This past weekend, ComingSoon.net joined a group of journalists down in the Bahamas to talk to director Tim Burton and the stars of his adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They told us a bit about some of their upcoming projects.

The reason interviews took place on the tropical island was because Burton's Willy Wonka, Johnny Depp, was staying down there while filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the sequel to the 2003 hit Disney film, which will film back-to-back with the third part of the trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Ironically, they had just started their hiatus on the film a bit earlier than expected, because some of the Grand Bahamas sets weren't ready yet, while Kevin McNally, one of the main actors, got a nasty ear infection which kept him from flying down there.

When asked whether Keith Richards would still be playing Jack Sparrow's father, Depp wasn't definite. "It looks like it's going to happen, but I don't know when," he responded. "It's all going to depend on where we are and where he is, because he has a little thing called the Rolling Stones tour to do."

Although the first movie was a huge hit, Depp told us that he didn't think it was strange returning for the sequel that had a lot of high expectations. "What's weird is that we didn't know quite what to expect before we went back into 'Pirates 2'," he said. "A lot of things have happened with Orlando and Keira doing big movies all over the map, but honestly, we stepped onto the set for the first day, and for me, jumping back into the skin of Captain Jack, it felt like we only had a week off from the first one, and it's been a really great time. I think it's going to be good. I hope. I'll knock wood again."

Depp also mentioned that when growing up, he dreamed of being a rock and roll guitar player and thought that a movie based on the story of Syd Barrett, original frontman for Pink Floyd, would be a great idea. (This writer agrees!)

Depp's young co-star Freddie Highmore, who brought audiences to tears when they worked together on last year's Finding Neverland, plays Charlie in Burton's film. Highmore had just finished working with French director Luc Besson on Arthur and the Minimoys about a boy who has to save his grandmother's house, and will follow that up in September by starring in the second movie from director Francis Lawrence (Constantine), an adaptation of Philip Ardagh's fantasy novel "A House Called Awful End" (simplified to just Awful End). Highmore didn't want to say too much about the project, except one can safely assume he plays the main character, an 11-year-old boy who is put into an orphanage when his parents become ill.

Of course, Burton himself is busy finishing up The Corpse Bride, a stop motion animated film in the vein of The Nightmare Before Christmas Depp and Burton's wife Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays Charlie's mother in Chocolate Factory, provided voices for the characters. "It was good because we could only work with the kids so much during the day," Burton told us. "Sometimes, we'd work during the day and then we'd go to the sound booth and do some voice work on that. It was kind of a chaotic situation, but I'm excited about that one. Since the Corpse Bride is slower, I can have a bit more of an objective feel for it."

"Just as we were about to start 'Charlie', Tim came to me and said that he had this other thing he was thinking of doing," Depp continued. "I read the script and thought that it was amazing, but I had no idea that he was going to be doing them simultaneously. He was literally leaving the set of 'Charlie' and going into the 'Corpse Bride' recording and animation with this incredible energy he has. For me, I would leave the stage playing Wonka, and then suddenly, I would have to find this other character Victor on the walk to the studio. Anything with Tim is always just a blast."

John August, who wrote the screenplay both for "Charlie" and Burton's last film Big Fish, also had written a script based on Edgar Rice Burrough's "Tarzan," which he hopes will get made someday. He didn't have a personal choice on who to play the part, but he said that once they find a director, they'll start looking for an actor to take on the role made famous on film by Johnny Weissmuller, Gordon Scott and Christopher Lambert. "A lesson learned from Charlie was that having an amazing director and an amazing actor on board really gets the ball rolling," he told us. "We have a good script and now we need all those other elements, so I don't know if it's going to happen." In the meantime, August is working with Jerry Bruckheimer's company to produce a big screen adaptation of the popular video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which will be written by the game's creator Jordan Mechner. "It's the first project I've been on board which I haven't written," he said. "It's going to be one of those insanely expensive Pirates of the Caribbean scale movies."

Depp Did Double Burton Duty

Johnny Depp, who stars in director Tim Burton's upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, told SCI FI Wire that he actually did double duty with Burton in London during filming. While shooting Charlie, based on Roald Dahl's beloved children's book, Depp was also voicing the character of Victor in Burton's stop-motion animated movie Corpse Bride.

"Yeah, it was very interesting," Depp said in a news conference in Nassau, Bahamas, over the weekend, where he is currently shooting the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel films. "We were just about to start [Charlie], and Tim came to me and said, 'You know, I've got this other thing that I'm thinking about doing. This stop-motion thing. And, you know, I'd like to give you the script and take a look and tell me what you think.' [I said,] 'Sure.' So I read the script [and] felt, 'God, it was amazing. It's amazing. It's brilliant.' But I had no idea he was going to be doing them simultaneously. I mean, he was literally leaving the set of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and going into the Corpse Bride ... recordings and animation [sessions]. ... It was an incredible energy he has."

