Hi everyone, Terry Rossio here, co-writer of the Pirates trilogy, and hopefully one of the co-writers for the possible Pirates of the Caribbean 4.I just read through this thread and wow, I can't tell you how amazingly cool it is that there is so much interest among fans for the Pirates series. I love the intense examination of every detail, that's why we put them there (and without the fans, honestly, we'd have never been allowed to get away with making the films so complex). It's a major thrill to see posts with excerpts at the bottom of lines we wrote ...
All right, as for a Pirates 4, I feel compelled to write, and I don't want to bum anyone out, as of now, nothing has been decided. No dates have been set, no actors committed, no topics set, etc. I can't confirm or deny any rumors except to say they didn't start with us.
The process is still this: a screenplay needs to be written, the studio needs to be convinced to make it, a director (Gore) has to want to direct it and actors have to choose to play the parts. As I've said before, I believe we will try to solve the problem of a fourth movie. It's impossible to say, ahead of time, whether we'll be successful.
Sorry for the completely non-informative post, but that's the status. (Now, hopefully I won't get in trouble from Disney for saying nothing ...)
Thanks everyone for your continued faith and support!

‘Pirates’ Director Admits ‘At World’s End’ Problems, Won’t Set Sail Again Without Script
February 8, 2008 at 11:06 am.![]()
Gore VerbinskiBetween Captain Jack, Barbossa, Will, Elizabeth, Davy Jones, Calypso, Norrington and a veritable rogues gallery of pirates, buccaneers and scoundrels, trying to follow every plot thread in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” left my head spinning like a giant maelstrom.Turns out “Pirates” helmer Gore Verbinski agrees. Holding court as the keynote speaker at the video game-centric DICE Summit in Las Vegas, the director told the audience that his biggest problem with “At World’s End” was that it had just too many darn characters.
It’s a problem they’ll almost certainly remedy next time around. Reports from websites like Jim Hill Media indicate that the next “Pirates” adventure will center almost exclusively on Jack and Barbossa, presumably as they search for the fabled Fountain of Youth.
Geoffrey Rush more or less confirmed this to MTV News himself back in September, when the Oscar winner proposed a search for the fabled spring as his preferred storyline for a fourth big screen journey.
But if true, it’s certainly news to Verbinski.
“Show me the script,” he said. “I look forward to reading the script for ‘Pirates 4.’”
Verbinski knows, of course, that because of the ongoing writers strike, such a task would be impossible. But, then, past “Pirates” movies have already been green-lit, and even given a concrete release date, without a final screenplay.
Try it again and you’ll lose Verbinski, the director insisted.
“The process of having release dates and no script is not something I’m dying to go through again. I would have to pull the gun out of my mouth [first],” he said. “The reason I did 2 and 3, honestly, was because I still thought there was something to do there. I don’t want to be involved in, you know, ‘Rocky 9.’
From G4'Pirates 4' Plot Rumors Ahoy!
Posted by mdalonzo - Wednesday, February 06, 2008 1:16 PMYes, Virginia, there will likely be a Pirates of the Caribbean 4, regardless of what you thought of the last couple of Pirates movies. Why? Because they made about a googol of dollars, that's why. Still, you might ask, what would happen in such a film? Good question, and now, here's a rumor about the answer. Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner would be jettisoned, and the film would be a "bawdy buddy movie" featuring Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush's characters.
Note we didn't say it would necessarily feature Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush. Nope. We're thinking that, in the end, such a movie would be such an unpopular move that both men would decline involvement, and it would end up being a typical Disney straight-to-video release that kids would absolutely love and parents would kill if they had to watch more than once. And it would be called Pirates of the Caribbean 3 1/2 or some such.

Will ‘Pirates 4’ Find The Fountain Of Youth?
Published by Shawn Adler on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 5:45 pm.Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner in 'Pirates'Considering that the franchise comprises two of the top five highest-grossing movies of all-time, series co-star Geoffrey Rush thinks making another “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie would be a “a pre-ordained license to print money,” he joked.
Luckily enough for producers, then, the Oscar winner says he’s even got a story.
“[Finding the Fountain of Youth] would be a fun thing to do,” Rush declared, referencing the coda to “At World’s End,” where Jack Sparrow is seen with a map to the fabled spring. “[I could] drink the elixir and suddenly turn into Orlando Bloom. It’ll be a comedy!”
“And then I get the girl and the elixir wears off,” he continued, a large smile on his face. “There’s a story. Shoot that!”
But despite a willingness to get back on board (literally) as the devious Captain Barbossa, Rush nevertheless thinks a fourth “Pirates” is a long way off.
“I know there’s some website that says it’s confirmed, but no one’s phoned me yet officially. I think they’ll leave it for a while,” he said. “Jack Sparrow’s become such a popular character – he’s almost more popular at Disney now than Mickey Mouse for a certain generation. But I don’t think any of the creative team, would be interested if the ideas were dull or the script was mercenary or purely commercially driven.”
Who would you want to return for a fourth “Pirates” film? And where would you like to see the crew go?

