Swashbuckler Stone inspired Johnny Depp

The Guardian

Maybe it was Keith Richards' reputation as the wild man of rock and roll that persuaded Johnny Depp to use him as the model for his screen character Jack Sparrow, the hero of the Hollywood film series Pirates of the Caribbean.

But with the release of an oil painting to a London gallery, the public can consider another theory: perhaps it was because the actor had already seen an oil of Richards depicted as a pirate, complete with cutlass and treasure casket. The artwork, which goes on public display for the first time, was painted by Paul Karslake, the brother-in-law of Richards' bandmate Ronnie Wood. It has been hanging at the guitarist's home since 1988 but will be part of Karslake's exhibition, Survivors, at the Artisan gallery in the capital.

In 2003 Depp had said: "I was thinking about the pirates of the 18th century, about how they were the rock stars of their day. So I thought, who's the greatest rock and roll star? To me it's Keith Richards, hands down. Keith is a bit of a pirate himself."

Karslake was specific. "My 6ft painting of Keith was hung in his New York apartment and was seen by his dinner guest, Johnny Depp ... who had recently received a script for a pirate film."

A third film in the Pirates series is to be released next year.

Retailers nationwide should probably send actor Johnny Depp a nice, big thank-you card this week.

Depp's portrayal of the slightly off-center and Keith Richardsesque Capt. Jack Sparrow character in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie series has been boffo at cash registers as far as Halloween costumes are concerned.

"We've sold a lot of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' stuff. That was the hot one," said Mark Bodwell, seasonal department manager at Wal-Mart Supercenter in Quincy.

From Capt. Jack's dreadlocks to simple pirate accessories, this year's second installment of the "Caribbean" trilogy has struck a nerve with costume buyers nationwide.

"It's just ridiculous, it really is," said Dorice Dionne of Dedham, Mass.-based iParty, in an interview with USA Today. "Every week I look at the sales, and I can't believe how many items are pirate."

Shirl Main of Shirl's Sew Shop at 140 Main in New Canton says information like that is not surprising.

"Movie themes are always the most popular for costumes," Main said.

As Oh Johnny! reporter last month from a Los Angeles Times source, Johnny plans to appear in a Rex Mundi film.  For those of you interested in learning about the source material, HERE is a good review of the first graphic novel.
Also we have another news story from Newsarama
JOHNNY DEPP TO STAR IN REX MUNDI FILM
According to the Los Angeles Times, Johnny Depp is Dr. Julien Sauniere.

That would be the lead character in the film adaptation of Arvid Nelson's Rex Mundi. Jim Uhls, who adapted Fight Club will write the screenplay based on the comic series (which recently moved from Image to Dark Horse). Depp will both star and produce the film through his Infinitum Nihil (Infinite Nothing) production company.

From the Times:

Rex Mundi (King of the World) posits an alternate present of 1933 in which the Reformation never happened, the Inquisition is still in full swing, Europe remains dominated by the Catholic Church and the rest of the world consists of colonies. Depp, who became the biggest movie star in the world this summer by reprising his Keith Richards-inspired swashbuckler, would play a pathologist investigating the mysterious death of the priest who found him as an orphan.

"It's a noir-ish 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' " Uhls says. "There are murders and a mystery, and the lead character discovers a massive conspiracy, biblical in its origin." Though it may sound an awful lot like a "Da Vinci Code" rip-off, Depp will surely sport less offensive hair than Tom Hanks, even if he decides to base this new character on John Lydon (Johnny Rotten).

Or - as Dark Horse describes the series:

In a Paris where magic is real and the Catholic Church never lost its political power, one man's quest to solve a murder may lead him to the Holy Grail itself!

Doctor Julien Saunière continues his investigation into the theft of a mysterious medieval scroll, only dimly aware of the forces tugging him to the doorstep of the powerful Duke of Lorraine. Lorraine wants to provoke a massive, globe-spanning war that will soak the world in blood-but why? The answer to that question, a deadly confrontation in the ancient catacombs beneath Paris, and a blasphemous revelation about Judas, Christ's betrayer, all await Julien in this volume of the critically acclaimed series Rex Mundi!

CARY Grant has been voted the smoothest celebrity of all time, according to a survey.

The suave Englishman starred alongside some of Hollywood's leading ladies, including Audrey and Katharine Hepburn, Sophia Loren and Ingrid Bergman.

Heart-throb Johnny Depp was runner-up in the poll of 6000 women by electrical firm Kenwood. Two James Bonds appeared in the top five - with Pierce Brosnan at three, one place above the classic 007, Sean Connery.