For his part, Depp would record his voice part for Corpse during breaks from Charlie, in which he plays reclusive candy mogul Willy Wonka. "For me, it was like, you know, going from [assumes Willy Wonka voice] playing Willy Wonka, and then, suddenly, [taking on Victor's wispy English accent] you know, going in and deciding to be Victor," he said. "It was a really strange thing. Because I would literally leave the stage playing Wonka and then ... have to find this other character on the walk to the studio. Anything with Tim is always just a blast, you know? Always."

But Depp said that he loves working with Burton, with whom he has previously made Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and Ed Wood. "I know that I respect him so much and love him so much as a filmmaker," Depp said. "I would do anything he wanted. ... The thing I most enjoy about our relationship, aside from our friendship, is the amount of trust, you know? And the amount of trust that goes into that process, that collaborative process. Because one minute we're talking very, very deeply about Captain Kangaroo, and the next minute we're doing impersonations of, you know, Sammy Davis Jr. and Charles Nelson Reilly and you know. So it can go anywhere, you know?"

Depp added that the two also share a kind of offbeat sensibility. "One of the things I think Tim and I share is a kind of fascination with people, with human beings, you know?" he said. "The human animal. And I think we share also the idea, you know, that most people in life—most people, especially the ones that are considered, you know, super normal—if you really take a step back and observe them, watch them a bit, you'll realize that they're actually completely out of their mind, you know? Most people are really nuts. And that's fascinating to watch, you know? And I think Tim feels the same way [chuckles]." Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opens July 15.

DEPP WORRIED ABOUT KIDS' TAKE ON WONKA

JOHNNY DEPP is terrified about taking his kids JACK and ROSE to see his CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY remake because they're such huge fans of the original movie.  The actor fears his children will be his "harshest critics" when they check out the new movie.

He says, "My kids might just come out of the thing and go, 'You completely missed it dad.'

"When they came out on set the first time to visit me and I was all decked in the (WILLY) WONKA gear, it was like, 'I know that's dad, but he looks real weird. They stared at me for like two or three minutes."

JOHNNY DEPP: You too, honey! Don't ever lose the weirdness. Swashbuckling comedies, romantic biopics, and cult-kiddie-flick remakes are fine, but now that you're getting Oscar nominations, you need to start worrying—a lot. You're getting a bit too lovable, too streamlined, and overly accepted (though you seem to have a healthy, bemused attitude at those awards shows). Your bizarreness has become too safe for mankind. Scare people again. Make us scream. Don't wash your hair anymore. Slap J.Lo.

Johnny's Weird, Wild 'Wonka'

From a drunken pirate and a gonzo journalist to a gypsy and a man with scissor-hands, JOHNNY DEPP's played 'em all. Now, the Oscar®-nominated actor returns to the big screen to play the one and only Willy Wonka in director TIM BURTON's all-new interpretation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in theaters July 15!

"My kids haven't seen the film yet, but they're very excited to see it," Johnny tells ET. "I remember when they first came to visit me on the set, the first time they saw me all decked out as Wonka, they stared at me for about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. They could recognize elements of their dad but they couldn't quite get it."

In 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' Johnny's 'Finding Neverland' star FREDDIE HIGHMORE plays Charlie Bucket, a young boy from a poor family living in the shadow of Willy Wonka's super-secret, magical Chocolate Factory. When Wonka launches a contest to choose an heir to his candy empire, Charlie wins one of five coveted golden tickets to tour the legendary factory that no one has seen in 15 years. The story is based on author ROALD DAHL's classic children's tale.

"There's no comparison," Johnny says about this movie and the 1971 film 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.' "I think it's a completely different animal. I think that film was great, growing up it was ingrained into my memory -- especially [GENE] WILDER's version of Wonka, [it] is a beautiful performance -- but I think this is a very, very different thing. We did our best to be as faithful to Roald Dahl's book."

In an effort to stay true to the spirit of the original story, the new production went to great lengths to re-create the factory with real candy. All of the lollipops on the trees, the giant pink sugar canes and the red-and-white swirls of the sweeping tree are real. Nestlé's made 1,850 candy bars especially for the film, which were stored in a special walk-in trailer that was kept at a certain humidity to preserve the chocolate. Approximately 245,000 gallons of fake chocolate was used to create Wonka's chocolate river and waterfall, and 40 squirrels were actually trained for 19 weeks to sit on stools while they opened nut shells and dropped the nuts onto a conveyor belt!

"When I walked on to the chocolate set where the chocolate river and waterfall were," Johnny says, "it was like walking into something historic."

