Johnny Depp's Falmouth freedom refusedThursday, 28th September 2006, 12:20
LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Johnny Depp has requested the freedom of British seaside town Falmouth - and been refused.Representatives for the 'Pirates of the CaribbeanView the profile for Johnny Depp on Celebrity Spotlight' star - who plays Captain Jack Sparrow in the Disney films - approached the council of the small Cornish town and asked if they would bestow the honour upon the Hollywood star.
But Falmouth town council member Mike Varney told local newspaper The Falmouth Packet: "I welcome the association with the film but that's as far as it should go. I do not like the idea of the council selling its soul just for publicity.
"There are many other people who are residents of Falmouth who are more deserving of such an honour and we don't want to impinge on the positions of freeman and honorary freeman of the town that already exist."
If Depp was granted the ancient traditional honour his rights wwould have included parking his horse-and-cart outside the Town Hall and driving his sheep through the town on market days.
Falmouth council have instead decided to grant 43-year-old Depp a lesser honour, such as 'honorary friend' of the town, or offering him the keys to the town.
Mayor Roger Bonney said: "This could be really great for Falmouth and could really help put us on the map and bring more visitors."
Talk PR approached Falmouth on behalf of Johnny Depp because it was the home of Britain's first woman pirate Lady Mary Killigrew and has other strong piratical links.
The company did approach other seaside towns in Cornwall.
( a bit more:
Under old laws freedom of the town would have given Depp the right to park a horse-and-cart outside the Town Hall and drive his sheep on market days. The actor was eventually awarded a lesser honour by the council.)

The film was best sold in Italy ."World Trade Center" was No. 2 for the weekend. It expanded its international exposure from one to 11 markets for an estimated $6.1 million. THE SECRET WORLD OF JOHNNY DEPP
The Intimate Biography of Hollywood's Best-Loved RebelAuthor: Goodall, Nigel

Thimble-deep bio of misfit maestro Johnny Depp.Intrepid celebrity biographer Goodall (Christian Slater, 2006) here updates his 2004 tome What's Eating Johnny Depp?, re-titling his efforts The Secret World of Johnny Depp; most curious, considering the fact that this ungainly hodgepodge of previously published interviews, biographies and promotional materials contains nothing that could be construed as a "secret." Goodall's method is to assemble the most innocuous and inane existing material on a given Hollywood tyro (much of it obviously culled from that lowest form of journalism, the junket interview); quote liberally from other reviewers (Roger Ebert should receive royalties); breathlessly synopsize the plots of the relevant films in a style somewhere between that of an extended pull-quote and a book report by a bright seventh grader; and pad, pad, pad, discoursing pointlessly on such ephemerally related topics as the authenticity of Pirates of the Caribbean's ships, or the travails of director Gillian Armstrong, who has never worked with this particular actor.
There is no context or analysis provided for understanding Depp's films or technique—Private Resort gets the same laborious plot rundown as Edward Scissorhands—but odd redundancies and gaffes abound (a favorite: Goodall refers to broadcaster Rush Limbaugh as "she"). These are at least mildly amusing and break the monotony of what feels like a surreally endless People magazine article. The book's bloodlessness and superficiality become mesmerizing—when Goodall musters a subjective opinion about something, it is along the lines of deeming the nightmarishly gruesome A Nightmare on Elm Street "frequently unpleasant." The author does get uncharacteristically heated up about critics; the reader will draw his or her own conclusions on this point. Goodall begins his story with the assertion that Depp is "finally achieving the kind of achievement that all Hollywood was applauding."
Depp plays oddballs and once messed up a hotel room. We knew this going in, right?

“I Am Legend” without Johnny Depp
It was reported recently in summer that "Pirates of the Caribbean " star Johnny Depp would be joining Will Smith in director Francis Lawrence's “I Am Legend”. IESB.net now notes that's not true now:”Remember the casting news that Johnny Depp had been cast in I Am Legend? According to our "on-set" source this rumor is pure BS, Depp never signed on and bottom line, he is not in the film...”
The IESB can also confirm the Phillip character is not in this script and that this picture will in fact be closer to The Omega Man film than the original 1954 novel written by Richard Matheson.
“I Am Legend” is planned to be release by Warner Bros in November, next year.

