Capping a look

Who’d have thought wrinkles would rescue the millinery business? But that’s what’s happening. Just when you’d decided that hat-making was the last legal industry in the world you’d want your children to end up finding employment in, hats are staging a comeback. Not at formal events, ironically, where judging by the weddings I’ve attended lately, hats are about as fashionable as the farthingale among the younger generations.

But for everyday life, weirdly, they’re proliferating. This has been a stealth revival over several winters, partially spurred on by the annual five-minute snowflake fest, and partly by the fact that, in their different ways, Johnny Depp and P Diddy have both somehow managed to give fedoras attitude again.

But it was this past summer that hats started to look like proper accessories for stylish adults. Elle Macpherson in her straw Stetsons, Moss in her summerweight trilbies, Sienna Miller working her Panama with exceptionally pleasing results (hot tip: wear with micro bikini, toned body and preferably some up-and-coming model-turned-actor in the background) can all take credit. So too can Kylie in her baker boy caps. Keira Knightley in a bowler hat was more of a moot point, but at least it provided an outlet for someone’s brim-moulding skills.

What was lovely about this flurry-ette of summer headwear was that, the bowler aside, none of it looked particularly contrived. The successful sorties, like the best modern developments in fashion, had a chic look of the functional about them – probably because they were functional, now that A-listers are increasingly taking steps to protect their faces from the sun. This takes us to the crux of good hat-wearing: for where there is a clear, defined purpose to a hat, there is a hat that looks comfortable on its perch, and a wearer who seems at ease with themselves, rather than looking like a self-conscious pillock.

With luck, this jaunty turn of events will accelerate through winter. For the first time in years, many designers accessorised their catwalk collections with hats, from the full-brimmed, late Seventies-inspired hats at Marc Jacobs, the Forties-style fedoras at Roberto Cavalli and the furry peaked caps at Luella, to the glossy cloches at Proenza Schouler and berets at Ralph Lauren.

Carefully chosen, hats are highly flattering, framing the face, casting shadows that create angles and highlight cheekbones. But let’s not pretend they’re easy. Those of a nervous disposition will probably wish to start with a casual, unhattish sort of hat – the millinery equivalent of a T-shirt.

Enter the beanie, which being not so much a hat, more of a head sock, ought to be the easiest option. Actually, the beanie is quite tricky to get right if you don’t have a cascade of long, bouncy locks to offset the harsh head-suction effect. Berets can look fabulous on someone with a big enough head, ditto the tam-o’-shanter, which is really just a beret on steroids. Once you’ve got used to the feel of these, I’d strongly recommend a fedora – as ever Philip Treacy’s are the gold standard. Nothing creates the illusion of cheekbones with so little pain. Plus it keeps the rain off. You can’t say the same for implants.

Madame Tussauds wax figures arrive in D.C. from London
Brett Zongker
Associated Press
Sept. 17, 2007 12:00 AM
WASHINGTON - Madonna, Tom Cruise, Samuel L. Jackson and Angelina Jolie have arrived in the nation's capital, where they'll be among the stars of a big new attraction. One snag - they aren't wearing any clothes.

Dozens of naked bodies - all made of wax and fiberglass - lined the walls of a studio at the newest Madame Tussauds wax museum as workers prepare for its opening next month. Cruise was only recognizable by a label on his bare shoulder - his head was still in a box - but designers promised to give him a dashing wardrobe soon.

"We fast-tracked all these figures to have them ready for the opening," said Janine DiGioacchino, general manager for Madame Tussauds in New York and Washington. "Our studio team of 35 sculptors are working 24 hours around the clock to get them done."

The entertainment group's seventh wax museum - its third in the United States after New York and Las Vegas - is starting to take shape in the lower level of a historic downtown department store building. An opening gala is set for Oct. 4, and museum opens to the public Oct. 5.

A shipment of 51 figures arrived at the museum this week after months of research and meticulous design at Tussauds' London headquarters. Many figures, such as Thomas Jefferson and Johnny Depp, have full heads of human hair, inserted strand-by-strand into the wax sculpture.

"We had to bone up on our American history. We want the figures to be spot on," said Lisa Partridge, a hair color artist and 15-year veteran of Tussauds. "Jefferson had freckles. He was quite a red head. Not many people knew that."

