Shopaholic's Isla Fisher morphs into Rango's gun-toting lizardIsla Fisher told SCI FI Wire that she's the voice of a gun-toting lizard in the upcoming animated movie Rango.
The film, directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean), stars Johnny Depp as a household pet who embarks on an adventure to discover his true self. In addition to Fisher and Depp, the voice cast includes Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone and Ned Beatty.
Fisher spoke about Rango last month while promoting her current film, Confessions of a Shopaholic. Followed are edited excerpts of the exclusive interview with Fisher. Rango is slated for release in March 2011.
What are you voicing for Rango?
Fisher: I'm playing a lizard. I'm a hard lizard. It's just a lot of fun. I get to tote a gun, and it's just been a completely different experience from anything I have done before.
Is it you in a recording studio by yourself, or do you get to interact with anyone else?
Fisher: That's what's so interesting about Gore Verbinski's process. We're shooting it like a play. So we're all on stage, and we act it out, and he shoots it with cameras. Then he's going to animate the characters to match our faces.
That's unusual, especially for a feature. Everyone involved generally meets one another at the premiere.
Fisher: Absolutely. When I did Horton Hears a Who!, I was just alone with the director in a booth. I'm really enjoying this process. It really adds such depth to the performance to actually see the other actor you're interacting with and to experience it, rather than just be alone in a booth.

Johnny Depp Plays Pet
Posted By: Beth LevinBuzz has been disappointingly minimal for our favorite pirate-clad, scissor-handed demon barber, Johnny Depp. But don't worry—MTV has recently reported that Depp will soon take the form of a household pet in Gore Verbinski’s upcoming animated film, Rango, alongside Confessions of a Shopaholic star Isla Fisher and Little Miss Sunshine’s Abigail Breslin. Apparently, Verbinski plans on stretching the boundaries of animation by initially having the stars act out the movie in order to help the animators reate more realistic portraits of the actors. Hopefully, the animal version of Depp will also has exceptionally pronounced cheekbones and nautical mannerisms.

While talking to Isla Fisher at this weekend’s “Confessions of a Shopaholic” junket, MTV News learned about an exciting bit of casting; Fisher has joined Gore Verbinski’s 2011 animated adventure film, “Rango”.
Already set to star Johnny Depp as a household pet who goes on a fantastic adventure, the film reunites Depp with the “Pirates” director. Fisher is set to voice a lizard that Depp’s character
encounters on his travels. In addition to Depp and Fisher, “Rango” stars Ian Abercrombie and Hemky Madera as well as the just-announced Abigail Breslin.
Fisher also noted that Verbinski is going for a completely original approach to animated filmmaking. The entire movie is being acted out live but, rather than serve as a base for motion capture or rotoscoping, the live version will be used to aide the animators in capturing the characters’ movements and facial features. While it’s not uncommon for a camera to be present in a recording booth for just that reason, Fisher seemed to imply that Verbinski’s approach is much more elaborate, something the director has hinted will allow an unprecedented on-screen focus on the actors.
Though you’d never be able to tell from her acting roles, Fisher’s real voice has a heavy Australian accent. Her performance in “Rango”, though, will be a brand-new voice altogether. Check back tomorrow for the video interview and a chance to hear it for the first time.

Depp and Verbinski Reteam on Rango
Source: Paramount Pictures
September 10, 2008Paramount Pictures has signed Gore Verbinski to direct his first animated feature film Rango, starring Oscar nominee Johnny Depp, who will voice the title character. Release is set for March 2011.
The screenplay was written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street). Rango will be produced by Verbinski's Blind Wink Productions, Graham King (The Departed) and John Carls (Open Season). The animation for Rango will be provided by the San Francisco-based Industrial Light and Magic.
Rango is Verbinski's first animated feature. He directed the "Pirates of the Caribbean" blockbusters, which grossed nearly $2.7 billion worldwide. Depp starred in all three movies as the swashbuckling Jack Sparrow, and earned an Oscar® nomination for the first film.
Verbinski is already experienced in CG animation and will be employing techniques he developed with ILM in the creation of the Davy Jones character in the "Pirates" movies, which won the 2006 Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
"We're delighted to be partnering with Gore Verbinski on 'Rango,'" said John Lesher, President, Paramount Film Group. "The combination of Gore's exciting vision and the talents of John Logan and Johnny Depp make 'Rango' a great tentpole for Paramount's 2011 slate," added Rob Moore, Vice Chairman, Paramount Pictures.
"'Rango' is an oddly charismatic character that is perfectly suited for Johnny Depp's extraordinary abilities," said Verbinski. "The techniques we are employing will allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnny's performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature. This is not a disembodied voice: Johnny Depp is Rango. We are creating something that will resonate with a broad audience and stick in the minds of kids all across the globe. The characters and circumstances are feeling buoyant and rich in humor and attitude, yet with a surprising emotional depth. I am tremendously excited about the support and enthusiasm we have received at Paramount."
