"Pirates of The Caribbean" To Go Trilogy

by Nigel Yap

In a recent interview with Latino Review, producer extraordinaire, Jerry Bruckheimer talked briefly about his plans for the follow up of his hit "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. Bruckheimer says he's still hoping to make the sequels consecutively. "We'd like to. If Disney will write us a check, we'll do it," he says.

"We hope that we can do it as well as "Lord of the Rings" did. That's what you shoot for. You only learn through making mistakes, so we'll watch what "Back to the Future" did and "Matrix" did and hopefully not repeat what mistakes they did."

The characters from the first film, Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom, will return to reprise their roles and rumor has it that Keith Richards may be joining the cast as Jack Sparrow's father. However Bruckheimer cautions that Richards' involvement is not certain yet. Another lovely lady that may grace the movie is Salma Hayek, however like Richard, nothing is confirmed yet

Production on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels is set to begin early next year. Keep track of this space for further swashbuckling details.

Ahoy! Bruckheimer addresses 'Pirates' sequels
Source: Latino Review

Promotion for the upcoming National Treasure inevitably had Uber producer Jerry Bruckheimer answer questions about the much anticipated 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' part 2 & 3.

Talking to Latino Review, Bruck was somewhat shy on details. The one big rumour he couldn't avoid was the casting of rocker Keith Richards as Jack Sparrow's dad. "We don't have him yet," simply stated the man.

His one personal wish for the projects is still to film both at the same time, as was done for 'Lord Of The Rings' and 'The Matrix', saying "We'd like to. If Disney will write a check, we'll do it."
Of course, that gamble only paid off for 'Rings'. Previous attempts to pull it off, with 'Matrix' and 'Back To The Future' resulted in lesser profits. That doesn't mean he won't try, though.

"We hope that we can do it as well as Lord of the Rings did it. That's what you shoot for. You only learn through making mistakes, so we'll watch what Back to the Future did and Matrix did and hopefully not repeat what they did."
The producer confirmed that the subtitles for chapter 2 would in fact not be 'Treasure Of The Lost Abyss', as previously leaked on many web sites.

Production is set to kick off in March, at least for the first sequel. Stars Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom both have more than enough to keep occupied until then. Depp is signed on for five other projects including Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, while bloom has Kingdom of Heaven and Elizabethtown both in post-production.

Jerry Bruckheimer talked a little bit about the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels whilst doing press promotions for "National Treasure" and revealed to LatinoReview some surprising information that shoots down some facts many considered locked in.

Most notably of these is that Keith Richards is not in fact signed to play Jack Sparrow's father - "We don't have him yet". Bruckheimer confirms he has a subtitle for the second entry, but he wouldn't reveal it though he confirmed it is NOT "Treasures of the Lost Abyss" as previously mentioned.

The plan is still to make Pirates 2 and 3 simultaneously if possible - "We'd like to. If Disney will write a check, we'll do it...We hope that we can do it as well as Lord of the Rings did it. That's what you shoot for. You only learn through making mistakes, so we'll watch what Back to the Future did and Matrix did and hopefully not repeat what they did".

Production is expected to begin in March.

We've heard this rumor before, but now JoBlo has joined the fray about Salma Hayek joining the cast. He directs the curious to iesb.com - where they quote Orlando Bloom from last summer's interview:
'Pirates' is coming along well. Begins shooting after Christmas. Great cast - Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Salma Hayek and Keith Richards, who is playing Jack's father. It's on a much grander scale to the first - lawds of money.

 Johnny Depp chooses his "father"
by Mario Azzopardi
Saturday, 06 November, 2004

Johnny Depp's wish has come true - he has chosen the man who will play his father in the much awaited sequel, "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Treasures Of The Lost Abyss".

The man is Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones guitarist. Filming on the sequel is set to start in February. It is scheduled to be released in Summer 2006. The original, "Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl" was the third most successful film with local filmgoers during 2003.

Note from Kazren: Even though my sources say Keith Richards will not be in POTC, the press continues to give us stories:

Keith Richards Frees Inner Swashbuckler
Published: 2004-11-03
When it comes to the movie ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’, people just love to announce that lead actor Johnny Depp found his inspiration for character Captain Jack Sparrow by looking no further than rock legend Keith Richards. Just in case that piece of knowledge isn’t satisfying enough, it’s been confirmed that Disney has recruited Richards to appear in the sequels to the film in more than just spirit.

The Rolling Stones guitarist and sometimes vocalist has signed up to play Jack Sparrow’s father, er, Mr. Sparrow. Richards has reportedly already been for a costume fitting for the upcoming ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Treasures of the Lost Abyss’. Not only will the 60-year-old act in the second instalment of ‘Pirates’, but he’s also set to return for the third movie.

