JOHNNY DEPP SWAPS CARIBBEAN FOR CORNWALL IN FOURTH ADVENTUREJOHNNY DEPP will be facing much colder climes when shooting begins on the upcoming PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movie - it will be filmed off the coast of Cornwall, England.
Depp has signed on to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth installment of the swashbuckling film series, entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
And not only will Depp's former co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly be missing from the new venture - the Caribbean sun and clear waters will also be absent.
The first three movies in the franchise were shot at various locations around the Caribbean and the west coast of the U.S.
The film, which will be directed by Chicago film-maker Rob Marshall, will be shot around Cornwall in 2011, according to British newspaper The Sun.
Penelope Cruz has reportedly been approached to star as the film's female lead.

02/27/2010LOS ANGELES—Johnny Depp recently revealed details about the documentary he is making on Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones legend who inspired his Captain Jack Sparrow character in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.
“The Keith Richards documentary came about in a very strange way,” the actor told us in an interview at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood. “Keith and I have spent a lot of time together over the years, whenever he’s off the road and I’m off a film. We would usually end up in the living room of his hotel suite or my house or his place in New York. We would talk and I get all these incredible stories that just haven’t made it out there in the world. I suggested to him that maybe we could try something like that on film and he went, ‘Yeah.’ For a number of years, he was like, ‘Yeah, we’ll see.’ Finally, bless him, he deigned to give it a shot so it’s something that we’re doing together.”
“Keith has been unbelievably generous with his time,” Johnny said of the rock guitarist. “We shot for about five days which I consider the first installment of the piece. The only reason why I’m doing it is because I wanted to capture stuff. There’s no directing really.”
Johnny will be back as Captain Jack in a fourth “Pirates” movie. “I signed on without a script but that was going to be based on the script,” he clarified. “If the script was a real dog, I wouldn’t be doing it. Very happily for me, they’ve involved me in the creative process, in terms of developing the script. They’ve been very welcoming in having me come in and give some ideas.”
Asked about working again with Penelope Cruz in the latest installment titled “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the actor answered, “I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s going to be great. I’ve run into Penelope here and there over the years. She is as funny, sweet and beautiful as ever. I had a wonderful time with her on the movie ‘Blow.’ She was a lot of fun because you could throw anything at her with regard to a scene and she’d catch it and throw something equally surprising back. It was a very stimulating experience for me.”
In Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” Johnny adds the Mad Hatter to his list of colorful roguish characters. But he revealed the tragic story behind his character created by Lewis Carroll in the 19th century from the books “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass.”
Johnny explained: “The M in ‘Mad’ represented mercury for the Hatter. In those days, the hatters used a very toxic glue which contained mercury and which rendered them nuts.”
To play the pivotal part in Burton’s vision of Alice’s wonderland, a digitally created environment inhabited by White Rabbit, Dormouse, Jabberwocky, March Hare and Dodo, Johnny had to act against a tennis ball or a piece of tape in a green screen room.
Johnny said that he welcomed the challenge of acting with inanimate objects: “When you’re working in an environment that is potentially so absurd and ludicrous, something happens. For example, if I’m doing a scene with a tennis ball, something happens that is very different but equally as interesting. I’ve always been fine with being in a giant sound stage surrounded by this horrific color green whereas the majority of the actors and the crew are sick to their stomachs by the end of the day. I enjoyed it because it was so weird that I think it helped what I was doing with Hatter. It was so bizarre.”
He sketched what he thought the Mad Hatter looks like. The only other time he did that was with Captain Jack. He said, “With any character, you start to get these images of what you think they should be. No matter how far out they go, especially with something like this, you have to trust your instinct and I did. So my initial watercolor paintings—with the orange hair, different colors around his eyes—didn’t really change from who we eventually came up with. Tim and I got together. Miraculously, his little drawings of the Hatter were very similar to my watercolor paintings. I knew we were on the right page.”
In our chat, Johnny also shared that he was excited about appearing for the first time with Angelina Jolie in a movie, “The Tourist,” a drama thriller being filmed in Venice. There’s hot buzz about this film because Johnny and Angelina are two of cinema’s most charismatic, attractive actors.
And we may finally get to see Johnny and his wife, singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, in a movie. He disclosed, “The title will be ‘My American Love.’ It’s based on a relationship between Simone de Beauvoir and Nelson Algren who was about as macho and existentialist as one could get without even trying. We’re in the very early stages. The meetings have gone beautifully. Vanessa has done a lot of research on De Beauvoir.” Mr. and Mrs. Depp in a film about the love affair between the American novelist and the French writer and philosopher? We’re there!