Oh Johnny! update from Kazren:

I've been talking to my hosting provider and we will be setting up a Virtual Server for Oh Johnny! over the next 2-3 days.  In plain English this means I'll have a very large space and more bandwidth available, so I may be able to have a limited number of music videos up at any one time.

I am attempting to contact all the music video creators I have email addresses for and will set up a page for links to their music if Oh Johnny! cannot actually host them.

Already several people have donated money to help with the huge excessive bandwidth charges I got this morning, and I will be emailing each one of them individually to express my gratitude.   I want to thank all of you for supporting Oh Johnny!  A day doesn't go by without someone sending me a kind email letting me know they enjoy the site.  That's why I created it, to share my love of Johnny with the rest of you.  By occupation I am a hospice nurse, but my full-time hobby is running this website.

Those of us who have found a little bit of "Neverland" in being Johnny Depp's fans all seem to have a deep-seated sense of kindness and caring.  This is no surprise to me.

Thank you again,
Kazren

Johnny Depp, Hollywood's hottest eccentric, meets his match playing Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.' How sweet is that?
By Sean Smith
Newsweek

July 4 issue - Playing Willy Wonka is not for the timid. It requires courage, imagination and flawless fashion sense. "I like these heels," Johnny Depp says, pulling up his pant cuff to reveal a sleek boot emblazoned with a swirly W. "I wanted Wonka to be this long, string-beany kind of figure, and give him these unbelievable cha-cha heels." It's late September, on a soundstage outside London, and Depp is taking a break in the inventing room of Wonka's factory. Nearby, director Tim Burton sets up for the scene in which gum-smacking Violet Beauregarde will meet a violet end. "This is our fourth movie together," Depp says. "I'm so honored that he asked me to play Wonka. I just hope I'm in the right arena here. My first concern is always, 'Jesus, I don't want to let Tim down'." Or the rest of the world, for that matter.
...
Now all Team Charlie needed was a star. Depp had met Liccy Dahl years earlier at a fund-raising dinner held at the country home of British Prime Minister Tony Blair. (Depp had been invited at the last minute by a Warner Bros. executive. "We twisted some arms to get his security check done in two days," says Liccy. "Actually, I wasn't certain they would let him in. He had a slight reputation, you know.") Liccy had also been intrigued by the thought of casting Daniel Day-Lewis or Kevin Spacey. But Depp had a long history with Burton and, after years of being a critical darling but a box-office deadbeat, had suddenly become bankable after "Pirates of the Caribbean." "It was the first time I didn't have to talk a studio into him," Burton says. "It was like he'd landed on the planet for the first time! He's been doing f—-ing great work for years, but... whatever. I guess it's all box office for them." To offer Depp the part, Burton invited him to dinner without telling him why. "I think I let him finish half a sentence," Depp says, laughing, "and I just went, 'I'm in. I'm there.' I hadn't even seen a script."

Now for the tricky part: how was Depp going to play Wonka? No matter what one thinks of the 1971 film, Wilder played the candy man with an avuncular weirdness and a real warmth. Depp, never one to imitate, had to take a different path. First, he and Burton chose to give Wonka a backstory, making him the son of a dentist, who—because he never got to eat sweets—became estranged from his father and obsessed with candy. Over the years, Wonka has become not just reclusive, but almost autistic in his inability to connect with others. "He's not a father figure—he's a mess," Burton says. "There are lots of people who are geniuses in one area, but have complete deficiencies in other areas of their lives."

To build the character, Depp began thinking about the kind of folks who host game shows and children's TV programs. "Not like Captain Kangaroo, but like that guy on the local cable station in Podunk, Idaho," Depp says. "Wonka had sheltered himself from the outside world, and television would have been a good friend to him." Depp also decided to make Wonka a perfectionist and a germ-a-phobe. As for his look, that flawless pale skin, perfect pageboy and slightly feminine air have had some people wondering whether Depp found inspiration in Michael Jackson. "That never crossed my mind," he says. "I never thought about it once, honestly. But it's interesting, people's perceptions."

The trailers for "Charlie" have already given audiences a sense that Depp's Wonka may be a love-it-or-hate-it proposition. That should please Depp, an actor who's beloved precisely because he's a sworn enemy of the obvious and expected (interview). But will audiences be able to warm to a character who, by design, doesn't really warm to anyone? "I remember getting notes on the script that said, 'We have to find a connection between Charlie and Willy Wonka'," Burton says. "No, that'sthe whole point. Willy Wonka doesn't like children or parents—or people." He laughs. "His journey is from disconnection to connection."