Plot rumors galore!
by StaxJune 20, 2007 - With Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End doing good business at the box office, it's no surprise to hear rumors about a potential Pirates 4. Series producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said the series could continue if the filmmakers can come up with a good story. Now there are rumblings online about what some of the plot ideas being kicked around are.
According to a scooper for CinemaBlend.com, Johnny Depp is all but set to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow (for a $35-40 million payday, they claim). Also reportedly expected to return are co-star Geoffrey Rush and director Gore Verbinski, although the latter has made it clear to some that he's done with swashbuckling. Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not expected to be back, but that's been assumed for sometime. The site adds that production might not begin until sometime between 2009-2011.
CinemaBlend's scooper claims "the fountain of youth story [introduced at the end of Pirates 3] might not be the only story they might use the next pirate's film. The fountain story could be used in another form to introduce the story for Pirates 4."
They add that, "Some of the brainstorming going around involves some Jules Verne type of scenarios involving some pretty big flying machines, a man who wants to rule more than just the ocean, an encounter with the most famous and dangerous pirate of all, a race to get to a lost world (Hint, Hint) and Jack and his crew going to where no pirate has gone before (No, it's not space but Disney had made animated movie about this place before with Michel J Fox voicing one of the characters)."
Jack Sparrow discovers Atlantis?! Time will tell.
From Coming SoonExclusive: Geoffrey Rush on Possible Pirates 4
Source: Edward Douglas
September 16, 2007
Next month, Geoffrey Rush will be reprising the role of Sir Francis Walsingham in Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth: The Golden Age, the director's follow-up to the 1997 period drama which introduced much of the world to one Cate Blanchett. ComingSoon.net was given a rare opportunity to talk to the celebrated Oscar-winning actor who's no stranger to sequels and franchises, which spurred us to ask Rush for his thoughts on the possibilities of him and Johnny Depp returning for a fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. Even though some were disappointed with Pirates of Caribbean: At World's End, it has grossed $960 million worldwide, more than any other movie this year, so making a fourth movie must be something on a lot of minds.
"I think people will let it sit for a while," he told us. "There's a strange attitude about franchise movies. People look at them as that rather than storytelling. Back in the old days, how many Thin Man movies did William Powell end up doing? Probably five or six. How many road movies did Bob and Bing end up doing over 25-year period? There could be a point… because Jack Sparrow is probably now to a certain generation more well known as a representative of the Disney imagination than Mickey Mouse himself and Johnny's performance in that role is such an extraordinary thing… that it may pop up."
Mr. Rush also talked to us about how he thinks his character should make a return for the third movie in Kapur's "Elizabeth" trilogy, but for that, you'll have to wait for our full interview with the actor, sometime between now and the release of Elizabeth: The Golden Age on October 12. Also look for an interview with Rush's lovely Aussie co-star, Abbie Cornish, very soon.

(and carpediem)"The North American producer, Walt Disney Pictures, is negotiating with the City Council of Lepe so that next autumn the natural place Arrow of New Shade can be used for filming the new Pirates of the Caribbean, according to an official notice.
The Arrow of New Shade, 18 kilometers from the coast, is considered by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films a suitable place for the filming of a good part of the images for the new pirate adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow and his companions Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.
In addition to the beach of New Shade, that has intact dunes and the typical Mediterranean vegetation of these places, the producer has considered of great importance that less than ten kilometers away is ample hotel infrastructure.
The City Council of Lepe values Walt Disney Pictures' interest in the beaches of Lepe for this new production, for the economic benefit and the arrival of equipment for something more than 300 people, as well as the tourist promotional value that it will have for the municipality and the fact that the location would appear in the credits of the film.
The agreement between the City Council of Lepe and Walt Disney Pictures with Jerry Bruckheimer Films, that is predicted to be signed next March, will not include an economic contribution from the producer to the City of Lepe but the filming will provide publicity and hiring of the extras that are necessary.
Also, it is predicted that Gore Verbinski will direct again. A small scene is included that will be filmed in the old house of the captain of ______ of New Shade, in which three historical pirates of the Iberian Peninsula - Bartolomeo, the Portuguese; Alí Romero, the Berberisco; and the Spaniard, Abraham Samuel, offer a glass of Spanish wine to Captain Sparrow upon his arrival to the Spanish coast."

From Rotten TomatoesBloom Out For "Pirates 4?"
by RT Staff | October 09, 2006Is Will Turner, Orlando Bloom's character in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, marked for death? According to WENN (via Cinescape), the script for the fourth "Pirates" movie is in the works, and it may sanction the demise of Jack Sparrow's young sidekick.
A Disney insider told the British tabloid The Daily Star Sunday, "The script for the fourth "Pirates" movie is being worked on and all the finances are in place but it was decided Bloom's character and a number of minor roles were not necessary to ensure it would be yet another box office smash for Disney."
"Prates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which stars Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly, and Bloom, has grossed $421M.