King of the world of adaptation
By Jay A. Fernandez, Special to The Times
September 20, 2006Scriptland is a new weekly feature on the work and professional lives of screenwriters.
Indiana Jones, meet Jack Sparrow. Jim Uhls, who successfully adapted the "unadaptable" Chuck Palahniuk novel "Fight Club," has been hired to turn "Rex Mundi," a series of graphic novels by Arvid Nelson and Eric Johnson, into a feature for Johnny Depp to star in and produce through his Infinitum Nihil (Infinite Nothing) production company.
"Rex Mundi" (King of the World) posits an alternate present of 1933 in which the Reformation never happened, the Inquisition is still in full swing, Europe remains dominated by the Catholic Church and the rest of the world consists of colonies. Depp, who became the biggest movie star in the world this summer by reprising his Keith Richards-inspired swashbuckler, would play a pathologist investigating the mysterious death of the priest who found him as an orphan.
"It's a noir-ish 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' " Uhls says. "There are murders and a mystery, and the lead character discovers a massive conspiracy, biblical in its origin." Though it may sound an awful lot like a "Da Vinci Code" rip-off, Depp will surely sport less offensive hair than Tom Hanks, even if he decides to base this new character on John Lydon (Johnny Rotten).

Sep. 18, 2006'Pirates' fights way back to No. 1
Thanks to a record-setting opening in Italy, the Walt Disney Co.'s "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" returned to the No. 1 spot internationally with a weekend boxoffice take of an estimated $16.5 million from 5,199 screens in 42 territories. "Dead Man's Chest," in the top spot for 10 of the past 11 weeks, has accumulated $612.5 million in total overseas boxoffice, ranking fifth among only six films ever to have crossed the $600 million gross mark internationally. Its global boxoffice tally stands at an estimated $1.03 billion. According to Buena Vista International, which distributes Disney product, "Dead Man's Chest" by the weekend should surpass 2002's "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," which stands at No. 4 all time internationally with a gross of $614.7 million. It was the sensational bow in Italy that powered this weekend. "Dead Man's Chest" made off with a mighty $12.8 million from 1,005 screens. BVI said it is a record for the market, nearly double the comparable five-day take of the first in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series.

London Studios to Serve as Fleet Street for Sweeney Todd Movie Musical
By Ernio Hernandez
13 Sep 2006The upcoming Tim Burton film version of Stephen Sondheim's musical Sweeney Todd starring Johnny Depp in the title role will begin filming Feb. 5 at London's Pinewood Studios, according to a Hollywood Reporter report.
Shortly after DreamWorks Studios confirmed plans for the film, the trade publication revealed Feb. 5, 2007, as the startdate for lensing at London's Pinewood Studios. Also added to the project were costume designer Colleen Atwood ("Memoirs of a Geisha") and cinematographer Dante Spinotti ("L.A. Confidential").
Pinewood Studios is no stranger to the musical film having served as the home of the recent screen take on The Phantom of the Opera and previously to Little Shop of Horrors and Victor/Victoria movies. Burton also has a history with the complex in which he filmed "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "The Planet of the Apes" and "Batman."
John Logan ("The Aviator," "Gladiator") penned the screenplay adaptation planned to begin work in for a "late 2007 release," according to the announcement. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will partner with Richard Zanuck and John Logan to produce the co-production with Warner Bros. Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically and Warner Bros. internationally.
Sweeney Todd follows the story of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him. The stage work featuring a score by Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler based on the play by Christopher Bond.
The original 1979 Broadway production starred Len Cariou as the barbarous barber with Angela Lansbury as his pie-making cohort in the Harold Prince-directed work. Both stars and the musical itself earned Tony Awards. In the current Broadway run, re-imagined by director John Doyle and starring Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone, the actors play their own instruments. Other incarnations of the work include a 1989 Broadway revival featuring Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler, a Kennedy Center run as part of a Sondheim Celebration with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Christine Baranski as well as a 2001 concert presentation, directed by Lonny Price and led by George Hearn and LuPone.
The film will reunite Depp with Burton once again — the duo have previously worked together on "Edward Scissorhands," "Ed Wood," "Sleepy Hollow," "Corpse Bride" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Vanessa Paradis to learn singing Johnny DeppJohnny Depp takes singing lessons from his love Vanessa Paradis, as he’s preparing for his new film, as lse.co.uk notes.
Johnny, who jointed “Edward Scissorhands” director Tim Burton for the musical, -will play demonic hairdresser Sweeney Todd, who butchers his customers and uses their remains as pie fillings.
So, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor has been rehearsing for the part with Vanessa at their family home.
Vanessa was allowed to take charge of Johnny's vocal coaching so that he wouldn't have to leave his family in France to be trained in Los Angeles.
"He is over the moon Vanessa can train him in the studio at their converted barn", a source told Britain's Daily Star newspaper.
Depp had to pass a singing test to land a part in musical “Sweeney Todd”.