Warner Bros. is betting about $150 million that that journey will connect with families. There's no doubt that the movie's got plenty of eye candy to keep everyone entertained—the first 30 minutes of the film alone are as gorgeous, pointedly funny and transporting as anything Burton's directed. Liccy Dahl is thrilled with the film and says her late husband "would have adored it." She's happy with Depp's performance, too, although she admits she doesn't quite understand the actor's sex appeal. "Women just adore him, don't they?" she says. "I have to be honest, I think he's a little too pretty. Terribly nice, but he's no Robert Mitchum."

Depp Impact
Johnny Depp can do no wrong right now.

Orlando Bloom has nothing but praise for his Pirates of the Caribbean co-star, rocker Ozzy Osbourne wants him to play the Black Sabbath frontman when the movie gets made and the ultimate Power List now regards him as one of the most influential actors in Hollywood, alongside the likes of Tom Cruise and Will Smith.

Even though he's been playing to the cameras for over 20 years, the man of the moment is Johnny Depp and he's having the last laugh.  Once saddled with the reputation as an outsider with a taste for the obscure, he is now the toast of Tinseltown.  The reinvention of Johnny Depp over the years has been as entertaining as the films he starred in.  As well as acting out weird and wonderful parts, he's gone from rocker to hellraiser to devoted dad.

Yes, it's hard to keep up with this Kentucky-born chameleon, but we'll give it a try. Here's a look at the many changing faces of one of the world's most intriguing actors:

Raging Bull
Depp's hellraising headlines followed him wherever he put a hobnailed boot wrong.  One minute he was arresting for paparazzi bashing, the next he was done for hotel trashing, not to mention supermodel flings (Kate Moss) and bourbon-fuelled antics to keep the newspapers full to the brim.

After a stint in a rock band, it went a bit wrong for him when he was swallowed up by a bed in A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984.  His luck did pick up, however, in 1990 when director Tim Burton cast him as Edward Scissorhands - the artificial man whose fingers did the talking whenever he got within an inch of a hedge.

The fairytale film was a hit and Depp's career was born.

The Prince of Darkness
With no desire to do mainstream movies like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, Depp buckled down and pounced on quirkier roles to stretch his talents.  Instead of choosing gun-toting blockbusters, he discovered a kindred spirit in director Tim Burton, who is also drawn to dark, Gothic tales and often misunderstood outcast characters.

JD and TB's famous five films made together are Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride.

Sweet Like Chocolate
Falling for French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis transformed Depp once again.  Paradis smoothed the rough edges in his life and they set up home together - a first for Depp after years flitting from penthouse to penthouse in hotel chains across the world.  The liaison produced two children (Jack and Lily) and Depp says playing dad has been his best and most challenging role to date.

Family life has been reflected in his work. He signed up for Neverland to play Peter Pan author JM Barrie opposite Kate Winslet and was Oscar-nominated for Best Actor at this year's awards.  The big kid in him jumped at the chance to take part in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - his golden ticket to family-friendly entertainment.

Jack The Lad
While his peers are flossing and bleaching their Hollywood smiles, Depp goes for a mouthful of gold caps.  The result is Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean - a swashbuckling character who earned him his first Oscar nom.  Despite Disney bigwigs getting jittery over what Depp would do next (their first shock being when he rocked up on set looking not unlike Keith Richards worse for wear), they realised the latest reinvention of Johnny Depp was his best yet.

Raking in millions, Depp's sword hasn't touched the ground and he's starring in POTC: Dead Man's Chest and POTC 3.  Even flushed with success over the last year or two, Depp is determined to keep outside Hollywood's comfort zone.  Rest assured he won't sell out and stay the same for long - his next reinvention is waiting in the wings. Critics declare that Johnny's got his groove back. Fans will tell you he never lost it.

I know Shore from our days working together at Christie’s, so I hollered out “Hey Jon” directed towards Shore, then BOTH Depp and Shore replied “Hey!” back to me! Depp was wearing jeans and had on glasses. He’s not particularly tall.

A 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' Exclusive!

Storyteller ROALD DAHL's classic children's tale, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is returning to the big screen this summer in an all-new interpretation from director TIM BURTON -- starring JOHNNY DEPP as Willy Wonka!

"To be chosen to play Willy Wonka in the first place is a great honor," Depp says.

The Oscar®-nominated actor describes the famous factory. "The factory is like walking through Wonka's brain," he says. "Complicated, strange, fun, disturbing, outrageous."

In 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' in theaters July 15, 'Finding Neverland' star FREDDIE HIGHMORE plays Charlie Bucket, a young boy from a poor family living in the shadow of Willy Wonka's super-secret, magical Chocolate Factory. When Wonka launches a contest to choose an heir to his candy empire, Charlie wins one of five coveted golden tickets to tour the legendary factory that no one has seen in 15 years.

"Charlie is a very thoughtful boy," Highmore reveals. "He puts family first."