One of the last musicians to jump on the acting bandwagon, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Treasures of the Lost Abyss’ will be Keith Richard’s acting debut. Filming for the two movies, which is to occur simultaneously, is set to begin in February of next year. In addition to Richards and Depp, the cast of the ‘Pirates’ sequels will include Keira Knightly, Orlando Bloom, and Geoffrey Rush.

For those who somehow missed out on Depp’s now infamous quote (taken from a BBC interview), here it is: “I didn't want to do an imitation of Keith, or a character study, just a kind of salute to him, you know, to show him I appreciate him. I was thinking about the pirates of the 18th century, about how they were the rocks stars of their day. So I thought: Who's the greatest rock and roll star who ever lived? And to me, it's Keith Richards hands down. Keith is a bit of a pirate himself!”

Stone Rolls To Pirates 2?

In a bizarre casting rumor, Yahoo!'s U.K. site reported that Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has persuaded Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards to join the cast of the sequel films. Depp has previously said he based his quirky performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in part on Richards. Now, Richards has agreed to play Sparrow's father in both of the hit movie's forthcoming sequels, which will be shot simultaneously, the site reported.

Richards has reportedly already had a costume fitting in preparation for filming, which is due to start at the end of February and could continue for 11 months.

Johnny Depp has succeeded in his attempts to get Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards on board the sequel to Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Richards, the inspiration behind Depp's superb portrayal of the mercurial Captain Jack Sparrow, has agreed to play Sparrow's father in both of the hit movie's forthcoming sequels which will be shot simultaneously.

We understand that Richards has already had a costume fitting in preparation for filming which is due to start at the end of February and could continue for a whopping eleven months.

Richards will join all the stars who are returning for the two swashbuckling adventures including Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Crook and, spookily enough, Geoffrey Rush who will be back as the evil Captain Barbossa - despite dying at the end of the first film - as well as director Gore Verbinski.

From Box Office Prophet, Studio Systems, MQ & Cassady

The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl made $305 million at the North American box office. It added an additional $348 million overseas for a grand total of $653 million worldwide. Then, it went on to sell 11 million DVD/VHS units in its first week, making it the largest live-action flick in history for the medium. Is it any wonder that Disney moved quickly to greenlight not just one, but two sequels?

Yes, the second high-seas adventure of Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann will hit theaters in 2006, and according to spokesmen at Disney, will then be followed six months later by a third Pirates film. As the Wachowski brothers did with The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both films will be shot at the same time. So far, the rumor has the subtitle of the second film as Treasure of the Lost Abyss. The really great news, though, is that the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards has been confirmed for the role of Captain Jack Sparrow's father. If you're unaware why this is significant, Depp modeled the characteristics of Sparrow after those of the musician.

Along with Richards, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will all reprise the roles they originated. Additionally, director Gore Verbinski and screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott are back on hand as well. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

POTC2 has a projected release date of Nov. 2006 and POTC3 has a projected release date of May 2007! I thought they'd be a year sooner!

Keith Richard has DEFINITELY been signed!

October 4, 2004
Okay, my contact at Disney has come through with definate news: they will begin shooting mid Feb and go until the middle of Dec.2005.  This means we won't be seeing the new films until 2006, probably the summer, at the earliest.

At the Zone, Imengard reports that she was told at a trade show that filming on POTC 2&3 would not start until March 2005.  She was talking to prop people who had a booth there.  More news as it comes in.

From Kazren -
My people inside Disney say that the production offices have been set up for over a month, model makers are at work, and on the Disneland front, they're working getting a "Captain Jack Sparrow" for the park to take kids on treasure hunts around Tom Swayer Island - his base will be on the ship Columbia.

I'm afraid that details are still pretty sketchy on this one at the moment, although we can tell you that it will be made up of the standard two-disc set already on the market, along with a bonus disc containing eight new bonus features. The set will be available to own from the 2nd November this year, priced at around $29.99. We'll update this news article with further details shortly, but for now, here's the artwork:

DEPP DETERMINED TO ACT WITH VEGAS
Hollywood hunk JOHNNY DEPP is begging film executives to cast British comedian JOHNNY VEGAS in the next two PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN sequels.

The sexy actor, 41, met the controversial funnyman, 33, while filming new movie THE LIBERTINES and the unlikely friendship has become so intense, Depp is reluctant to make the film without Vegas.

Depp says, "We need more of a comic element in the next two movies and I think Johnny would be great. He could play the first mate. I'm sure he'd be up for it."

An insider explains, "They are from totally different backgrounds but they hit it off straight away. They could be hot stuff in Hollywood."

From Pascalle,
"Snippet in the paper today about JD. He is going to sing a ditty in POTC2 but hopes it won't sound like a captain birdseye song!"