Lake of Fire, the British director Tony Kaye's first feature film since 1998's popular and critically acclaimed American History X, will prompt lively debate when it comes out this year.
The director is a busy man these days. He is also completing an eight-song video cycle for Johnny Cash's posthumous album American V: a hundred highways. Stars have been queueing up to appear in the video, which features Cash's "tribute" to the Grim Reaper. Johnny Depp, Justin Timberlake and Kate Moss have all made the cut, mouthing a chorus. The point the sequence makes is that these celebs are mortal, just the same as us normal folk. How nice of them to admit it.

Tuesday, September 12, 2006; Posted: 5:39 PM - by BWW News DeskThe upcoming film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as the relentless demon barber of the title, will begin filming in February of 2007.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks Studios has announced that filming will take place at London's Pinewood Studios beginning on February 5th. Two members of the creative team have also been announced--costume designer Colleen Atwood (Oscar-winner for Memoirs of a Geisha) and cinematographer Dante Spinotti (Oscar-nominated for The Insider and L.A. Confidential).
Sweeney Todd, which will be a co-production with Warner Bros., marks the 6th collaboration between the actor and director. The previous Burton-Depp films have been Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow.
Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will partner with Richard Zanuck and John Logan to produce the screenplay adaptation which was written by Logan (The Aviator, Gladiator). A late 2007 release is planned. Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically and Warner Bros. internationally.
The Broadway production of Sweeney Todd, with Sondheim's music and lyrics and a book by Hugh Wheeler based on the play by Christopher Bond, opened in 1979 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. "Its mix of the comic, the dramatic and the macabre held together by Sondheim's movie-like score has had hundreds of productions throughout the world," according to press notes. John Doyle's highly acclaimed revival (for which he won a Tony) recently played the Eugene O'Neill Theatre; Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone starred.
The story of Sweeney Todd is of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him. He is helped by Mrs. Lovett, who bakes Sweeney's victims into "the worst pies in London."
Besides Depp, no other casting has been announced (although Jim Broadbent has been rumored for the role of Judge Turpin).

Translation of an article in the Parisien9 September 2006
Le ParisienJohnny Depp has acquired rights to Laurent Graff's novel
by Georges BlondFor his fortieth birthday, Laruent Graff will perhaps climb the steps of the ‘Palais des Fesitvals’ in Cannes between Johnny Depp and Jeanne Moreau. Whilst waiting, he publishes at the end of August his sixth novel, ‘Cry’ whose central character is the tollbooth attendant of the East Motorway, close to La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, where he lives, in Seine-et-Marne. Published by Gallimad, the author lives in a modest house, where we meet him. But the man of the house believes in luck. "And it’s opposite, back luck. We are on one side or the other, he assures. Sometimes it can tip." Obviously luck is on his side, since he sold the rights to his third novel ‘Happy Days’ to American actor Johnny Depp. Filming is planned for 2008 in the United States with Johnny Depp in the lead role.
In 2003, ‘Happy Days’, published two years earlier, knows an average progression: 5 000 copies sold in France, a theatrical adaptation in Belgium and 16 translations. Johnny Depp devours the English version and is fascinated by the hero who decides to become, at 35 years old, a boarder of the old people's home ‘Happy Days’. The final twist, as Laurent Graff likes to slip in at the end of each of his novels, seduces him. Because, forty years later, we find a man in his seventies, alone on his bench, surrounded by children who run and shout. ‘Happy Days’ has become a community centre that nobody had the heart to supplant. “I haven’t had any contact with Johnny Depp, the author says. I am happy that my book is the first of which he decided to acquire the rights. Papers, contracts, all happened between my editor, the Dilettante, and the American agents. The rules were respected. A first option that blocks the rights for eighteen months up to last June, a second for eighteen months until the end year 2007. Financially, 42 500 dollars each time. Lastly the firm purchase for 500 000 dollars. Tidy sums that I must share with the two agents involved in the deal and my editor." Laurent Graff will not be involved in the production of the feature film. “Yet I wrote to Johnny Depp asking him whether it were possible to follow one day of filming… And to suggest to him signing up Jeanne Moreau to play Mireille. I am waiting for his answer.”
In the Original French

