SPOILER BIG TIME
Today's Hollywood Reporter in an article about Comic-Con:

Attendees packed the house to watch new behind-the-scenes material for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," introduced on tape by producer Jerry Bruckheimer.  "It's not about treasure," he said.  "It's about Jack Sparrow's death with Davey Jones."  A second sequel, "Pirates 3," starts filming in the fall, he said.

A friend of mine saw it and this is what she could remember:

There were clips with bits of Jerry Bruckheimer speaking, artist concepts, and still shots.  Jerry said everyone would be back and they showed the Govenor, Elizabeth, Will and Jack.  I asked if she saw Norrington, but she did not remember.  She said they showed the Kraken which is like a big squid or octopuss.  She said Jerry said there would be two ships this time the Black Pearl and the Flying Dutchman.

She siad they showed Jack captured by cannibals, and they showed him sitting "just like Jack" on a throne with a leg thrown over the arm.  She said the funniest clip was of Jack supposedly (in pure Jack style) crossing an open field and trying to be sneaky - stopping and looking over his shoulder, and that made everyone laugh.

She said the monsters this time are not just like skeletal pirates, they look more like barnacle-encrusted sailors who are very white with like seaweed and 'stuff' and she thinks Bootstrap Bill may be one of them since something was deformed about one side of his face.  I suggested these 'monsters' were the dead sailors who serve Davy Jones and she said that made sense.  She said they were very whiteish looking.  Jerry also comented on "Jack's chest," or "the chest" which was shown as a big closed chest.

She said there was a clip of Will either at the wheel or beside the wheel of a ship.  There was a glimpse of a ship in a misty dark lagoon. A clip of a man on horseback riding in a longboat (on the horse).

If you or anyone you know has a better memory of this (and saw it at Comicon 2005) please email Kazren (see below).  I did a web search and the guys at AICN also saw the 'trailer' and so did Coming Soon.net which got this artcile and picture of Davy Jones:

Walt Disney Pictures has given a first look at a picture of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest villain Davey Jones at the San Diego Comic-Con. The studio handed out the following poster, which shows the character played by Bill Nighy in the first of two upcoming sequels.

In the follow-up, due out July 7, 2006, Captain Jack (Johnny Depp) owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, ruler of the ocean depths and captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. If Jack can't figure a crafty way out of this one, he'll be cursed to an afterlife of eternal servitude and damnation.

Bill Nighy previously stated that Jones is the villain and that the character will be created using special effects. "I am a very, very, very, very bad man and I am there to make people suffer in all new ways, in ways that you won't have seen before," he said. "I have a boat and I have a crew, and they are really evil buggers. I'm so computer generated that you might have trouble spotting me. You'll know it's me, but you might have to check the credits afterwards," he laughed.

Richards now aboard Pirates sequel

It has been confirmed that Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards will make a cameo appearance in one of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' sequels.

NME.com reports that actor Bill Nighy told Contactmusic.com: "I can confirm Keith Richards will appear in 'Pirates of the Caribbean 2 or 3'. I'm not sure which one, because they are being filmed back-to-back."

Richards is expected to play the father of Johnny Depp's character, Captain Jack Sparrow, in the film.

Depp has stated in the past that his character in the first film was largely based on Richards' real life persona.

Johnny Depp and Keith Richards Johnny Depp's pulled off a big coup.

He's managed to persuade Rolling Stone Keith Richards to star as Captain Jack Sparrow's father in one of the two upcoming 'Pirates of the Caribbean' sequels.

Johnny, who plays Captain Jack, has been trying to persuade the aging rocker to make a cameo for months because his pirate character was based on the guitarist. Johnny says it's a dream come true:

"I've talked to Keith about it, he's been super sweet and keen to do it."

"I'm just hoping we can work out the dates with The Stones tour."

"You talk about a dream come true, you get to be a pirate with Keith Richards, does it get any better than that?"

Island eyed for Pirates of the Caribbean sequels

Hoot isn't the only movie coming to Boca Grande. The big-budget Disney epics Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest and the as-yet unnamed Pirates of the Caribbean 3 are also strongly considering the island as a production site.

The films could bring as many as 500 actors, technicians and crew to the island.