The sculptures require touchups every day, after visitors feel the hair or get even more intimate.

"Sometimes we have to remove lipstick marks from some of the more popular figures," Partridge said. "The George Clooneys get a lot of attention from women who touch them and kiss them."

Six new figures were made especially for the new, $16 million museum: Jefferson, Harry Truman, Robert E. Lee, J. Edgar Hoover, Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward and former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry.

The four-term mayor, famous for being caught on videotape at a downtown hotel smoking crack cocaine in an FBI sting, did a sitting for museum artists over the summer. Contrary to early talk, Barry won't be placed in the museum's "scandal room" with the likes of Hoover and President Richard Nixon. Instead he'll join George Washington in one of the first rooms, known as the "Spirit of Washington."

"I'd not heard of (Barry) before, but he seems to love the limelight," said sculptor Dave Burks, who took nearly 200 measurements of Barry's head to design his figure. "He seemed to really enjoy it."

Like so many attractions in Washington, politics and history are at the museum's core. Abraham Lincoln greets visitors at the entrance - just a block from where he was fatally shot at Ford's Theater. From there, guests will pay the approximately $25 admission to see more.

Each figure has a caption with a quote from the subject, some fun facts and the essential thing to know about that person.

"It's not like we're a museum in the fact that we're worthy and there's loads of stuff to get through," said Creative Director Paul Williams. "It's more like we're entertaining people, and we're giving them the facts, the fun stuff they can take back and say, Hey did you know this?' "

Interactive features in each gallery quiz visitors along the way. The "scandal room" has some tough questions about Watergate on a replica of Woodward's desk, such as how many burglars robbed the Democratic National Committee headquarters. But while Woodward got the star treatment, his reporting partner Carl Bernstein will have to wait. Bernstein is on the short list for future additions to the museum, DiGioacchino said.

A "war room" showcases presidents during wartime, such as Truman, with his speech on dropping the atomic bomb; Dwight Eisenhower, in full military uniform; and Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, with a phone between them that carries snippets of their famous words.

But the museum isn't all serious.

One room has all the trappings of an exclusive nightclub. It's filled with celebrities, such as Julia Roberts, George Clooney and Will Smith. Beyonce Knowles is center stage with three of her music videos playing in the background.

Other galleries focus on the Civil Rights movement, with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the White House, and current affairs, with President George W. Bush, his father President George H.W. Bush and President Ronald Reagan.

Bill and Hillary Clinton also make a comeback, though in separate rooms. The former first lady is grouped with the current affairs figures, while the former president is holding down the Oval Office. There's also a mention of the Monica Lewinsky affair on file in the "scandal room" for anyone who doesn't know the details.

As visitors leave, Katie Couric interviews passers-by about their favorite moments and who they'd like to see in the galleries - feedback the museum intends to use for the future.

QB scores with GQ
By Carol Beggy and Mark Shanahan, Globe Staff  |  September 17, 2007

He was the best-dressed man in Esquire . . . the wet T-shirt model in VMAN . . . and now, Tom Brady gets the highest of honors from the editors of GQ. The clothes-horse quarterback graces one of 10 commemorative covers of the magazine's 50th anniversary edition, which hits newsstands on Wednesday. Brady is in pretty stylish company: Other covers feature Muhammad Ali, Johnny Depp, Robert Redford, Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Michael Jordan, Paul Newman, and Boston's own John F. Kennedy. (Brady is also featured in the magazine's spread of "50 Most Stylish Men of the Past 50 Years.") What helped Brady make the cut? Jim Moore, GQ's creative director, said it was the three Super Bowl rings, of course . . . plus Brady's charity work, his leadership on the field, and his self-mocking 2005 appearance on "Saturday Night Live." "We liked the fact that Tom Brady represents today," Moore said. "He's got a great spirit about him and he's an incredible leader. . . . We feel that his career is just getting going." Brady is also the only GQ cover boy who got new pictures taken for the occasion; for the other covers, GQ used iconic photos from each subject's era. Photographer Richard Burbridge, known for his stark and provocative portraits, shot Brady over the summer in New York. "I think that picture has a lot of integrity and soul," Moore said. And it's an image, he said, that's meant to raise questions about Brady's future. "He's been seen with politicians; could he be a politician someday? He's been seen with Hollywood stars; could he be in Hollywood someday?" One thing for sure: He's got a future in modeling if he wants it.

