Johnny Depp: pirate, vampire, and everything in between
July 30, 3:11 PMJohnny Depp is a very busy man.
Not only is he knee-deep in promotion and post-production for Alice in Wonderland, Depp will once again be joining forces with Tim Burton in the vampire flick Dark Shadows, targeted for a 2011 release with filming beginning in 2010. Burton confirmed to the LA Times that Dark Shadows will be his next project as soon as he wraps up post-production on Wonderland.
Burton described the 1960s vampire soap opera as having “the weirdest vibe to it,” and it most certainly will again with Burton and Depp at the helm. The prolific Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil, has optioned the film, and Depp will be taking the lead role of the vampire Barnabus Collins, which he confessed was a “lifelong dream.”
According to IMDb, Depp’s company has over a dozen films in development right now, including 2011’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret, an adaptation of Brian Selznik’s Caldecott-winning novel.
Depp himself is immersed in a variety of acting roles. On the heels of Public Enemies comes Wonderland, The Rum Diary, The Lone Ranger, and Rango (Depp voices the title character). He’s also rumored to be taking part in The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, In the Hands of Dante, The Incredible Mr. Limpet, and Sin City 3.
And who can forget the incomparable Jack Sparrow? Depp is reprising his role in Pirates of the Caribbean 4, which is currently in the script-writing stage and which, according to Disney’s Head of Production Oren Aviv, will begin filming in 2010.
The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters.
This “reboot” will apparently include backstory on Depp’s eccentric character and will possibly be the first in a new trilogy, rather than a sequel to the first. Either way, Pirates fans will be lining up to see it.
As if all this wasn’t enough, Depp is also rumored to be taking on a Frank Sinatra biopic produced and directed by Martin Scorsese. Of course, nothing is confirmed, and there is also a rumor that the role will be taken by Leonardo DiCaprio, so Depp might not end up being connected to the film at all. Then again, there are the other members of the Rat Pack to consider…
Whether Depp characterizes the crooner or not won’t diminish the impact his career has made on modern cinema. Johnny Depp is undisputably one of the best actors of his generation with more than two dozen awards under his belt. All he needs now is an Oscar; maybe one of his many upcoming ventures will get him there... if he doesn't burn out in the attempt.

Depp's next role unclear as green lights delayed
July 22, 2009 by Steven Zeitchik and Borys KitJohnny Depp is coming off an acclaimed role in "Public Enemies" and stars in one of the most anticipated movies of this weekend's Comic-Con, "Alice in Wonderland." Skip related content
But the Mad Hatter is facing an unusual situation: Like the character he plays in "Alice," he soon could be killing time.
Depp is attached to a number of high-profile development properties but is facing a landscape devoid of "go" pictures -- those ready for production. Instead, there are a dizzying number of possibilities and schedule permutations, none of which seems likely to result in a produced movie for him anytime soon.
Producers have been interested in Depp for the title role in Warner Bros.' "The Incredible Mr. Limpet." Kevin Lima's remake of the 1964 fantasy comedy that would continue a whimsical, if slightly less drama-intensive, streak for the actor. He has not signed on, however, and in any event the pic would not go into production until next year.
Meanwhile, the fourth instalment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" remains a priority for Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. At an earlier point, it was going to be the next picture for Depp, who toplines as Jack Sparrow. But with Gore Verbinski no longer directing the franchise, the ship has slowed.
Disney is seeking a new director, a process that could take time. Although the studio is believed to want an established helmer of franchise and action fare, it has put the word out to agents that it would be open to younger directors and new ideas, potentially prolonging the process. That could mean as much as a four- or five-year hiatus since the 2007 release of the previous picture, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."
(Disney also would like to scale back the size and budget of the next movie compared with previous instalments; for that reason, it likely won't bring back relatively pricey Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.)
'RANGER' NOT YET RIDING
Because of the "Pirates" lag, a Depp project that was supposed to go into production after the Sparrow-fest, "The Lone Ranger," could end up getting pushed back further, though there's also a possibility it could shoot ahead of the nautical tale.
For the moment, though, "Ranger" also remains locked in the stable. "Pirates" writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have written a script for the Disney/Bruckheimer update, but the studio could wind up commissioning a polish or another draft. There's also no director, and Depp is attached to play Tonto, with the title role still to be cast.
Finally, Warners' feature update of the ghoulish TV series "Dark Shadows" -- a Depp/Tim Burton collaboration that might have shot later this year or early next year -- also might be back-burnered. Burton still has work to do on "Alice," which opens in March, and tends to spend a lot of time on prep work.
What the possibilities boil down to, besides head spinning, is that there are projects with momentum that Depp has not signed for, and projects he has signed for that don't have a lot of momentum.
In other words, it's a very 2009 phenomenon brought on by a star's choosiness on the one hand and studios' increasing caution on the other. (In what might be an emerging mini-trend, Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio happen to find themselves in similar situations.)
The result is that Depp could face a year or longer without appearing on the big screen.
That might not sound like a major departure, but for moviegoers, it will seem like a shift. Depp has been in one of the most fertile periods of his career: The actor also stars in the Hunter S. Thompson adaptation "The Rum Diary" and had a supporting role in Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," which hasn't yet been released in the U.S. In the past nine years, Depp has not had more than two movies come out in any 18-month period; if "Imaginarium" gets a release by the end of 2010, he'll have had four.
Then again, the absence of a new role might mean a respite from his breakneck schedule. Even a pirate needs some time off.