Alejo Menendez, a freelance location scout from Miami hired by Disney to work on the production was inspecting locations on Monday from a helicopter. At the controls was ace stunt pilot Al Guthery, with Miami-based International Helicopter Service, who has flown stunts for more than 60 films.

The two sequels to the 2003 hit Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl will star Johnny Depp as swashbuckler Will Sparrow, Orlando Bloom as sidekick Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Will's love interest Elizabeth Swann. The movies are currently filming back-to-back, as was done with the 80's hits Back to the Future, Parts 2 and 3. They will be released in 2006 and 2007.

"Absolutely perhaps" is how a source close to the production described the possibility that Gasparilla Island, specifically the old phosphate dock, would figure prominently in the movie.

"They want an alternate location to do 'tank work' for the movie, a controlled environment where they can film scenes with a pirate ship being out on the ocean," the well-connected source said. "They're looking at the former phosphate dock because it's got deep water and a clean horizon. That's a difficult combination to find in Florida. But everything is perfect for the film company to come in and work in that environment."

The production company had considered using locations in the Caribbean, but needed a place on the U.S. mainland as an alternative due to "unforeseen factors," the source said.

Florida Power and Light, which owns the property adjacent to the phosphate dock, has not publicly said it will allow the land to be used for the production.

Internet film sites are rife with rumors about the productions. Most versions of the storyline for Dead Man's Chest have Sparrow trying to get out of a blood debt he owes to Davey Jones (Bill Nighy), captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. If he can't repay the debt, Sparrow will have to endure an afterlife of eternal enslavement and damnation.

Details of Pirates 3 were not available. The films were written by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio and are being directed by Gore Verbinski, who helmed the original Pirates movie.

Guthrie landed his twin-jet, French-built Aerospatial helicopter at the soccer field on 7th Street to pick up Menendez after his scouting tour.

"The best job I ever had?" Guthrie said in response to a question. "Well, there have been so many of them, but the one I liked the best was filming Club Paradise with Robin Williams and Peter O'Toole in Grenada and Jamaica. Those two guys really cracked me up."

 Chow Shanghaid For Pirates 3

Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have enlisted Chow Yun-fat for Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Variety reported. Chow will play Capt. Sao Feng, a notorious pirate who plays a major role in the second sequel to 2003's Disney blockbuster, the trade paper reported.

It is the Hong Kong native's first English-language role since 2003's Bulletproof Monk.

Pirates 2 and 3 are shooting back to back, with production scheduled through January. The shoot is currently in a scheduled hiatus so helmer Gore Verbinski can ready portions of Pirates 2, formally titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, for post-production, with an eye toward a July 2006 release. Pirates 3 is slated for summer 2007.

Shooting stopped June 10 and will resume in mid-August in Los Angeles, shifting back to Caribbean locations later in the year. Some Pirates 2 footage remains to be shot, but most of the remaining shooting days will be devoted to Pirates 3, the trade paper reported.

Wrangling Pirates for Keith Richards

Posted Jul 6, 2005, 9:44 PM ET by Karina Longworth

A lot of Johnny Depp fans marvelled over the fact that it essentially took a Keith Richards impersonation to get their man an Oscar nomination. In a case of art (if you can even talk about a franchise based on a theme park ride under the rubric of the A-word) imitating criticism, the aforementioned Rolling Stone was then cast as Depp's father in the two Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. When it looked like he was going to have to drop out of the film in order to rock star committments, Depp not only begged Richards to stick to the project, he also conviced director Gore Verbinski to arrange a special shoot in February to catch Richards in between tour dates. "It looks like it's going to happen," Depp said at a press conference on the sequels' Bahamas set. "But I don't know when. It's all going to depend on where we are and where he is, because he's got a little thing called the Rolling Stones tour to do."

Depp Talks Pirates 2
Captain Jack is back.
June 28, 2005 - If you've seen Johnny Depp in any recent interviews, you can tell he's back in character as Captain Jack Sparrow.  The Pirates of the Caribbean sequel is now shooting, with occasional footage being filmed for a third film in the high seas adventure franchise. Depp recently shed some light on the production during a talk with Blackfilm.com.

So, are the two sequels actually being shot back to back or what? Depp says, "As much as we can, we are doing two, and every now and then, you may have to slot something in from Pirates 3, but the majority of what we have done so far have been 2 and then we will start moving into 3 after the hiatus. It's been great fun so far."