Completing the top five was Spanish actor Antonio Banderas. Continuing the European trend, French ex-footballer David Ginola came in sixth.

Crooner Dean Martin and action man Steve McQueen were seventh and eighth respectively.

Original Rat Pack leader Frank Sinatra just scraped in at ninth place, ahead of actor Hugh Grant.

    - Johnny Depp on being a celebrity.

# 7

Having cut his teeth on the popular ‘80s television show 21 Jump Street and a whole host of schlocky films (like 1985’s sex comedy Private Resort), Johnny Depp deftly transformed himself into a reliable yet thoroughly unpredictable cinematic presence via a series of memorable films, such as 1990’s Edward Scissorhands, 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and 2001’s Blow. Johnny’s star status changed exponentially with the release of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film in 2003, which garnered him his first Academy Award nomination.

His second nomination came the following year for his poignant performance in 2004’s Finding Neverland. Now raking in a reported $20 million per film, it's clear that Depp’s onscreen charisma and bad-boy charm make him an undeniable box-office draw.
Behind the scenes

Though he’s been linked with many famous faces in the past (including Kate Moss and Winona Ryder), Johnny seems to have found true love with French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis. The pair has two children and currently resides in France. Johnny’s desire to keep his family out of the public eye has thus far proven to be extremely successful, and as such, he’s generally had few run-ins with the paparazzi and their ilk.

Little is known of Johnny’s extracurricular activities, though he has long-since established himself as a thoroughly adept musician; he used to be in a band called P and has made appearances on a couple of Oasis songs. His passion for music is also reflected in his ownership -- along with Sean Penn and John Malkovich -- of a Parisian nightclub called Man Ray.
On the horizon

Now that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest has become one of the top-grossing films in cinematic history, Johnny seemingly has the ability to write his own ticket. But rather than take on a big-budget action film or a predictable romantic comedy, Johnny is thus far sticking to his quirky, almost avant-garde roots. In addition to next year’s conclusion to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Johnny is currently prepping an adaptation of the Sweeney Todd musical with frequent collaborator Tim Burton.

Johnny has also put on the producer’s hat for the first time in his career, as he is producing a slew of movies slated for release in 2007 and 2008, such as A Long Way Down, The Rum Diary and Happy Days.

"With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's just not acting. It's lying."

Aquarium’s Newest IMAX Film “Deep Sea 3D” Awarded Top Honor At Film Festival
by Kathie Fulgham
posted October 19, 2006

The newest Tennessee Aquarium IMAX film, “Deep Sea 3D,” which gives visitors an unreal experience that feels so real when they face off with wolf eels, darting squid or hunt with hungry sand tiger sharks has recently been awarded the top honor at the International Wildscreen Film Festival in Bristol, UK.

“In order to complement the Tennessee Aquarium’s natural discovery and adventure, many excellent sea-themed IMAX 2D and 3D films have debuted at Aquarium’s IMAX Theater since we opened it in 1996,” said Charlie Arant, Aquarium CEO. “But when we previewed this particular film for our visitors, we knew we had something so spectacular, vivid and full of action, our visitors couldn’t resist it.”

“Deep Sea 3D” was awarded the top honor in the Large Format category at the Panda Awards, the world's most prestigious awards for films about the natural world. The event is part of the Wildscreen Festival in Bristol, UK.

Narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, "Deep Sea 3D" transforms viewers into fearless undersea explorers from the first moment a wave washes over the audience and the camera dips below the surface of the water to reveal a vibrant world of coral-filled seas inhabited by myriads of strangely beautiful and oddly fierce creatures.

Visitors are captivated as a mantis shrimp attacks its prey with the force of a 22-caliber bullet and witness the rarely observed, once-a-year, nighttime spectacle of coral spawning in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.

“Deep Sea 3D” features nine different ocean locations from Hawaii to British Columbia and transports viewers to the exciting world of undersea life as the spectacular 3D effects allow moviegoers to feel as though they are actually swimming alongside some of the most awesome, dangerous and colorful creatures in our world’s watery wonderland.

“Deep Sea 3D” enables moviegoers to experience the underwater world in a way never before achieved through the 3D experience. Advanced technology and filming techniques allow viewers to feel as though they are actually swimming with these incredible creatures (except, of course without having to get wet).

The deep sea “stars” of the film may look very familiar to Aquarium-goers. The grunts, reef fish, sea stars, sea turtles, sand bar and sand tiger sharks, rays and eels in “Deep Sea 3D” also can be seen face-to-fin at the Aquarium. “Deep Sea 3D”comes to life as you witness these animals in their Aquarium environments – especially during October’s Thrills and Gills (for more info, see link below).