Or, as Willy Wonka would describe him: "[He's] kind of an angel ... you feel like you've met some kind of saint."

Highmore also has praise for his co-star. "He's a really fantastic guy," he says of Depp.

Back when Johnny was promoting 'Finding Neverland,' he told ET he's happy to do films "that are pretty accessible to my kids right now," and only had raves for his young co-star, Freddie, who plays one of KATE WINSLET's boys in that movie. In fact, he recommended Freddie to director Burton to cast him in the new update of 'Chocolate Factory.'

"He's a magic kid," said Johnny. "Freddie's all magic, all purity, all honesty. He is as good a pal as any I've got. He's someone I consider a great friend, and beyond that, a great actor. He's just a really good human being."

Back in 1971, GENE WILDER was the first actor to portray Willy Wonka on the big screen in 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,' which is considered a modern classic.

ScratchTheDragon reports that hostess is coming out with a Willy Wonka cupcake on June 27th.  How sweet!

Johnny Depp in Kerala?
Tony Tharakan | June 21, 2005

If director Ashvin Kumar has his way, Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp could soon serenade an Indian actress in the backwaters of Kerala.  Fresh after the worldwide acclaim for the Oscar-nominated Little Terrorist, Kumar plans to rope in his favourite actor Depp for a romantic comedy shot in God's Own Country.

"I am trying to get Johnny Depp to act in a movie set in Kerala," Kumar told PTI.  The 30-something director hit the headlines earlier this year when his 15-minute movie Little Terrorist -- based on the real-life incident of a Pakistani boy straying into Indian territory -- was nominated for an Oscar in the Live Action Short Films category.

Starting November, the film will be shot in the Indian jungles on the foothills of the Himalayas. The full-length feature will focus on the present-day ecological crisis and is aimed primarily at the international box office.

(Note from Kazren: Johnny will still be filming POTC in November, not to mention the other films hie's already signed for, so this is probably only wishful thinking on Kumar's behalf)

NICOLE Kidman thinks she might be getting a reputation as the star who enjoys strange movies. But she's in good company.  "I got a message from Johnny Depp which said we should definitely do a movie together because our tastes are so weird," the Aussie actor said in LA recently. "I would like to work with him."

And what a duo they would make. Both have displayed a penchant for the unpredictable, veering between blockbusters and smaller art-house fare, always searching for personally rewarding roles.  As if to illustrate the point, she is promoting her next release, a "light and fluffy" big-screen version of Bewitched, on a break from her newest project, Fur, a "small and dark" movie filming in New York.  Of Fur, in which she plays suicidal photographer Diane Arbus, Kidman said with a laugh: "My agent said, 'This is the weirdest script I have ever seen – of course Nicole is going to want to do it'."

With few exceptions, Kidman's movies in recent years have been serious affairs, from her Oscar-winning turn as doomed writer Virginia Woolf in The Hours, through her hunted portrayal of Grace in Lars Von Trier's bizarre Dogville and her riveting Anna in the controversial Birth.  It's no coincidence that these roles coincided with a turbulent period in Kidman's own life, following the split from her megastar husband of 10 years, Tom Cruise, and dealing with a miscarriage, stalkers and injuries.

"There is absolutely a thread between the work you choose to do and what's happening in your life," she said.  "I don't even think in terms of happy and unhappy – I suppose it's more in terms of examining yourself and examining humanity and ideas."

True to form of expecting the unexpected, Bewitched is a complete change of pace for Kidman – a feel-good romantic comedy in which she stars alongside Elf and Anchorman star Will Ferrell, Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine.  Directed by Norah Ephron, who also wrote When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle, Bewitched is not a slavish remake of the beloved '60s TV show. It is a film about making a remake, full of sly digs at Hollywood stereotypes.  Kidman, who looks like original star Elizabeth Montgomery, helped get the project off the ground. But all her acting prowess and accolades would have come to nothing had she not been able to master the famous Samantha nose twitch.

"I actually learned the twitch in Australia when I came back on holiday in between making The Interpreter and Bewitched," she said. "I watched all the re-runs and put it in slow motion. She does it with her lip a little bit – that's the key."

Fantasy flicks to fire up summer
By Tom Long  Gannett News Service
(excerpt)
5. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (July 15) - No major battles here (or at least there weren't any in the first "Willy Wonka" movie). Just Oompa Loompas, spoiled kids, tons of candy and enough offbeat settings to let director Tim ("Edward Scissorhands," "Batman," "Big Fish") Burton's ample visual imagination run wild. It shouldn't hurt that he has Johnny Depp, the most colorful actor of his generation, along as Willy Wonka. But another child actor figures heavily in the potential success of this fantasy, and that would be young Freddie Highmore, Depp's astounding co-star in "Finding Neverland."