Our actor is certainly busy lining up projects. He bared another one: “Tim and I have tossed the idea for ‘Dark Shadows’ over the years. It was a TV program in the States in the late ’60s and early ’70s that I remember watching as a kid. I was obsessed with this character, Barnabas Collins, who was a vampire. I came to find out many years later that when he was a kid, Tim ran home like I did to watch that Gothic soap opera. It was a very strange thing back then.”
He added, “We looked at ways to go, story-wise. We’ve started to come up with something interesting. If all goes well, I will jump into that toward the end of this year.”
When all these projects bog him down, Johnny hies off to his island in the Caribbean or to his retreat in the South of France. “We have a great place down in the South,” he said. “It’s a little hamlet, about 15 hectares. When I go there, I don’t do anything. I wake up and check the garden, see the vegetables growing. It’s a pristine existence. I never talk about movies. More importantly, the phone never rings. We take the kiddies out on walks or picnics. It’s the perfect existence. It’s a very beautiful, simple life.”

Johnny Depp on Jack Sparrow’s Return in Pirates of the Caribbean 4
Saturday, February 20, 2010 3:14PM By Krystal ClarkJohnny Depp has been making his rounds with the media, and at a recent press conference for Alice in Wonderland he talked about his other big movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The actor spoke about the absence of Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, the new director, and those pesky rumors about him not wanting to return to the franchise.
It was confirmed a while ago that Bloom and Knightly wouldn’t reprise their roles in the Pirates series as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan. Therefore, Depp was asked if the new film would be all about his character Jack Sparrow, everyone’s favorite swashbuckler. The actor denied that he would take center stage in On Stranger Tides, instead it will be a collaborative effort for everyone involved.
“There’s no Keira or Orlando in there. I don’t think we’d ever throw too much Jack Sparrow in there. There will be just a little bit of everybody. “
Last year, Disney Chairman Dick Cook resigned from his position at the studio. The announcement took everyone by surprise including Depp who has a great professional and personal relationship with him. After the news broke we started hearing rumors that the actor was unsure about starring in another Pirates film if Cook wasn’t involved. Today he was asked about what it was that changed his mind and his answer might surprise you.
“One thing that I found very reassuring was the conversation, a very good conversation with Dick Cook who’s someone I admire greatly and so yeah, that helped a lot. Also, knowing that we’re coming at it from a different angle at this point with Rob Marshall and a totally new take, new story.”
As you can see it was Dick Cook himself who convinced Depp to continue on with the franchise despite his absence from the project. The actor went on to say that the former Chairman has been very graceful throughout this entire ordeal. Cook sounds like a real class act among the many vultures that populate the industry.
So there you have it, Johnny Depp is completely on board with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but it won’t be the Jack Sparrow show. He’ll be sharing the spotlight with other characters, just not Will and Elizabeth

Hawaii waters being sailed by movie pirate ship Black PearlBy Mike Gordon
Advertiser Staff WriterA famous pirate ship will sail into Hawai'i waters tomorrow, but never fear, matey, it's on a peaceful voyage.
To prepare for the summer filming of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," Walt Disney Pictures is bringing the ship that serves as the Black Pearl to Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor.
Although distinctive, the 130-foot black ship won't look as foreboding as it did on screen, because Disney still needs to dress it up for the fourth installment of the successful film series, said Georja Skinner, administrator for the state's creative services division, which oversees the Hawai'i Film Office.
"It's not all decked out," she said. "There is still work that needs to be done on it. It is coming in so that builds can begin."
The harbor is a secure facility, so the public won't be able to view the ship up close. Find the right crow's nest tomorrow morning, though, and you might catch its 7 a.m. arrival.
The latest installment in the action-adventure series will be shot on Kaua'i and O'ahu and is scheduled for release in summer 2011.
Johnny Depp will once again star as the most lovable pirate ever to wear eyeliner, Capt. Jack Sparrow. The film is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall.
Even without computer-generated images that complete its look on film, the Black Pearl is not all that it seems. On the outside, it looks like a 17th-century warship but — avast! — it's actually a floating facade.
The Black Pearl, which officially bears the name Sunset, was built in 2005 around a 96-foot steel, offshore supply ship by Steiner Shipyard in Bayou La Batre, Ala., then sailed to the West Indies for filming and then to the Bahamas. The voyage to Hawai'i included a stop in Los Angeles.