Sand Tiger Shark
With jagged, razor-like teeth and a body length of up to 10 feet, the sand tiger shark looks menacing. However, in “Deep Sea 3D”as well as in its home at the Tennessee Aquarium the sand tiger is one of the least aggressive sharks known to humans. It has extremely durable skin that allows it to hunt in reefs such as the Flower Garden Banks. This tough skin enables it to dig deep inside the extremely sharp edges of the coral without injury to itself. You can see four sand tiger sharks in the Secret Reef exhibit in the Aquarium’s Ocean Journey Building.

Giant Pacific Octopus
Octopi are invertebrates related to the squid and chambered nautilus. A giant Pacific octopus may weigh up to several hundred pounds and have an arm span of more than 30 feet. They eat crustaceans and mollusks. The giant Pacific octopus has the ability to change its color to blend with its surroundings. They use this camouflage to protect themselves from predators but they also may defend themselves by expelling a stream of ink while it jets off in the other direction. Octopi have three hearts that pump blue blood and these fantastic animals can be seen in “Deep Sea 3D” and in the Aquarium’s gallery, Boneless Beauties.

Green Sea Turtle
Although typically thought of to be a slow-moving creature the green sea turtle can swim at speeds up to 19 miles per hour! This animal breathes through its skin. They are able to tolerate very low levels of oxygen and can remain under water for up to three hours at a time. Unlike land turtles, the sea turtle cannot draw its legs and head into its shell but it does have very leathery skin to protect itself. A female may nest more than once per season and can lay up to 300 eggs in a single nest! Two sea turtles call the Aquarium home with a 250 pound male living in the Secret Reef exhibit and the other, a newly rehabilitated turtle, living in the Gulf of Mexico exhibit.

Coral
Corals are tiny animals and each individual is called a polyp. Coral gets its color from the microscopic algae, or zooxanthellae that live within the coral’s tissue. Coral reproduces itself by spawning. This occurs once a year in the Flower Garden Banks eight days after the full moon in August. The beauty of the Flower Garden Banks in the Gulf of Mexico featured in the film also can be experienced up close and personal at Ocean Journey where the same reef system has been duplicated in the Secret Reef exhibit. This reef system was duplicated using man-made materials because removing a living reef would be extremely damaging to the environment and would destroy this fragile ecosystem.

Ocean's Thirteen actor George Clooney recently revealed that he is a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, and says he admires his outstanding work in the movies.

He also praised Depp for his amazing talent and good business sense.

"Johnny just keeps doing really good stuff. He's a really, really smart and good actor," the Post Chronicle quoted him as saying.

Clooney has even written to Depp, 43, to express his admiration.

"I've written letters to him just so say, 'Hey, man, you're flaming great,'" he added.

Meanwhile, Clooney has revealed he could never run for president because he has had too much sex. The 45-year-old - who has dated a string of Hollywood beauties including Renee Zellweger and Teri Hatcher - says his racy past would ruin his chances in politics.

"I couldn't run for office, I've slept with far too many women. I have a very keen interest in political issue, but if I decided to run for office there would be a few juicy stories dragged back from the depths," he said.

The legendary — and legendarily difficult — director's latest opus, 'Tideland,' finds his vision as singular as ever.

MTV: The documentary "Lost in La Mancha" (2002) showed you battling executives, sickly actors, and having general bad luck while ultimately failing to get your passion project made. Will you ever be able to finish "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote"?

Gilliam: We're getting very close to getting the rights to "Quixote" back.

MTV: And Johnny Depp will still star in it?

Gilliam: Well, I'm not sure if I want to work with him — he's just too big a star now. I'd rather work with a young unknown. [He laughs.] No, that will be the first phone call I make when I get the script back in my hands ... then, when he's free, we go because he's on board.

There be Americans
Americana Is Over
Date : October, 7, 2006

Miceage.com has a spectacular scoop: Disneyland’s Burbank braintrust is planning to close Tom Sawyer’s Island and turn it into another Pirates of the Caribbean-themed attraction.

Some of the reasons given are the success of the movies, the arrival of a Pirates threequel in May and the fact that their research shows that kids know Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow and they’ve never heard of Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Betsy Thatcher.

That’s a shame, isn't it?