Celeb Rich List Unveiled
Power. Brad Pitt has it - but Johnny Depp has more. David Beckham has it too - but not as much as the Desperate Housewives.

This, according to a new poll of the world's most powerful 100 celebrities.

The survey was carried out by respected US business magazine Forbes, who calculated the earnings, internet presence, press clippings, magazine cover stories and mentions on TV and radio of each celebrity.

The survey found that chat show host Oprah Winfrey is the world's most powerful celebrity, followed by ace golfer Tiger Woods and actor-turned director Mel Gibson, who was last year's most powerful person.

Sir Elton John is the highest-ranking Briton on the list, in ninth place, with an estimated paycheck in the past 12 months of $44m (£25m).

The singer beats Hollywood star Tom Cruise - whose relationship with Batman Begins star Katie Holmes has put him back in the limelight.

Cruise is in tenth place, with earnings of $31m (£17.7m), followed by Brad Pitt, with $25m (£14.2m).

Oprah, whose talk show is watched by 30 million viewers each week in the US alone, and was third place last year, has estimated earnings of $225m (£128m).

David Beckham has fallen four places from 22 to 26 - his earnings last year are estimated to be $32.5m (£18m).

The list proves that, despite the last screening of Friends, Jennifer Aniston is still popular - she came 37th - but co-stars Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow, both of whom were on the 2004 list, are nowhere to be seen.

Instead, they've been replaced by a new batch of A-listers.

Desperate Housewives stars Teri Hatcher and Marcia Cross are new to the list, while others to make the cut include Paris Hilton, Jessica and Ashlee Simpson and Hollywood's best-known twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

But it's not such good news for some of Tinseltown's most famous faces.

Tom Hanks and Jim Carrey may be among the highest-paid stars in the business but that hasn't been enough to get them into this year.

But J-Lo's there - she comes 24th place, Julia Roberts makes 39th place, while Nicole Kidman is number 45.

Lindsay Lohan comes 52nd, Sandra Bullock 65th, Cameron Diaz is 66th, and supermodel Kate Moss comes 93rd.

Winner to watch 'Willy Wonka' in Hollywood

By Kelley Gorman

Nathan Jobe of Fergus Falls has the proverbial golden ticket that will allow him to see Willy Wonka, not at the chocolate factory, but in the Grauman's Chinese Theatre of Hollywood.

Jobe came across a sweepstakes entrance post card in a Nickelodeon magazine. He was finished with his daily job of cleaning the Washington Avenue Dental office and waiting for his mom to pick him up when he saw an ad offering the chance to see the premiere of a Warner Brothers film.

"He gave me this post card and wanted a stamp to send it," said Tammy Jobe, Nathan's mom. "I almost threw it away but for some reason I felt I should send it."

She said it was the best 37 cents she ever invested. The post card, which was sent last May, was chosen from thousands of entrants.

As the winner of the "Warner Bros. Coming Attractions Sweepstakes", Nathan is taking his brother, Kris, and his parents on a three-day, two-night stay at the Le Parc Suites Hotel in West Hollywood. They will be at the premiere of the movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," where the film's star, Johnny Depp, will be in attendance. They may even be able to attend the post premiere party, but are unsure at this point.

The Jobe family, which has never been to Hollywood, let alone California, will put in some of their own funds to stretch the trip to a ten day family vacation. They will try to visit Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Rodeo Drive and already have tickets to see a live episode of "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

The family has known about winning since October, but did not tell anyone until two weeks ago.

"I guess it just didn't feel real," said Tammy. "We wanted to make sure it was actually going to happen before we told everyone."

When asked if he felt like the family was taking a vacation on his bill, Nathan jokingly said "pretty much."

Although he didn't say much about the trip, when probed he shared, "I'm just excited to meet famous people, take a bunch of pictures and get autographs."

Pretty cool for someone headed to one of the biggest premieres of the summer. For all the doubters out there that large corporations actually follow through with their advertised prizes, Nathan is living proof.

As his mother said, "He's the lucky one in the family".

John Waters fans have little modesty at DVD signings

The DVD of his(John Waters) 1990 Johnny Depp starrer "Cry-Baby" is due July 12. He tells us the timing was somewhat of a coincidence. "We've been working on the 'Cry-Baby' DVD for a long time. We were waiting for Johnny Depp to be available to do his interview for it, which he was very gracious to do," says the filmmaker of Depp, who plays a 1950s juvenile delinquent heartthrob in the musical flick. Updates from DeppCon 2005
We soon will be sending out an email to everyone asking if you plan on taking the bus tour and/or seeing the movie.  Your response will help us immensely with planning.  We have found out that the Wax Museum where Captain Jack resides will give us a group discount.  The cost is $6.00, so we will also need to know if you want to see the good Captain, also fondly known as "Wax Jack".