'Pirates' one in a billion
'Chest' joins 'Titanic,' 'Return of the King' as top earner
By VARIETY STAFF
Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" should join "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" today as the only movies ever released to top $1 billion in worldwide grosses.
The "Pirates" sequel has been out of the domestic top 10 for the past two weekends, but still managed to bring in $4.9 million during the Labor Day weekend to lift Stateside cume past $414 million -- the sixth-highest on the all-time list.
It is mainly recent foreign biz that's pushed "Dead Man's Chest" over the 10-figure mark. The pic's remained dominant internationally with a nine-weekend winning streak and, as of Tuesday, had cumed around $583 million offshore.
Rather than using a day-and-date worldwide release that would have gone up against the final of soccer's World Cup, BVI opted to start with only seven offshore territories in its first frame, followed by a gradual expansion through the rest of summer. Top foreign markets have been the U.K. at $94 million and Japan with $78 million. "Chest" should add another significant chunk of biz from Italy, where the final opening is set for Sept. 15.
There's no chance for "Dead Man's Chest" to catch "Titanic," which stands at $1.83 billion, and it would need another $130 million to overtake "The Return of the King" at $1.13 billion.
The success of "Chest" highlights several key factors: the worldwide drawing power of Johnny Depp; the still-substantial goodwill from "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," which topped $650 million worldwide; and pic's deep fan appeal despite mostly so-so reviews.
Hitting the billion-dollar mark raises the bar on expectations for the performance by "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," which opens May 25 at the start of the Memorial Day weekend. The final part of the trilogy will enter a hyper-competitive market, with Sony launching "Spider-Man 3" on May 4 and Paramount opening "Shrek the Third" on May 18.

"Pirates" nears historic $1 billion mark
By Frank Segers Tue Sep 5, 1:44 AM ETLOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Scoring a ninth consecutive weekend as the most popular movie at the foreign box office, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" is poised to become only the third movie to gross more than $1 billion in global ticket sales.
The worldwide box office for the Disney sequel stands at $993.7 million, of which $579.5 million was generated internationally. The $1 billion mark should be exceeded by Friday, the company says.
The global record is held by 1997's "Titanic" (global boxoffice of $1.8 billion), while 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" ended up with $1.1 billion.
The foreign box office total for "Pirates" was enriched over the weekend by an estimated $11.6 million from 49 territories.
Topping the list were France, an estimated $2.4 million in the sixth weekend for a total of $46.5 million, and Japan, $1.6 million for a market total of $78.4 million.
"Miami Vice" grossed an estimated $7.7 million, raising its international gross to $64.5 million. A solid contributor was Japan, where the
Michael Mann actioner opened on Saturday, winding the weekend with an estimated $1.7 million. The No. 3 slot last weekend went to "Cars," which cruised to an estimated $7.1 million from 34 territories, raising its international total to $172 million.
The biggest of "Cars"' weekend numbers were posted in Italy: an estimated $2.1 million for a market total of $10.1 million.
"Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties" finished No. 4 with an estimated $6.8 million from 35 markets. No. 5 was "Monster House," the animation title backed by
Robert Zemeckis and
Steven Spielberg, which remained largely static, pulling an estimated $6 million from 36 markets. It had a solid No. 3 opening in Spain with an estimated $1.3 million."The Sentinel" picked up some international push with six openings, registering an overall weekend estimate of $4.6 million and taking its overseas tally to $23.5 million.

