From The SunPub bar on Johnny Depp
October 29, 2007
FILM star Johnny Depp was turned away from a village pub – because he had not booked a table.Depp, 43, wanted a meal at the trendy Fox and Goose Inn at Fressingfield, Suffolk.
But he missed out because all the 18th century pub’s tables were already taken.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star is reportedly looking for a home in the area.

Inside the Actors Studio: Johnny Depp
Shout Factory // PG // $14.99 // November 20, 2007
Review by Jamie S. Rich | posted October 28, 2007 |![]()
THE SHOW:
Inside the Actors Studio has been running on the Bravo Network for nearly fourteen years now. An outcropping of the famous acting school that has been active since the middle of the last century, it is an open classroom, an extension of the drama department coursework at the New School in New York. The format has been the same since the beginning: an actor stops by, sits for an hour or more with host James Lipton discussing his or her career, Lipton asks the guest a series of questions originally invented by Marcel Proust, and then the students in the audience ask a few questions about craft.
In 2002, as part of the show's eighth season, Johnny Depp participated in the forum, and it's that episode that makes up the new Inside the Actors Studio: Johnny Depp. At that point in the actor's history, his most recent films were Chocolat, which is discussed briefly, and Blow, which only comes up in the collection of photos that illustrates Lipton's introduction of the performer.
Depp is a good subject, openly guarded and shy, thoughtfully considering his answers and what he is willing to share. A droll sense of humor emerges the more comfortable he gets in the hot seat. James Lipton's approach of going from birth through early life and career and all the way to the actor's most recent project serves to put the subject at ease. The questions of childhood and parentage work as a kind of nest liner, a reassurance that the interviewee is in a place he can feel safe being candid.
There is not a lot to dissect here. The show runs a little over fifty minutes, and Depp's perspective is wholly unique, as anyone who has tracked his choices of acting roles will already know. It would have been preferable to get some kind of updated edition, covering his transition into blockbuster superstar in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and his further explorations with his regular collaborator, Tim Burton, up to and including the forthcoming Sweeney Todd. Perhaps this is something to consider for future volumes of the series (there have been two boxed sets and a couple of individual releases like this one so far). Even if the actor can't come back to the classroom, maybe Lipton could go to the actor for a quick catch-up.
Still, Inside the Actors Studio: Johnny Depp is what it is. I really like Johnny Depp (Lipton can count me among the teenagers that worshipped him on 21 Jump Street), and I like hearing artisans discuss their craft. Inside the Actors Studio is an unadorned platform for that to happen, and this selection in particular is free of hype, far more straightforward than your average talk show or promotional interview.

THE DVDVideo:
Inside the Actors Studio: Johnny Depp is shown at its original fullscreen aspect ratio. Shot for television, the picture quality is average. It's not really a special effects venue, so the DVD really only requires a conscientious transfer, and that's what we get here.Sound:
A very standard stereo mix with Closed Captioning.Extras:
Unlike previous Inside the Actors Studio releases, the Johnny Depp disc has no deleted scenes. The only extra here is James Lipton's new video introduction that plays before the episode. That's it. Not even a scene selection menu. The DVD is packaged in a clear plastic case with a printed outer slipcover.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Recommended. Inside the Actors Studio: Johnny Depp is another excellent choice in the Shout! Factory series of DVD selections from the long-running television series. A show of this kind is only as good as its guests, and Johnny Depp has an excellent filmography worthy of study. An involving hour of conversation.

