Deep film breaks Disney DVD record

Pirates Of The Caribbean is Disney's fastest selling DVD ever in the UK.

Nearly 1.5 million copies of Dead Man's Chest sold in a single week, figures from the British Video Association show.

The Johnny Depp film became the fastest selling DVD ever at Sainsbury's within 48 hours of going on sale on November 20.

Disney said high demand meant it had been forced to order in a million extra copies for the UK.

The company's marketing director Brian Winsor said: "With the film doing so well at the box office we always hoped the DVD would prove popular. It seems as though the appeal of Jack Sparrow and his shipmates goes on."

Disney expects the DVD to sell up to three million copies by the end of the year if demand continues at the current level.

The British Video Association is an industry body which tracks the sales of film releases across all major retailers.

Disney did not release the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film on video.

Its sales figures are its highest for DVD but do not eclipse the combined video and DVD sales of some previous blockbuster movies, a spokesman said.

There is no information available about what the event will include, what the pricing will be, or when tickets will go on sale. However, Olszewski Studios has been commissioned to create some merchandise pieces for the event.

So, keep an eye on DisneyGallery.com for more information.

Disney offers club 'grand a goal'

The Robins will take the name of Johnny's Depp's character
Cheltenham Town Football Club's cash difficulties could be eased slightly with a one-off sponsorship deal offered by Disney.

The team launching the new Pirates of the Caribbean II DVD is to give The Robins an undisclosed four-figure sum.  As an added incentive, the club will get "a grand a goal" at Tuesday's FA Cup clash against Scunthorpe.  During the game, The Robins will become The Sparrows in honour of the film's main character, Captain Jack Sparrow.  It is believed to be entertainment group's first football sponsorship.

Incentive

Ryan Virgo from Disney said: "We don't want to put too much pressure on the lads, but we're hoping they will end up costing us a few thousand pounds on the night.  "We've never carried out any kind of football sponsorship previously, but when we heard about Cheltenham's search for a striker we felt it was right."  The team will also be offered another £1,000 for every save against Scunthorpe.

Cheltenham Town assistant manager Keith Downing added: "We've had a tough season and a win against Scunthorpe will certainly give us a massive lift.  "The support from The Pirates of the Caribbean is fantastic - not that we needed any further incentive for getting a result on Tuesday."

Target Backs Off in Online Movies Feud
By GARY GENTILE

LOS ANGELES -- Discount retailer Target backed off plans to pull in-store promotions of products from Walt Disney after Disney threatened not to ship DVDs of hit movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," a person familiar with the situation said Friday.

The companies are at odds over The Walt Disney Co.'s decision to sell movies online through Apple Computer Co.'s iTunes store for less than it charges Target and other retailers.

The dispute is part of a feud between a number of major retailers and Hollywood studios over online movie sales.

Target Corp. stores had removed signs promoting the DVD of the Disney-Pixar animated film "Cars" and other Disney products, according to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak for either company.

The two sides are discussing their differences after resolving the standoff, the person said.

"Gonzo" is a 'limited edition'boxed book set (See it here) starting at $300.  It is written by " Hunter S. Thompson, Johnny Depp (Foreword), Steve Crist (Editor)
Gone Gonzo

Chronicling Hunter’s Escapades

Hunter Thompson was an inventive guy, and the most remarkable of all his inventions was Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, the character he played in life. Just because it was a role did not mean it was fake. The more he played and perfected it, the more real it became. But every now and then, when the friends in his kitchen in Woody Creek, Colorado, stopped goading him to be more gonzo, you could talk to him in a softer way and he would, for a moment, become earnest and appear (yes, really) even innocent.

Now comes Gonzo (Ammo), a book that gives a soulful glimpse of a younger Hunter Thompson looking beautiful and, despite his best efforts and evil glints, still exuding a few intimations of innocence. It’s a luxuriously crafted visual biography, published as a $300 limited edition with an introduction by Johnny Depp, that is filled with pictures by and of the good doctor, typescripts edited with his distinctive scrawl, mementos, and memento mori.