Exclusive: Geoffrey Rush on Possible Pirates 4
Source: Edward Douglas
September 15, 2007

Next month, Geoffrey Rush will be reprising the role of Sir Francis Walsingham in Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth: The Golden Age, the director's follow-up to the 1997 period drama which introduced much of the world to one Cate Blanchett. ComingSoon.net was given a rare opportunity to talk to the celebrated Oscar-winning actor who's no stranger to sequels and franchises, which spurred us to ask Rush for his thoughts on the possibilities of him and Johnny Depp returning for a fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. Even though some were disappointed with Pirates of Caribbean: At World's End, it has grossed $960 million worldwide, more than any other movie this year, so making a fourth movie must be something on a lot of minds.

"I think people will let it sit for a while," he told us. "There's a strange attitude about franchise movies. People look at them as that rather than storytelling. Back in the old days, how many Thin Man movies did William Powell end up doing? Probably five or six. How many road movies did Bob and Bing end up doing over 25-year period? There could be a point… because Jack Sparrow is probably now to a certain generation more well known as a representative of the Disney imagination than Mickey Mouse himself and Johnny's performance in that role is such an extraordinary thing… that it may pop up."

Mr. Rush also talked to us about how he thinks his character should make a return for the third movie in Kapur's "Elizabeth" trilogy, but for that, you'll have to wait for our full interview with the actor, sometime between now and the release of Elizabeth: The Golden Age on October 12. Also look for an interview with Rush's lovely Aussie co-star, Abbie Cornish, very soon.

Film guru creates Oscar buzz
David Poland's MovieCityNews.com has considerable clout in building a small movie into a big movie through buzz, especially important during the four-month run-up to the Academy Awards.

LOS ANGELES --
It's only summer but David Poland is already weighing in on who has got the best odds of capturing one of those coveted gold statuettes next February.

''I have 39 films on my list right now,'' Poland states on his Hollywood website MovieCityNews.com. ``At least a couple will not make release in 2007.

``The acting races are still pretty wide open, though nominations seem inevitable for Marion Cotillard, Julie Christie, Cate Blanchett, Javier Bardem [supporting, for No Country for Old Men], and the one guy who I still think will win, even from this far out . . . Johnny Depp: Aesthete Superstar.''

Trading in a Movie Star’s Ticket Sales
By ALEX MINDLIN
Published: September 10, 2007

Does casting a star raise a movie’s box-office take? The assumption is that it does, but it has been hard to test, partly because a star’s effect cannot be disentangled from that of co-stars, and partly because there is no alternative case to test the movie against: we don’t know how “Pirates of the Caribbean” would have done without Johnny Depp.

A paper soon to be published in The Journal of Marketing tries to solve that problem using the Hollywood Stock Exchange, a site that lets participants trade in “stocks” of movies. A dollar of stock value translates into $1 million in eventual box-office earnings. Over time, the stock prices have been fairly good predictors of the movies’ ultimate success.

Anita Elberse, the paper’s author and an assistant professor at Harvard Business School, examined the changes in price caused by a star’s quitting or being hired for a project from November 2001 to January 2005. For example, the news that Tom Hanks was in negotiations to star in “The Da Vinci Code” caused the movie’s stock to rise $43.43 above what might have been expected. Alfred Molina’s casting in “Spider-Man 2,” however, accounted for an $8.82 drop in price.
(Note from Kazren - you can buy stock in Johnny Depp and all of his upcoming films at the Hollywood Stock Exchange - all virtual so free - and the more who buy, the higher his stock will go up!)

M. C. : And today ,do you feel tracked?

VP: Yes, very much so. The paparazzi is always on your back – I don't respect them at all -, but there is also the looks of others. At the same time, one can't want to live a public job and say: "I don't want anyone to look at me when I do things." (Laughs.) And then it takes time to get used to. It also depends on your character. That doesn't make me extremely sociable. (Laughs.) But I don't want to live and discuss things with everyone anymore.

M. C. : Where is “home”?

VP: I have two houses: one in Los Angeles, and the other in the south of France. My children are French and American.

