Wicked Whispers
After Johnny Depp famously based his portrayal of Jack Sparrow in Pirates
Of The Caribbean on Keith Richards, there was talk of the Rolling Stone
making a cameo appearance in the sequel, playing the pirate's father. But
the wrinkly rocker's son Marlon told me at last week's Ivor Novello Awards:
'He'd love to do it, but it looks as if the window of opportunity has passed.
He's just too busy working with the Stones.'

We had a chance to take an up-close look at Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, the upcoming pirate-themed action game from publisher Bethesda Softworks and developer 7 Studios (the latter is currently working on the Fantastic Four game for Activision). Unlike the previous pirate-themed game released by Bethesda (which was a strategy game similar to Sid Meier's Pirates!), The Legend of Jack Sparrow will be a full-on third-person brawling game in which you'll play as the titular pirate Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp in the motion picture) or as Will Turner (played by Orlando Bloom in the motion picture).
The majority of the game will focus on fighting sword battles against groups of scurvy swabs. The level we saw took place in the cobbled streets of a New World colony in the evening, lit by flickering torches. We watched Sparrow fight through small hordes of enemy swordsman using button combinations to perform a series of flashy sword strikes. The game's environments will also be full of objects that can be manipulated, such as a hanging scaffold (on which enemies are hiding) that can have its support rope cut to send the enemies crashing to the ground.
Apparently, you'll be able to improve on the sword maneuvers you know, as well as learn new ones, over the course of the game. Even though both swashbucklers are agile and can dodge out of the way of incoming sword attacks, there will apparently be absolutely no platform-style gameplay elements (so no jumping over pits, or crawling up ledges) in the game. There will, however, be in-mission puzzles to solve, as well as humorous cutscenes, such as one scene in which Sparrow and Turner fight their way through a group of enemies to reach the town's gate and see a pig. Sparrow asks Turner, half in jest, if he knows what sort of animal the pig is, and doesn't understand why Turner keeps replying, "duck!" until he looks past the gate and sees a cannon aimed straight at him.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow should offer plenty of hack-and-slash action to go with its cooperative multiplayer mode, which lets two players take control of Jack Sparrow and Will Turner simultaneously. The game is scheduled for release later this year on the PC, the Xbox, and the PS2.

E3 2005: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow
It's not just a ride at Disneyland.
by Tom McNamara
May 19, 2005 - At one time, basing a movie on an amusement park ride probably sounded a little silly. And it still does--but you can't deny the fact that Pirates of the Caribbean was a darnedgood movie. The game that was once known as Sea Dogs II got shoehorned into the movie license, with mixed results, but this time Bethesda is coming back guns blazing with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, which is based on Jack's exploits mentioned and partially demonstrated in Curse of the Black Pearl.
With the strength of a quality movie and a magnetic actor behind the license, things are a lot more promising this time around. You'll have a dozen different locations, in which you'll find burning buildings, shipwrecks, and caves, as you career around the islands in adventurous style. Jack will gradually unlock new weapons and moves as the game progresses, find secret items, and show us if he really did sack Nassau port without firing a single shot. It sounds like there will also be some stealth elements and traps that Jack will have to work his way around, and co-op multiplayer. We'll find out for sure when the game comes out for Xbox, PS2 and PC in Q3 2006.

Captain Jack Sparrow goes platforming in this swashbuckling beat-'em-up.
Spiffy
Makes good use of the license; lots of fighting moves to learn and
unlock; cool animations.
Iffy
Way too early to tell just how deep the gameplay is going to be; Johnny
Depp isn't on board yet
One important point about The Legend of Jack Sparrow should be made clear right off the bat: this is not in any way, shape, or form a sequel to Sea Dogs or last year's Pirates of the Caribbean. This is not a pirate/seafaring sim; this is an action-platform adventure game with sword-fighting combos, puzzles, and secret levels.
The game tells the story of how Captain Jack Sparrow became the infamous pirate that you saw in the hit movie. You'll get stranded on that desert island with the rum and the turtles; you'll have to sack Nassau Port, and so on. You'll do this by using swordplay, solving puzzles, and using the environment to complete levels. Several characters from the film are in the game from Sparrow to Will Turner. Bethesda is still working on getting the voice talent together, but hopefully Johnny Depp comes on board because it just won't sound right having another actor do the voice work for Captain Jack.
The combat is fast and furious. You will learn new combo moves as well
as find new swords, which allow you to perform new tricks throughout the
course of the game. You'll also be able to use the environment to your
advantage. You can pull ropes to trigger traps, lure unsuspecting foes
into pits, pick up and hurl explosives, etc. Bethesda is stressing the
fact that while this is an action/platform game, it's not all about just
slashing enemies down with a blade. There are a lot of puzzles to solve,
as well.
The game will have anywhere from 12 to 15 goal-oriented levels with primary and secondary objectives. Bethesda is still working on constructing some of the levels, but there should be several unique environments from wrecked ships to royal ports. If you want to hack, slash, and jump through the game with a buddy rather than solo, you'll be able to play two-player co-op.
The game is still a long way from completion, as its currently set for
a mid to late 2006 release on Xbox, PS2, and PC, but the graphics and animation
already look very good, especially during some of the more intense sword-fighting
sequences. We'll have more on the game in the coming months as it nears
completion.