But arrgh, those masts are for show: The 208-ton light ship has an engine that can move it along at 9 knots.
From MTVPenelope Cruz May Join Johnny Depp In 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'
by Adam Rosenberg in NewsThere's plenty of mystery surrounding "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." We know that Johnny Depp will reprise his Jack Sparrow role. Also, that director Rob Marshall intends to take a fresh approach with the series. And we know that the plot will in some way involve the fabled Fountain of Youth.
Beyond that, there's not been much else to say. As Disney's planned May 2011 release draws closer however, more info is emerging. The latest pegs actress Penelope Cruz as being in the midst of negotiations to join the cast, as revealed on The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog.
I wonder if this casting news has anything to do with Cruz's most recent role, in the Marshall-directed "Nine," for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. There are no specific details provided about the character she would play, though the article does note that she would serve as "Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways." A love interest perhaps? Is Jack Sparrow even capable of such emotions?
There's certainly some cast to be filled out, as we learned only a few weeks ago from the actor himself that Orlando Bloom will not be returning to reprise his role as Will Turner. This echoes Marshall's own comments in December, when he told us that he couldn't commit to Bloom or co-star Keira Knightley coming back.
It will be interesting to see how "On Stranger Tides" develops. While Depp is the undisputed star of the series, the stories have focused primarily on Bloom's Turner and his exploits. Sparrow will presumably be the central focus of the story in the coming outing, though we'll hopefully see Geoffrey Rush reprise his Barbossa role as well. Cruz -- or the character she's up for, at least -- adds an interesting new wrinkle, and lends credence to the idea that Depp will be front-and-center for the coming fourth movie.
From MTVEXCLUSIVE: Rob Marshall Is 'Officially' Talking To Johnny Depp About 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'
Posted 1/20/10 4:00 pm ET by Adam Rosenberg in News
We spoke to "Nine" director Rob Marshall a couple of times towards the end of last year. He'll be the one helming "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which everyone has questions about. Will it be a 3-D release? Where will the story pick up? Will stars Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley return? How about Johnny Depp?
That last question seems to be the most prevalent one in the minds of fans. Fortunately, MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke to Marshall on the Golden Globe Awards red carpet and he got some of the first definitive answers on the subject of Depp and the fourth "Pirates" movie.
"We've now started, officially," he revealed. "I'm talking to Johnny and it's been great. I've been working already. I'm spending a lot of time with [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer. Learning this whole adventure of this... different genre for me, which I feel so at home [with] already."
The genre question is a big one. Marshall is best known for his work on the musicals "Nine" and "Chicago," and on the adaptation "Memoirs of a Geisha." The swashbuckling action of "Pirates of the Caribbean" represents a dramatic shift in tone for him. So we wonder he he'll make this next "Pirates" movie his own.
"I never quite think of myself in terms of putting a stamp on anything. I think we're just trying to bring what's on the page to life, to make the actors as great as they can be, serve them, serve the material."
How might this new director benefit the series, help it grow? What do you think the dangers are, if any, of bringing in such a dramatically different creative talent to oversee the story's telling?

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 shoots in Hawaii this summer
Posted by Matt Holmes on January 19, 2010 – 5:03 pmOn Monday, the Governor of Hawaii Linda Lingle announced in a press release that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides would be taking anchor at the tropical state this summer.
We previously reported that POTC 4 had set a May 20th 2011 release date after Thor took Spider-Man 4’s earlier May opening. So the movie looks good to go and despite the piece I wrote exactly a month ago today, Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) will direct his first Pirates movie, and Johnny Depp will once again star, this time on the voyage for the fountain of youth.
The villainous real-life historical pirate Blackbeard is expected to be the antagonist.
In what appears to be a well planned out corporate move, filming will take place on the islands of Kaua’i and O’ahu – the latter scheduled to open a Disney resort next year. Hawaii is of course the home of ABC’s Lost (network owned by Disney), so once again the Mouse is doing its best to market synergise for a new business venture.
We wouldn’t like to call POTC 4 a commercial for a Disney resort and a chance for Johnny Depp to have fun and make gazillion dollars, but we are sure some will.
Franchise writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have their FOURTH Pirates script (aren’t they not tired of writing dialogue for Jack Sparrow by now?) and Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Barbosa along with supporting players Lee Arenberg (Pintel), Mackenzie Crook (as Ragetti) and Kevin McNally (as Gibbs) - all expected to reprise.