M. C. : Do you feel a little American?

VP: No, what horror! (Laughs.) I feel very French.

M. C. : You say that Johnny Depp, the man of your life, is also a friend. For many, this means that he's a guy you can be happy with.

VP: He doesn't stay like that! (Laughs.) But he didn't become a friend, our story started like that. And if it doesn't start like that from the beginning, there's a concern. When a friend is also your lover, they are someone you can laugh with, go away with, discuss things with and not that... I find this a lot more dangerous when there isn't passion, on the physical side. I don't believe that one can pass decades with someone without loving them like a friend.

M. C. : But today, relationships don't last long. And when this is the case, one suspects it of being planned.

VP: Me, I want to live. Other people have the need to go at 300km/h. I always ask myself: "What's going to happen to me when I'm 80?" It's the profound that will stay.

M. C. : Why have you never gotten married?

VP: I'm scared of messing everything up! I'm not against marriage, quite the opposite: to have the same last name, I find that beautiful. It would please my mother, too! (Laughs.) But I've seen so many couples marry - and then they split up fast. Maybe at the end of 25 years, I'll have less fear and I'll marry.

Johnny swaps pirate cool for a Hollywood dandy look

By hellomagazine.com  - Thursday, September 6 12:29 pm

Ditching his usual skull and crossbones gear for a film fest-worthy look Johnny Depp pulled out all the stops in Venice with a dapper appearance in a white tux and bow tie. The Pirates star had left behind the high seas to present his cult director friend Tim Burton with the Golden Lion statuette for lifetime achievement.

While, there remained one reflection of his boho tastes - an assortment of chunky rings visible on both hands - in every other respect the American actor resembled a Hollywood hotshot, right down to his snazzy cream shoes.

Johnny wasn't the only one to have been sartorially inspired by the big occasion. Tim and pregnant partner Helena Bonham-Carter were also turning in an elegant appearance. The iconic filmmaker was smart in a black suit, while Helena, who usually favours a 'homeless chic' approach, was very much the movie star in a silk off-the-shoulder creation.

It's no wonder the screen trio appeared so in synch. In recent years Tim has directed Johnny and 'the missus' Helena in no fewer than three movies, among them Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and this year's flick about Sweeney Todd.

Schnabel honored at Venice film fest

VENICE , Italy, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- U.S. visual artist Julian Schnabel has been honored at the Venice Film Festival for directing the film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly."

The painter, who also has directed the films "Before Night Falls" and "Basquiat," received the 2007 Gucci Group Award at a ceremony held Monday at the Palazzo Grassi.

The group said it bestows its awards to internationally-acclaimed artists who make remarkable contributions to a film.

"Painting can be compared to life, but is about optimism and faith. Artistic expression is the embodiment of hope," Schnabel said upon receiving the award.

"Julian Schnabel's 'Le Scaphandre et le Papillion,' ('The Diving Bell and the Butterfly') perfectly encapsulates the essence of the Gucci Group Award, which recognizes and honors visionaries who bring art to life on screen," said Robert Polet, chief executive officer and chairman of Gucci Group.

Hunter's friends tell Gonzo stories, most of them pretty crazy
By Bill Husted
Denver Post Staff Columnist
Article Last Updated: 09/01/2007 10:05:24 PM MDT

"Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson" comes out on Halloween, fittingly, because from all accounts it's pretty scary.

The book is an "oral biography" by Jann Wenner and Corey Seymour - which means they sit around and talk to different people about Thompson. And it isn't all whiskey, LSD and laughs.

Johnny Depp, who portrayed Thompson in the 1998 movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and paid for Thompson's elaborate funeral, wrote the loving introduction.

He met Thompson late one night at the Woody Creek Tavern. Thompson entered with a cattle prod and a Taser as he threatened to shock the $%#@* out of anyone who got in his path. He found Depp in the corner, they shook hands. "The beginning," Depp writes, "of a long and deep-rooted friendship."

Jack Nicholson remembers a night in Aspen with Hunter. "The first time I met him, he pulled out a gun in the middle of a house. Me and a friend of mine jumped out the window."

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis says he misses the late-night calls Thompson was famous for. "From now on when the phone rings at 4 a.m., it's just bad news."

Ain't that the truth.