BLOOM: DEPP'S A FREAK
By Jenny McQuaileORLANDO Bloom pokes fun at Pirates of the Caribbean co-star Johnny Depp in the new series of Extras.
In the first episode of Ricky Gervais's award-winning BBC2 comedy he plays a vain actor who can't believe that an extra doesn't fancy him.
Orlando tells the extra, played by TV comedy star Ashley Jensen, 36, the ladies were all over him on the film set, ignoring heart-throb Johnny.
The Brit actor and Lord of the Rings star, 27, joked: "It's my looks that all the girls fawn over. Nobody was bothered about Johnny on set.
"Johnny freak I make art-house movies and have stupid scissors for hands. Willy Wonka?" more like Johnny W***er."
Orlando is one of several stars lined up for the second series starting September 14.

Culture Vulture: Utah lures big shots in August
By Brandon Griggs
Tribune ColumnistAugust is traditionally a slow month for celebrity sightings in Utah. Famous folks prefer to visit our fair state in ski season, usually during January's Sundance Film Festival. But last month brought a rare convergence of Hollywood stars, sports figures, musicians and political bigwigs. For the sheer depth and diversity of the celebrity wattage, it may have been the most happening month in Utah since the Olympics.
Here's a partial list of visitors: Country stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, soccer star David Beckham, actor Tom Cruise, actress Katie Holmes, actor Johnny Depp, rockers Alice Cooper, Bonnie Raitt and Dave Matthews, songwriter/composer Randy Newman, real-estate mogul Donald Trump, Jazz great John Stockton, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, actor Sean Astin ("The Lord of the Rings"), actor Henry Thomas ("E.T."), golfers Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam, TV journalist Andrea Mitchell, her husband economist Alan Greenspan, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Republican strategist Karl Rove and President George W. Bush.
None of these folks, as far as I can tell, visited Utah for its culture or scenery. Instead they came for political spin-making (the Bushies) or paying gigs (almost everyone else). I don't know what this all means, but it made for a lively month. Now can things get back to normal around here?

01 September 2006Buena Vista International (BVI)'s Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest will still be the one to beat as it bears down on $1bn in global ticket sales and attempts a ninth consecutive weekend as the international box office champion.
The adventure sequel thus far stands at $976m of which $566.8m was taken at the international box office.
There are no openings planned for the weekend, but strong holds are expected in all territories and executives have revised their earlier forecast and expect it to cross $1bn by the end of next week.

Last Updated: 3-September-2006 22:26:51Led by one of the biggest all-time hits, Johnny Depp\'s \"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man\'s Chest,\" Hollywood will have rung up about $3.85 billion in domestic ticket sales from the first weekend in May through Labor Day, up 6.3 percent from the same period last year, according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
Factoring in higher ticket prices, movie attendance was up about 3.1 percent.
\"If every year were like this, it would be fine,\" said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations. \"Hollywood will take solid over slump any day.\" For summer 2005, revenues declined 8.5 percent and attendance tumbled 11.4 percent compared to 2004\'s.
This summer\'s revenues will come in about 2 to 3 percent below those of 2004, a strong box-office season. This summer\'s attendance will be down about 8 percent compared to 2004\'s.
Last year brought continual bad headlines as the flop of the week hit theaters, with Hollywood\'s overall revenues down weekend after weekend. Analysts theorized that home theaters and other personal entertainment options were undermining cinema business.
\"The great thing this year is it seemed like audiences found a picture they wanted to see every week and sometimes two. That didn\'t happen last year,\" said Jeff Blake, vice chairman at Sony, which had summer hits with Tom Hanks\' \"The Da Vinci Code\" and Will Ferrell\'s \"Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.\" \"Clearly, there were some weekends last year where people would say, `Let\'s not go to the movies.\'\" The opposite happened this year as most big films delivered, pulling in steady audiences. Overall movie revenues were up 14 out of 17 weekends this summer.
\"I truly believe the axiom that lines beget lines. When you\'re on a roll, everything positive happens to you,\" said Chuck Viane, head of distribution at Disney, which released \"Pirates of the Caribbean\" and had a blockbuster with the animated comedy \"Cars.\" \"Last year, there was so much negative spin in the press and the minds of people, I think it created a mind-set. This year, everything started positive and it\'s continued straight through.\" \"Pirates of the Caribbean\" raced past $400 million domestically, only the seventh movie to top that mark. \"Cars,\" \"X-Men: The Last Stand\" and \"The Da Vinci Code\" all made it past $200 million, with \"Superman Returns\" at $196 million and creeping toward that level.
The first big-screen adventure for the Man of Steel since 1987\'s \"Superman IV: The Quest for Peace,\" \"Superman Returns\" drew huge audiences. But box-office analysts had expected it to do better considering how well other elite superhero franchises have done, such as \"Spider-Man\" and \"X-Men.\" Another underachiever was Tom Cruise\'s \"Mission: Impossible III,\" which took in a respectable $133 million but fell far short of the 1996 original ($181 million) and 2000\'s sequel ($215 million). Fans apparently were turned off by Cruise\'s schoolboy antics in his romance with Katie Holmes and his religious preaching on Scientology.