We can't help but be impressed with the work the DeppCon Committee Member in charge of the bus tour has put into making this a fabulous ride.  You will be amazed at the places the tour takes you . . . places you would never dream have Johnny connections.  It's going to be fantastic - bring your camera!

As far as accommodations at the Anaheim Plaza Hotel and Suites are concerned, there are still a few rooms left, but you need to make your reservations very soon as the last day to book a room is June 23.  After that date, you  will have to contact us and we will try to help.

Now, for those of you sitting on the fence . . . should I go to the Convention or not . . . well, of course, you should.  Where else could you be surrounded by others who share your Depp feelings and won't wonder about your interest in Johnny?  If you can't participate in all the activities, that's OK.  Come and take part in whatever you can.  Remember registration is open until July 13.  After that you will need to register at the door.

And, no we didn't forget the countdown -- 35 days to DeppCon 2005!

ASPEN, Colo. It's a question county officials don't get every day.
What kind of permit do you need to shoot the ashes of a "gonzo" journalist from a 150-foot fist-shaped cannon?

A county official in Colorado says he doesn't see a problem with fulfilling Hunter S. Thompson's wish. He says the event is private and doesn't need a special permit.

The plan calls for the cremated remains to be shot from a steel monument that resembles Thompson's "gonzo fist" emblem. Actor Johnny Depp is reportedly footing the bill. He played Thompson in the movie version of his book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

The August 20th service will mark six months since Thompson killed himself at his home near Aspen. It'll include speeches and live entertainment.

Star-studded opening for Roald Dahl centre
June 6, 2005

By Paul Leat

SOPHIE Dahl is among a host of celebrity guests expected to be in Great Missenden on Friday for the grand opening of the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre.

The author's granddaughter will be joining other movie stars including Johnny Depp currently filming the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for a champagne party on Friday, June 10.

Great Missenden was chosen as the site for the new museum as Roald Dahl lived there from 1916 to 1990. He wrote all of his books for both children and adults there too.

The museum was first mentioned as a concept almost a decade ago, and the design has been totally inspired by Roald Dahl's most memorable characters.

Sue Davies, director of the centre, said: "There are very few places which present reading, writing and creativity in a fun way. Our venue will rectify that, building on Roald Dahl's work and using that as the beginning of a magical journey into further reading and writing."

After passing under a shadow of the BFG (the Big Friendly Giant), guests walk through the museum's chocolate-coated doors into the main building, being careful to avoid the crocodile cunningly disguised as a bench.

Visitors can also expect to be dazzled by a spectacular array of displays and shows highlighting the life and work of one of Britain's favourite authors.

Many of his most treasured possessions will be on display, and large video screens are being installed to provide original footage of the author at work.

The museum, on the site of an old coaching inn in High Street, Great Missenden, will form one of the largest literary archives in the world.

It will contain drafts of every major work, proof and correspondence with agents and editors that Roald Dahl ever recorded. The archive will even be home to the idea books where so many of his stories began.

In the Story Centre there will be an exhibition showing how other contemporary authors work, with some fun games as well.

Val Rutt, whose debut novel The Race for the Lost Keystone was published last year, has already been confirmed as the first writer-in-residence, and will be on hand to give advice to visiting groups.

From Saturday, June 12, the centre will be open to the public, with normal opening hours being 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

An extensive programme of activities has already been drawn together for the forthcoming weeks after the official opening, including talks on how to become the best story teller ever and lessons in chocolate truffle making.

And the film, based on the band's autobiography THE DIRT, will be closely overseen by the GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS rockers to ensure an accurate representation.

Lee adds, "We've just got the script through and I haven't had a chance to read it. We haven't picked a director yet. The four of us will produce or co-produce to make sure everything is exact."

Leonardo DiCaprio, the Best Actor Oscar nominee this year for his outstanding role in 'The Aviator', and Johnny Depp, the Oscar-nominee "Finding Neverland" star have been voted the greatest actors of this generation.

According to the GQ magazine, which has listed the Top 10 greatest Hollywood actors in its March issue, Depp has been described as a unique performer, perhaps one of the few actors who has been able to show off his versatility in offbeat flicks or big-budget studio franchises

From the Money Plans
Johnny Depp says that being with his girlfriend is the only thing that keeps him sane.

The "Pirates Of The Caribbean" star, who has battled addictions to drink and drugs, says that long-term lover Vanessa Paradis is the only person who can rescue him from his demons when he falls into bouts of depression, reported the Femalefirst portal.

Johnny's Prized Painting
JOHNNY DEPP'S PRIZED PAINTING  by Richard Horgan     6/3/2005 at 14:28 (excerpt)
This time of year in L.A., all the pre-schools turn to their Hollywood connections to raise some bucks for the next school year.