(Note from Kazren: Just last week Jerry Bruckheimer claimed only Johnny Depp has been signed and is certain to appear in Pirates 4)

Johnny Depp and Captian Jack Sparrow Give Hawaii a Boost
By Lauren Le Vine | Wednesday, January 20, 2010 5:28 PM ET
The fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" installment will shoot this summer in Hawaii.
johnnydepp.jpgAhoy, Tonic Pirates of the Caribbean fans! After months of speculation that the beloved franchise may not return for a fourth tumble on the high seas, Johnny Depp has finally signed on to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow. The film's fourth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will begin shooting this summer on the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Kauai. It will be released in theaters in the summer of 2011.
Rob Marshall will pick up the directorial reins, which will be quite a diversion from his normal fare. His last effort was the musical Nine, and he previously scooped up an Oscar for his work on Chicago. Jerry Bruckheimer will produce, but beyond that information, details about the movie are scarce.
The most interesting part of the sequel's announcement is actually who made it. Since this is a Disney film, one would assume that the Mouse House would be quick to put out a press release the instant they secured Depp. In an act of goodwill, however, Disney took a step back and allowed the governor of Hawaii, which has suffered immensely due to the hits the tourism industry has taken as a result of the economic crisis, to announce the new film.
According to MSNBC, Governor Linda Lingle estimates the production will generate $85 million in spending in Hawaii. Bruckheimer released a statement praising the island state for its "amazing range of both land and seascapes." Pirates will be the third big-budget film shot on the Hawaiian islands this year. The other two films, Hereafter (directed by Clint Eastwood) and The Descendants, both feature major stars: Matt Damon and George Clooney, respectively. This writer, for one, thinks Hawaii should start planning some new tourism campaigns based on certain movie shooting schedules. Business will be booming in no time.

Pirates 4' Director Rob Marshall 'Excited' To Work With Johnny Depp
'He's incredible, as an actor and as a person too. So I know it'll be a great experience,' 'Chicago' director said of his lead actor.By Adam Rosenberg, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
When "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was announced for a summer 2011 release, fans went wild. Then the project hit rough waters following the departure of studio chief Dick Cook, a big supporter of "Pirates" star Johnny Depp. The Jack Sparrow actor subsequently expressed hesitation about continuing with the series.
Still, the project sails forward. Depp's not a lock until he signs off on the script, which he hasn't yet seen, but Captain Barbossa actor Geoffrey Rush told MTV in late September that he's been told to keep his schedule open for cameras to roll next spring.
And before any of that took place, in midsummer, word emerged that Rob Marshall, director of the Academy Award-winning "Chicago," is negotiating to direct "On Stranger Tides." So when MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke to Marshall at the press junket for his upcoming musical "Nine," he had to squeeze in a few questions about the status of his work on "Pirates."
"[The deal is] very close to happening, actually," Marshall said. "I'm very excited ... excited to work with Johnny."
It's an unusual change of gears for the series. Gore Verbinski directed the three previous entries, a good pairing of material with the same guy who directed "The Ring" and the Brad Pitt/Julia Roberts-starring action/thriller "The Mexican." Marshall, on the other hand, represents a sharp change in direction, what with his "Chicago" and (soon enough) "Nine" cred — two musicals.
"I think [Disney is] probably looking for a fresh approach," he explained. "I think it's good when you're doing these series' of films, like 'Harry Potter.' It's nice to bring in a fresh approach." The real question is, how does Marshall define "fresh"?
"I don't know yet. Johnny's playing Captain Jack, so that's there," he revealed. "It'll be its own thing. I'll approach it as a film." This confirmation is at odds with that he'd only do another "Pirates" if he read a script that was "worthy of the audience's attention," but Marshall is pretty sure the actor is in.
"You know what, [he's in] as far as I know. The truth is, we all love Dick [Cook]. He's a very special, special man," Marshall explained. "So [his departure from Disney] was hard for everybody. But Johnny is a great guy and we've been looking to work together for awhile, so it's going to be nice to be able to do that, hopefully."
Marshall doesn't have a timetable, though he is certain that "On Stranger Tides" is next for him. Given the musical background, we have to wonder if Depp will get to break into song, especially after his success with Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd" adaptation. And a Jack Sparrow song-and-dance number could be an amazing thing indeed.
"I'm sure we'll do something," Marshall revealed. There'll be a little something in there ... from us. The great thing is that I love Johnny. He's incredible, as an actor and as a person too. So I know it'll be a great experience."