Dracula's and Depp's Undying Domain: 1486 North Sweetzer, West Hollywood
Scott Huver
Hollywood.com Staff![]()
Gothca! This exotic mansion in West Hollywood only looks like the perfect haunting grounds for all kinds of ghosts, ghouls and even vampires, so much so that even today local legends insist that it was the home of film's original bloodsucker Bela Lugosi, but Dracula never actually hung his cape there.Built by a mining magnate in 1927 and dubbed "Mt. Kalmia" (after a mountain laurel), the extravagant four-acre estate resembled a Bavarian castle imported straight from Transylvania, complete with battlements and rounded turrets and towers, seven bedrooms, a Louis XVI drawing room and interiors designed to mimic the terraced grounds so there were a dozen different levels.
After the owner died in 1937 it became a popular rental spot for parties for celebrities' children, before passing through several residents, including Howard Hughes' shadowy right-hand man Noah Dietrich, Motown Records impresario Berry Gordy and high-powered divorce lawyer Marvin Michelson. Each had spooky enough reputations, but were hardly nosferatu, yet the estate would become forever known as "Dracula's Castle" after decades of not-so-accurate Hollywood tour guides convinced wide-eyed tourists that Lugosi lived there (the actor actually lived more modestly in various homes throughout Hollywood during his career).
Perhaps believing--and besotted with--the notion that Mt. Kalmia really once was Lugosi's lair, actor Johnny Depp purchased the palatial estate in 1995 shortly after playing the giddy schlock filmmaker Ed Wood, a close friend of Lugosi (played by Martin Landau) in the actor's declining years—and it was a short drive down Sunset to Depp's nightclub, the Viper Room.
Depp lived there for several years until relocating to Europe full-time (apparently the home's faux-Euro vibe was not enough, even by Hollywood standards) but he still holds the keys to the castle, and frequently loans it out to friends: in 2007 his Pirates of the Caribbean co-star Orlando Bloom moved in. So even if it never served as a vampiric palace, it makes a fitting stronghold for spectral buccaneers.

Bond News - 17-10-07
James Bond ranks as third favourite film character in UKCaptain Jack Sparrow in the hit Pirates of the Caribbean movies has been voted the UK’s favourite big-screen character.
Captain Jack, played by heartthrob Johnny Depp, beat Star Wars’ villain Darth Vader into second place in the poll of 4,000 movie fans.
James Bond, played by Daniel Craig in the most recent spy thriller Casino Royale, is third in the survey by Total Film magazine.
Boy wizard Harry Potter (68th), singleton Bridget Jones (16), and caped crusader Batman (11) fail to make it into the top ten most-loved movie characters.
Adventurer and archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is fourth while Gollum, as voiced by Andy Serkis in Lord of the Rings, is fifth, followed by Robert De Niro’s iconic part as loner Travis Bickle in acclaimed Martin Scorsese movie Taxi Driver.
Sigourney Weaver’s character, Ellen Ripley, in the Alien films was the only female in the top ten, taking seventh place.
Mafia boss Michael Corleone in The Godfather is eighth, with Star Wars space cowboy Han Solo and serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) completing the top ten.
Total Film editor Matt Mueller said: “Captain Jack Sparrow has totally caught everyone’s imagination – he’s the perfect combination of mischief, adventure and alcohol – being slightly drunk at all times.
“It is Jack’s sense of fun that made fans put him way out in front of a traditional UK favourite, James Bond.
“We were very surprised that Harry Potter didn’t rank higher in the poll, but a strong showing from bad guys like Hannibal Lecter and Gollum proves that the villains are far more interesting than the good guys.”
Top 20 Favourite Movie Characters:
1. Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean)
2. Darth Vader (Star Wars)
3. James Bond

Depp goes Gonzo again
Actor to star in 'The Rum Diary'
By DIANE GARRETT'The Rum Diary'
Johnny Depp will channel Hunter S. Thompson once again in Warner Independent's adaptation of "The Rum Diary."Thesp is producing with Graham King, who acquired rights to Thompson's novel for his GK Films shingle and Depp's Infinitum Nihil outfit. Bruce Robinson ("Withnail and I") will write and direct the adaptation, which Film Engine is also producing.
Depp will play Paul Kemp, a freelance journo writing for a rundown newspaper in 1950s Puerto Rico and surrounded by a bunch of lost souls bent on self-destruction. The journo was 22 when he wrote the autobiographical novel and had yet to develop his trademark gonzo style. It was written in 1959 but not published until 1998.
Depp previously starred in the bigscreen adaptation of Thompson's psychedelic-soaked adventures chronicled in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," published in 1972.
Depp just finished work on "Sweeney Todd" and is expected to do "The Rum Diary" after "Shantaram," Mira Nair's adaptation of the novel about an Australian drug addict who resumes his life of crime after escaping to India.
Infinitum and King are producing that project with Plan B.
Depp has a series of other projects in the works with King through Infinitum, which recently reupped its deal with King. They include an adaptation of "Dark Shadows" (Daily Variety, July 27) and "Sasha's Story: The Life and Death of a Russian Spy."
More than one optionKing's GK Films banner is skedded to begin lensing "The Young Victoria" with Emily Blunt this summer.
Besides "Withnail and I," Robinson previously penned "The Killing Fields." He also wrote and directed "How to Get Ahead in Advertising" and "Jennifer 8."