Disneyland is Americana. The place has its ephemera and catches onto passing fads, but it’s the traditional, timeless attractions, from the Barbershop Quartets to the Mark Twain riverboat-- to underappreciated Tom Sawyer's Island-- that keep the place above all others.

In this case, trading literature for pop culture (especially when a youth classic is weighed against a movie series that declines in quality and imagination with each installment) is a mistake that will only lead the park down the EuroDisney slide.

Besides, the boys in Burbank already have a dumping ground for bright ideas, just past the ticket booths in what used to be the parking lot and is now called California Adventure. Movie-themed and Pixar-related attractions are the highlights of the pop flop.

Find a place for the ancillary Pirates there.

We wish Hollywood Thoughts would come out hibernation and weigh in on this one.

Johnny Depp is an advocate of children and children’s causes. His unwavering dedication to the memory of a 10-year-old boy is a sign of his devotion to all children. Dustin Meraz, a young child diagnosed with inoperable cancer, was an aspiring actor.  Before passing, Meraz shared his hope that kids like him would honor adults for their efforts in finding cures and saving lives, reminding his friends and family to cherish each moment in life with his “Life is a Gift – Have Fun” bracelets.

Meraz’ bracelets were brought to the attention of Melissa Gilbert, Children's Hospice Coalition Board President and former President of the Screen Actor’s Guild, who ultimately passed one onto Johnny Depp.  For more information on the bracelet, click here.

News from Sam Rubin that Disneyland Park is all abuzz about a possible revamping of Tom Swayer's Island into something related to Pirates 3 - and this isn't the first time I've heard this story.  We'll know more soon, because if they are going to do this, they will have to start very soon in order to have it done by May 25, 2007.

From Daniel:
In anticipation of the December 5th DVD release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Disney created this interactive site, Dead Man’s Mail  - www.DeadMansMail.com

At Dead Man’s Mail you can send a personalized Pirates of the Caribbean email to your friends, or also send a pre-recorded quote from Jack Sparrow. It’s pretty cool.

It seems Paul Ford (Sondheim expert) is flew to LA last weekend to be the pianist during Johnny's vocal training for Sweeney Todd. They are also auditioning the female leads, among them Bernadette Peters.

In the recent episode- "Make Love, Not Warcraft,"  the "villian" (if he could even be called that) has a cup of some sort with our very own Jack Sparrow on it!

Quixote Resurrected
Gilliam, Depp plot return to La Mancha.
by IGN Staff

October 4, 2006 - Director Terry Gilliam is beloved by genre fans for films like Brazil, 12 Monkeys, and Time Bandits, but his pictures are often - and famously - plagued by production troubles. Never was that more true than with his doomed The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, the film that notoriously never came to be but the troubled and incomplete production of which was portrayed in the popular 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha. Now, however, Gilliam says that he is on the verge of resurrecting the long thought dead project.

"We're in the final stages of getting the rights to Quixote back," the director told IGN earlier today. "I mean, I've been hearing this for the past six months, and I'm getting a bit impatient. But when we get that back, that would be the thing I would just dive in [on]. First thing I would do is make one phone call: 'Johnny, when are you available?' And that would dictate when I do it."

The Johnny in question is, of course, Johnny Depp, the planned star of the first version of Quixote. Gilliam says that the actor is still onboard the film. "He's on, he's on," the director said, before adding with a laugh, "He's the man… I hope he's still my best friend!"

As for how much of the original version of Quixote can be used for this new production, the helmer believes that there's little chance of actual footage being recycled from that shoot.

"We have to start anew," Gilliam confirmed. "We have to throw it all away. We do have things like costumes stored away. There's some work that's been done, but everything we shot is gone. It's such a dangerous thing, because the documentary was so good and people have got so many images in their own head of what the film will be like. Their imagination may be better than what I produce, so who knows."

Clooney hails Owen and Depp
George Clooney hailed English actor Clive Owen as the biggest thing to hit Hollywood in years.

The “Syriana” star is frequently impressed by Owen's passionate performances on the big screen, as well as film muscular Johnny Depp, as Femelefirst notes.

"Clive is the big find in the past two or three years. I think he's a movie star. He's, like, a man - there's sexuality and a masculinity that I think is really interesting”, said Clooney about Owen.

"Johnny just keeps doing really good stuff. He's just a really, really smart and good actor", revealed the Hollywood famous actor of Depp.

Note from Kazren: This is based on an article in a French paper.  Since they are and have been living in Los Angeles for over a year, and Johnny is slated to be filming POTC3 into November, take this story with a large grain of salt.  I have covered the children's faces, since Johnny does not want their pictures published.