Depp says he chose to reprise the role just to get back in Captain Jack's skin. "For me," he says, "there was only reason ... it was Captain Jack. It was selfishly to have the opportunity to play Captain Jack again. Some people can look at it and say, 'Depp sold out.' I don't believe that I have. It certainly wasn't my attention to sell out but I wanted to play again because I think he's so much fun to play and I think there is so much more to explore with that character that I would keep going. If they wanted me to do 'Pirate 7,' why not." Depp sold out? Don't think so.

While speaking about "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" in the Bahamas, Johnny Depp talked about working on "Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3".

How is it shooting two films at the same time?
Johnny Depp: Well, it's a lengthy process. It's going to take us a while.

Over 9 months?
JD: Maybe more.

Are you shooting the films back to back?
JD: As much as we can, we are doing two, and every now and then, you may have to slot something in from "Pirates 3", but the majority of what we have done so far have been 2 and then we will start moving into 3 after the hiatus. It's been great fun so far

Why did you choose to revisit the role of Captain Jack?
JD: For me, there was only reason and one reason only, it was Captain Jack. It was selfishly to have the opportunity to play Captain Jack again. Some people can look at it and say, "Depp sold out." I don't believe that I have. It certainly wasn't my attention to sell out but I wanted to play again because I think he's so much fun to play and I think there is so much more to explore with that character that I would keep going. If they wanted me to do "Pirate 7", why not?

What will we see this time around?
JD: In "Pirates 2 & 3", you will get to see a couple of new layers to Captain Jack. You will get to see him in new situations; situations that he is unable to talk his way out of. There's a lot of fun stuff.

Will Keith Richards be in the film?
JD: It's looking very good. I've talk to Keith about it and he's been super sweet and keen to do it and it's looking very good. We are just hoping that we can work out the dates with the Stones tour and everything but if that happens, you talk about a dream come true. Get to be a pirate with Keith Richards? Does it get better than that?

Richards Coming To Pirates

Johnny Depp, who reprises the character of Captain Jack Sparrow in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, told SCI FI Wire that he and director Gore Verbinski are still trying to schedule scenes with Rolling Stones rock star Keith Richards, who will play Sparrow's father, but that it looks promising. "It looks like it's going to happen," Depp told reporters at a news conference in Nassau, Bahamas, where the films are shooting. "But I don't know when. It's all going to depend on where we are and where he is, because he's got a little thing called the Rolling Stones tour to do."

Depp also confirmed that the first sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, took an early hiatus because a key cast member fell ill. "We've been shooting Pirates 2 for, well, it's been a few months ... now," Depp said on June 26. "And we had a hiatus that was planned; actually, probably it was supposed to start ... tomorrow or the next day. And we went into the hiatus a bit early, because there were bits that we were going to shoot up in Grand Bahama [for which] sets and stuff weren't ready. But more than that, one of ... our actors, one of our main guys, Kevin McNally, who plays Gibbs, ended up with a really nasty ear infection in both ears, and he was England and ... was unable to get on a plane. So they just weighed out all the options and said, 'We'll just break now. Go on hiatus. And when we start up again, we'll finish up the bit from 2.'"

Verbinski will shoot the first and second sequels back-to-back. Dead Man's Chest reunites the cast from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, including Depp, Orlando Bloom (Will Turner) and Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Swann), and adds Bill Nighy as the ghostly Davey Jones.

Depp met with reporters to promote his upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it was clear he had transitioned into full pirate mode: He sported a scraggly beard, gold-capped teeth and a tattoo with the name "Jack" and the image of a sparrow against a sunrise on his right forearm. But Depp said it was a pleasure returning to the franchise. "It's weird," he said. "We didn't quite know what to expect before we went back into ... Pirates 2. A lot of things happened. ... Orlando's, you know, [in] these big movies. And Keira, you know, all this stuff. And everybody's all over the map. And so we didn't quite know what to expect. And Gore, obviously, Gore's been working like a demon. But honestly, we stepped on the set the first day, and it was like, for me, jumping back into the skin of Captain Jack, ... it felt like we'd had a week off, you know, from the first one. And it's been a really great time, you know? Everybody's been super good and fun, and I think it's going to be good. I hope. I'll knock wood again."