June 23, 2009 - Johnny Depp has been extremely busy recently with Public Enemies hitting theaters on July 1st and production just wrapping up on his latest collaborative effort with filmmaker Tim Burton - Alice in Wonderland. He also just completed work on The Rum Diary directed by Bruce Robinson and based on the novel by Hunter S Thompson. And of course there's another Pirates of the Caribbean movie looming on the horizon, as well as The Lone Ranger (he'll be playing Tonto). The super busy actor attended the LA press day for Universal Pictures' Public Enemies and answered a few questions about his upcoming projects, including playing The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland and climbing back into character as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean #4.
On playing The Mad Hatter:
"Well, the Hatter was awfully fun, you know? The Hatter was like... After doing something like John Dillinger, a performance where it's so restrained because of the responsibility you have to that guy, the Mad Hatter was like being fired out of a cannon. The Hatter was great fun and, again, it's one of those things where you're just amazed that that I'm not fired. I truly am."On the status of The Lone Ranger:
"We're still in the super-beginning stages, so there's all kind of possibilities. But I feel like I have some good ideas for the characters that are interesting, that I don't think have been done before."Returning for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie:
"I mean, call me a glutton. If we can get the screenplay right to Pirates 4 because, obviously, virtually no cinema's perfect. So Pirates 1 had its own thing, 2 and 3, I suppose, had their own thing and it got a little confusing here and there in the story. Not that I've seen the movies, but I hear tell. I think, for me, because I love the character so much and I enjoy playing the character so much and people seem to like it, if there's an opportunity to try again, you know, it's like going up to bat. You want to get back out there and try and try and try and see what you can do. I enjoy playing Captain Jack very much."On where he could take Captain Jack Sparrow:
"Well, at this point, what I'm trying to do is change it into a Beckett play. [Laughing] I don't know. It could be anything now at this point. Jack Sparrow could be in some geisha clothing. I don't know. We could explore other possibilities."Terry Gilliam's considering trying again to shoot The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Has he talked to Gilliam and is he interested?
"Yeah. We've talked about it. The thing honestly with Terry... I mean, I love Terry and I'd do, personally, anything the guy wants to do. The thing is with Quixote, first, you know, my dance card is pretty nutty for the next couple of years so I'd hate to have to put him in a position or ask him to be in a position to wait for me. That would be wrong. But, also, I don't know, in a way. I feel like we went there and we tried something and whatever it was, the elements and all the things that got up underneath us were there and happened and were documented well, and were documented well in the film Lost in La Mancha. So I don't know if it's, I hope it's right for me to go back there. I don't know if it's right for Terry to, but if he wants to."

Captain Jack Sparrow Comes To Life For Some Special Kids

This is the kind of thing that makes Johnny Depp not only an exceptional actor but also a super awesome dude!
While in the UK promoting his newest flick, Public Enemies, Johnny gave a few very sick kids the thrill of a lifetime. He went to visit them at the Great Ormond Street Hospital dressed as his Pirates Of The Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow!!!
Amazeballs!
Johnny visited several wards, including the one his daughter was admitted to when she was treated for kidney failure in 2007, and graciously posed for pictures with all his young fans.
A source recalls: "Johnny was so friendly with all the children in the ward and they absolutely loved his pirate outfit. He spoke to lots of the youngsters and staff - and made their day by posing for pictures with them all."
He's done this kind of thing before. And for him to do it again, that just makes Depp first-rate class act in our book.

Johnny Depp projects
That image up there is a scan of card that “Public Enemies” star Johnny Depp held in his hands. MTV’s Josh Horowitz handed it to him, because the actor has so many projects flying through the rumorwaves that it’s hard to keep track.
Depp’s big reveals were that he’ll be occupied next year with both the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie and the long-talked-about adaptation of the UK vampire TV series “Dark Shadows.” That’s not all though. Slipped into the seemingly offhand comment is Depp’s confirmation that rumored director Tim Burton is indeed involved with the project. Fantastic news. As you saw yesterday, Burton and Depp make magic together. Check out a video of Josh’s time with Depp after the jump or head over to MTV.com to see the full interview in MTV Rough Cut: ‘Public Enemies’.