Johnny Depp eyes up Welsh homeSep 3 2006
Nathan Bevan, Wales on Sunday
COULD Hollywood's favourite pirate be about to drop anchor in Wales?
Johnny Depp, aka Captain Jack Sparrow, is rumoured to be swapping the high seas for a land-lubbing holiday home in the sleepy market town of Crickhowell.
Industry insiders claim the handsome heart-throb fell in love with the breathtaking countryside of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park when he stayed in the area while filming bodice-ripping period romp The Libertine in 2004.
And now the Pirates of The Caribbean star, who back then set the local female population's hearts aflutter in his role as notorious 17th Century womaniser The Earl of Rochester, looks set to cause palpitations should he splash out on any of the treasure trove of lavish properties up for sale.
Revealing how the Academy Award-nominee's people are researching the housing market for him, one source told Wales on Sunday: "Johnny had a great time when he was in Wales and loved the scenery and sense of history of the place.
"He likes the pace of life there and enjoys the anonymity living somewhere like that would afford him."
Mayor of Crickhowell Geoff Powell can't wait to be the first to welcome the superstar, who famously quit the bright lights of LA and moved full-time to rural France several years ago after meeting his gorgeous partner, French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis.
The couple now have two young children, daughter Lily-Rose and son John.
"I'm all for rural regeneration and new money can only be a good thing for the countryside," he said.
"We've had a lot of people coming to this neck of the woods - ex-financial traders and the like - doing up converted barns to live in and eventually starting up their own businesses down here and creating a lot of extra local jobs.
"I'm sure that if Johnny Depp moves here he'll be taking on some staff; gardeners, cleaners and builders to keep all that cash flowing around.
"He's a well-respected actor and so it seems, a very private guy, so I'm not worried about him bringing the wrong crowd here."
Joan Roberts, director of JDR Estates in Hereford who handle properties throughout the area, said someone like Depp would fit right into his new surroundings.
"It's chocolate-box country round there and that, along with the remoteness of area, is what's appealing to him. They're very low-key people these stars, which makes that particular housing market very desirable indeed.
"I doubt many of the people who live in these villages would even know Johnny Depp had moved there if they hadn't read about it in the paper first.
"I mean, you only really know the Queen's at home if the flag is flying, don't you?"
But not everyone is convinced.
James Suter, who co-owns the nearby Gliffaes Country House Hotel where Depp was reported to have stayed while previously filming in Wales, said: "I wouldn't mind so much if he was going to live here the whole year round, but I doubt he'd be around for much more than one month out of 12."
Mr Suter, who also sits on the National Park Committee where the problem of lack of affordable housing is a regular topic of debate, added: "From east of Bwlch to Abergavenny, trying to find a place has become all but impossible for most - the last thing we want is another big house going unoccupied for most of the time.
"I'd much rather it went to a local. Besides the type of people that level of celebrity attract aren't the sort we want around here.
"We want tourists to come and enjoy the splendour of our national park, not just drive around looking for an old converted barn that some film star has moved into."

Everywhere Johnny Depp goes, there seems to be a stream of screaming girls trailing behind him ... like the wake behind a pirate ship.At a recent Malibu autograph session, Depp was dressed unremarkably in a long-sleeve, pirate-themed shirt. His now-trademark double-beard braid, however, unmistakably identified him as the man who gave life to Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp was in doing reshoots for the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean 3."
As his car drove away he waved to the frenetic crowd, who screamed with piercing glee.
