adaptation of The Rum Diary, a book by his late friend Hunter S. Thompson, and that we could meet him in Old San Juan for an afternoon photo session.Located on a small peninsula just west of the main city, Old San Juan offered countless photographic options—brightly colored Spanish-colonial architecture, beautiful views of the Caribbean Ocean and the Bay of San Juan, an ancient citadel—but time was tight to scout for locations. We were up for anything that could help us produce interesting photographs, but our main goal was a historic residence—a town house or a bungalow—with architectural charm, gardens, and a view of the water, so that we’d have a variety of backdrops for the shots—inside, outside, vistas. And ideally it would be in a secluded spot, to avoid any interruption from Depp’s large local fan base.
V.F.’s photography director, Susan White, and I booked rooms near Old San Juan at the Caribe Hilton hotel, which would serve as base camp for The Rum Diary crew. (I’m a contributing photography producer at the magazine, and I was producing François-Marie’s shoot.) Depp would be staying offshore, however, in his yacht, the Vajoliroja. Susan and I also arranged to visit some potential locations through San Juan native Sofia Tirado, who would serve as our guide and translator during the trip.
The hunt was on!
We secured a 1959 Fiat 500 N from the Rum Diary set (the crew was incredibly helpful throughout our stay in San Juan), and called up a laundry company to ask whether they'd be willing to drop off one of their trucks at the shoot. Earlier in the day, François-Marie had spied a truck fancifully decorated with a picture of a bride on its side and had fallen in love in with her. He thought Depp might, too.
Back at the Hilton, the Rum Diary crew was filming in the lobby, now a wonderland of 1950s décor. Extras in period dress wandered about and soon we spotted Johnny Depp, costumed as Hunter S. Thompson. Filming continued until after 4:00 am, we were told later.
Early in the afternoon, we received word that Johnny Depp had departed his yacht right on time and would meet us en route to La Fortaleza at the bungalow (the one with the pretty front porch) for a few pictures. At one point after he arrived, Depp picked up his guitar and serenaded us, prompting François-Marie to begin the shoot. The afternoon light was glorious, and we noticed that it was only getting better, so we dashed to La Fortaleza, where we’d planned to have the bulk of the shoot.
V.F. men’s wear editor Sam Broekema and stylist Samantha McMillen worked with Depp to mix some pieces in his wardrobe with the magazine’s assortment of Giorgio Armani and Zegna suits, Prada, Gucci, and J. Crew shirts, and vintage hats.
François-Marie shot Depp all over La Fortaleza’s grounds. During the shoot the crew was treated to savories and sweets from caterer Jose Santaella and soon a few cold Coronas mysteriously appeared (and even made it into a few photographs).![]()
We used props like the baby-blue mini Fiat.
François-Marie was right: Depp did like our laundry truck—he even kissed the bride!Depp, François-Marie, and the crew continued shooting until the sun had set on Old San Juan.