For those who like to keep track of Johnny, he was at Vanessa's concert last night at La Ferme du Buisson in Noisiel (http://www.lafermedubuisson.com/ ), a bit east of Paris. This was her no frills dry-run for the official opening of her concert tour tonight. In addition to Johnny, (who kept himself back and well out of the limelight but was spotted by a concert-goer) the chilren, and Vanessa's parents and sister were also there. At one point Jack tried to join the proceedings and yelled out "coucou Maman" (an informal way of saying hi there) to great hilarity. What a cutie. Moss to auction replica of dress that snared Johnny Depp
By Natalie FahyThey say fashions always come around again - and now Kate Moss is to wear and auction off an exact replica of the dress she wore more than a decade ago to woo Johnny Depp.
The dress, a vintage 1920s flapper dress, was first worn by the 33-year-old when she met Depp in New York in 1994.
Now an exact copy of the dress has been made and will be worn by Kate to the Fashion Rocks charity gala event.
advertisementIt will then be auctioned off at Topshop's central London store. There will also be just 500 copies on sale for £250.
According to the Mail on Sunday, the Croydon-born model had kept the dress under her bed in a box.
When asked for ideas for the gala in June, Kate came up with the dress under her bed.
The replica, unlike the original, is adorned with 60,000 Swarovski crystal glass pieces.
Topshop boss Sir Philip Green told the Mail on Sunday: "The dress is made and Kate tried it on yesterday.
"I saw it on her - it's sensational."
Kate Moss is to wear an exact replica of the dress she famously wooed Johnny Depp in to a charity gala.

Capping a look![]()
Who’d have thought wrinkles would rescue the millinery business? But that’s what’s happening. Just when you’d decided that hat-making was the last legal industry in the world you’d want your children to end up finding employment in, hats are staging a comeback. Not at formal events, ironically, where judging by the weddings I’ve attended lately, hats are about as fashionable as the farthingale among the younger generations.
But for everyday life, weirdly, they’re proliferating. This has been a stealth revival over several winters, partially spurred on by the annual five-minute snowflake fest, and partly by the fact that, in their different ways, Johnny Depp and P Diddy have both somehow managed to give fedoras attitude again.
But it was this past summer that hats started to look like proper accessories for stylish adults. Elle Macpherson in her straw Stetsons, Moss in her summerweight trilbies, Sienna Miller working her Panama with exceptionally pleasing results (hot tip: wear with micro bikini, toned body and preferably some up-and-coming model-turned-actor in the background) can all take credit. So too can Kylie in her baker boy caps. Keira Knightley in a bowler hat was more of a moot point, but at least it provided an outlet for someone’s brim-moulding skills.
What was lovely about this flurry-ette of summer headwear was that, the bowler aside, none of it looked particularly contrived. The successful sorties, like the best modern developments in fashion, had a chic look of the functional about them – probably because they were functional, now that A-listers are increasingly taking steps to protect their faces from the sun. This takes us to the crux of good hat-wearing: for where there is a clear, defined purpose to a hat, there is a hat that looks comfortable on its perch, and a wearer who seems at ease with themselves, rather than looking like a self-conscious pillock.
With luck, this jaunty turn of events will accelerate through winter. For the first time in years, many designers accessorised their catwalk collections with hats, from the full-brimmed, late Seventies-inspired hats at Marc Jacobs, the Forties-style fedoras at Roberto Cavalli and the furry peaked caps at Luella, to the glossy cloches at Proenza Schouler and berets at Ralph Lauren.
Carefully chosen, hats are highly flattering, framing the face, casting shadows that create angles and highlight cheekbones. But let’s not pretend they’re easy. Those of a nervous disposition will probably wish to start with a casual, unhattish sort of hat – the millinery equivalent of a T-shirt.
Enter the beanie, which being not so much a hat, more of a head sock, ought to be the easiest option. Actually, the beanie is quite tricky to get right if you don’t have a cascade of long, bouncy locks to offset the harsh head-suction effect. Berets can look fabulous on someone with a big enough head, ditto the tam-o’-shanter, which is really just a beret on steroids. Once you’ve got used to the feel of these, I’d strongly recommend a fedora – as ever Philip Treacy’s are the gold standard. Nothing creates the illusion of cheekbones with so little pain. Plus it keeps the rain off. You can’t say the same for implants.