At one mid-city pre-school, for example, a painting donated by actor and father Johnny Depp fetched a cool $37,000.

Still... Not all agree with the view of Depp as a multi-talented artiste; check out this faux interview about his forgotten blockbuster hit, Watching Paint Dry.

DeppCon 2005 Update
There is a drawing for the free tickets to see C&TCF and the bus tour.  The five lucky winners will be drawn on Sunday, June 5, by a person not connected with DeppCon.  On Monday, June 6, we will send an email announcing the names of the lucky five winners (first name and last initial only).  It's time to cross your fingers and hope you are a winner!

If you are planning to attend the Convention, it would really help the Committee if you would register as soon as possible.  Many activities are based on attendance, for example, reserving tickets for C&TCF.  By registering now it would really help us to finalize plans.  There is still time to make your hotel reservation and one of the great things about the Anaheim Plaza Hotel and Suites is that parking is free

Depp is courted for Wrexham film
It is hoped Johnny Depp will be on board within three weeks

Hollywood's Johnny Depp is being courted to star in a film about a drug addict who turns his life around after living on the streets of Wrexham.

Shooting of Addict, based on the best-selling biography of writer Stephen Smith, is to start this summer.

Lord of the Rings and King Kong star Andy Serkis has already been signed up to direct the movie.

Mr Smith said he was in talks and hoped to sign up Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp "within three weeks".

The 61-year-old writer said the film will be all about his life as a young man addicted to amphetamines who drifted into crime and ended up living on the streets of Wrexham for a few months.

"It's a horror story with a fairytale ending - irregardless of how low you go with drink and drugs you can still get out of it," said Mr Smith, who now lives in Germany with his wife and family.

Begging

He said he came to Wrexham 26 years ago simply because he was thrown off a train with no ticket. He found the locals very "hospitable".

"In those days there wasn't the Big Issue on the street, there wasn't begging on every corner," he said.

"If anything (as) a young boy on the streets with a London accent I was a novelty."

Later the writer emerged from a toilet pub to meet a German student, whom he later married, and his life was gradually turned around. They now have two grown-up sons.

Andy Serkis
Lord of The Rings star Serkis has already signed up as director

Filming will begin in various locations around the UK in late August, he said, with the idea will show a "collage" of his life as a drifter. Scenes will also be shot in Malta and Munich and the film will go on release in the UK next March.

Andy Serkis who played Gollum in Lord of the Ring and who is in this summer's blockbuster King Kong has already been signed up as the film's director, according to Mr Smith.

Signing Johnny Depp in the lead role would be the "cream on the cake".

"I think it's his type of role- he will relish it," Mr Smith said: "We hope in a few weeks to have the deal signed and sealed and you'll see Johnny Depp on the streets of Wrexham."

For Hollywood giant Depp, the role could be almost a reprise of one he took in Blow in which he played a cocaine king.

It could also mean a return to Wales for the actor who filmed some of the scenes for The Libertine in Tretower Court, near Crickhowell in Powys in March 2004.

A spokesman for Wales Screen Commission which handles film and television productions said they had not been contacted about the film.

National co-ordinator Mike Wallwork said: "We've not been contacted by the film company and the project is not known to the UK Film Council".

WILDER: 'WONKA REMAKE IS ALL ABOUT MONEY'

Movie funnyman GENE WILDER has attacked TIM BURTON's choice of JOHNNY DEPP to play WILLY WONKA in upcoming film CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY as a money-making ploy.

Wilder, who played Wonka in the original 1971 film WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, is suspicious of movie moguls' motives for remaking the ROALD DAHL fantasy, and sees it as "pointless".

He says, "It's all about money. It's just some people sitting around thinking 'How can we make some more money?' Why else would you remake Willy Wonka?

"I don't see the point of going back and doing it all over again.

"I like Johnny Depp, and I appreciate that he has said on record that my shoes will be hard to fill. But I don't know how it will all turn out."

Despite Wilder's reservations, Burton insists his film will be closer to the original Dahl novel, than Wilder's musical version.

From Ellis Hellican about a possible glitch in the Gonzo plans for Hunter
(excerpt)
Self-consciously cool actor Johnny Depp has graciously agreed: He'll pay to build a 150-foot tower in Hunter Thompson's yard. The tower is supposed to hold the cannon that will scatter the dead writer's ashes in Woody Creek, Colo., on Aug. 16. Now, the Pitkin County Community Development Department wants to see construction plans. Gonzo is one thing - but suburban Pitkin County has some very un-gonzo zoning laws. The questions are the obvious ones: You want to build a 150-foot tower? On a quiet suburban street? And shoot a live cannon from up there? There shall be public hearings! Ka-boom!