One night he came to Time magazine, with Depp in tow, to hand-deliver a story he had written. He had an ability to use commas so deftly that his pieces begged to be read aloud, so Depp read it for a small audience while Thompson consumed substances and played air drums to the rhythm of his prose. It turned into a little celebration, weird but sweetly charming. Depp and Thompson have done just the same with this book, a celebration of a weird, sweetly charming life.

HE'S HOLY ROWLING
Vicar's terrifying kids' books have knocked Harry Potter author off best-seller charts
By Lisa Adams
A VICAR has struck fear into the hearts of millions of youngsters across the world. The Rev Graham Taylor has made a fortune out of writing scary children's books which have been translated into 46 languages and have even knocked JK Rowling off the New York Times best-seller list.

Hollywood movie moguls snapped up the rights to his terrifying story Shadowmancer for a cool £2.5million after it stayed at No.1 in the British book charts for 15 weeks.

Now Universal Pictures are making the black magic blockbuster and have lined up heart-throb Johnny Depp to play the lead.

Graham, 48, said: "The scripts are with Johnny right now. We're hoping he'll love the story and really want to be a part of it."

Depp would play Obadiah Demurral, a wicked sorcerer who vows to take over the world in the fantasy movie, due to start shooting next year.

His fearsome character has dark powers which allow him to communicate with the dead.

The idea for the evil Demurral took shape in Graham's home at Cloughton, near Scarborough, Yorkshire.

"My study overlooked a graveyard," he said. "So typing the book in the middle of the night surrounded by graves, you couldn't fail to be scared. Shadowmancer was my baby and I sweated blood over that book.

"I pictured Obadiah as a tall, thin man with long grey hair and a very rugged, handsome appearance. He was someone who looked holy on the outside, but was corrupted on the inside by money and power."

But all that hard work was definitely worth it. The vicar, who writes under the name of GP Taylor, has signed a nine-book deal with publishing giant Faber.

And the father of three claims his bad guys are scarier than any you'd find in Hogwarts.

"My villain, if he had got to grips with Harry Potter, would have beaten him," he said.

Graham, who recently quit his parish because of a heart condition, is keen for Michael Caine to play an angel in Shadowmancer.

"He's a force for good, but a cranky angel," said Taylor. "We need someone who is quirky, a little different and with an excellent comic edge."

Sean Bean has been approached to play the mysterious smuggler Jacob Crane, who helps thwart the sorcerer's evil plans.

Johnny Depp plunders People's Choice nominations

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Pirates of the Caribbean" star
Johnny Depp, Hollywood's top-grossing leading man this year, led the field of People's Choice Award contenders announced on Tuesday as he snatched up three nominations.

Depp, the flamboyant buccaneer Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," was nominated as favorite male movie star, along with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, and clinched a separate bid as best male action star, competing in that category with Samuel L. Jackson and
Jet Li.

Depp, 43, voted favorite male star last year, shared a third nomination with "Pirates" co-star Keira Knightley in the category for favorite on-screen match-up.

"Dead Man's Chest" ranks as the highest-grossing film of 2006, raking in nearly $422 million domestically and more than $1 billion worldwide in theatrical ticket sales.

The film was a sequel to 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," which earned Depp his first Oscar nomination for his Jack Sparrow performance, one of the signature roles of his career.

Unlike the
Oscars and other entertainment awards in which nominees and winners are chosen by industry peers, the People's Choice Awards are determined by the public. In previous years, polling for the awards was conducted by the Gallup Organization.

This year and last, Web-based market research group Knowledge Networks recruited a sample of "pop culture-involved" men and women to nominate their favorites from pre-selected candidates in various categories.

The top three selections for each category became nominees, and the winners will be chosen by a majority of online votes cast at the Web site www.pcavote.com. The 33rd Annual People's Choice Awards will be presented on January 9 in a nationally televised ceremony.
