Johnny Depp rocks out for charity

Johnny Depp joined his old band "The Kids" on stage in Pompano Beach, Florida for a Sheila Witkin memorial concert. She was the mother of his best friend and fellow guitarist Bruce Witkin and was responsible for the South Florida music scene in the 1970's and 80's. The foursome played some of their own tunes and also some covers including U2's "I Will Follow" and The Jackson Fives "I Want You Back." A good band and Depp showed himself to be a well competent guitarist who executed his parts flawlessly.  (Photo:chinadaily.com.cn/Agency)

JOHNNY DEPP UPSTAGES GIMENEZ

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, embroiled in a battle of political wills with Mayor Carlos Alvarez, was upstaged Friday morning -- by Johnny Depp.

Gimenez was scheduled to appear on Jim DeFede's WINZ-AM (940) radio show to discuss his plans for the public-corruption arm of the county's police department.

But when a member of Depp's entourage called DeFede's producer Thursday evening, the commissioner's time slot was quickly moved back a half-hour to 7:30 a.m.

Gimenez got to the studio unaware it was Depp -- star of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Pirates of the Caribbean series -- who caused the time change.

''Johnny Depp's security people were looking in windows and pointing at things,'' said DeFede, adding that the Depp entourage made its way into the studio before Gimenez left.

''All of a sudden, the door to the studio flew open. There was a little mob, Depp and his crew and a video team making a documentary. There was a lot of buzz going on,'' he said.

So the commissioner, after making his points, slid out a side door quietly.

Gimenez said it was all good fun.

''That's OK. He's got a little more star power than me,'' said the commissioner. ``He looked just like his character in Pirates of the Caribbean, except his hair was a little shorter.''

Depp, who grew up in Miramar, was in town to raise some money playing with an old high school band called The Kids at Club Cinema in Pompano Beach on Sunday -- a benefit concert for Sheila Witkin, the mother of one of Depp's band-mates who died recently.

Pirates invade Tom Sawyer Island
The Disneyland attraction will add live buccaneers and games to the classic Disney playground.
By SARAH TULLY
The Orange County Register

Disneyland officials are saying "Aye!" to pirates, but "Arrr!" to looting Tom Sawyer Island.

Officials announced Friday that live pirate characters and games will become part of Tom Sawyer Island, the classic Disneyland playground designed by Walt Disney himself.

Disney officials also announced plans to open the Toy Story Mania! ride next year in Disney's California Adventure. The interactive ride will incorporate game technology, similar to the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters attraction in Disneyland. Riders will put on 3-D glasses and shoot at targets with toy cannons along the track. The ride is under construction.

In regard to the island, it leaked out late last year that Disneyland wanted to banish Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, and instead turn it into another Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

In the end, designers decided to integrate the pirate subplots from Mark Twain's books, calling it "Pirate's Lair at Tom Sawyer Island."

"I think that the word getting out sort of helped it remain a little bit more Tom Sawyerish than it would have been," said Al Lutz, editor of Miceage.com, a Disney watchdog Web site that reported the news last year.

The makeover is to coincide with the planned May release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the third in the movie series that popularized pirates and is based on the Disneyland ride.

Rob Doughty, Disneyland's spokesman, said the island will retain Walt Disney's original vision. Old concept drawings show pirate imagery, including Jolly Roger flags on the rafts used to get to the Frontierland island.

Pirate details will go in Tom and Huck's treehouse and Smuggler's Cove, keeping the rope and barrel bridges. Visitors will search for buried treasure on the island, while live pirate characters wander.

Margot Wright, an Anaheim resident since 1954 who lives about a mile away, said she worries the island will become too commercialized.

"I prefer to leave it just as an island. Why tie it into pirates? We've already got Pirates of the Caribbean and enough stuff in New Orleans Square," said Wright, 56.

JOE STRUMMER: THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN

by Jeremy Mathews
(2007-01-21)
2006, Un-rated, 123 minutes
Depending on who you ask, Joe Strummer was an innovator, a coward, a digester of all styles and types of music, a confused jerk and/or a dreamer. "Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten" searches for the truth about the musician who shifted from hippie to punk, expanded the scope and possibility of his newfound genre, then quit at the pinnacle of the fame he initially craved.

Documentarian Julien Temple orchestrates a pile of archival footage and interviews—including some with Strummer shot prior to his death in December 2002—into a blazing tribute full of animation, montages and rarities. Some of the archival footage is remarkable, including a shot in the opening sequence showing Strummer in the studio recording "The Clash" in 1977. We hear his vocals to "White Riot" a cappella, the raw power of it standing out without the violent instrumentation serving as a motivator.

As it has a more complex subject than Temple's 2000 Sex Pistols documentary, "The Filth and the Fury," the movie takes on an introspective tone as it searches for the essence of Strummer's life. Seen as a caring, politically conscious and charismatic by most of the interviewees, he nevertheless had behavioral lapses.

His most infamous turn came when he joined The Clash. As he ditched his his first successful local London band, The 101ers, to become a punk rocker, he adopted the jaded, angry persona of the movement and didn't even acknowledge his friends from the old scene anymore. Others note his era of personal discovery after he left The Clash and refrained from producing music for a long time.

But everyone remembers Strummer's complete and never-dying love for music. Friends and collaborators share their memories at campfire gatherings, held in tribute to those Strummer arranged in his later years to encourage the return of a sense of community to people's lives. Temple intimately shoots his subjects with the fire illuminating their faces and flickering in the foreground. The less expected faces include director Jim Jarmusch and actor Steve Buscemi, who both worked with Strummer on the film "Mystery Train," and celebrities like Johnny Depp and Martin Scorsese.

Temple never identifies his subjects with title cards, presumably to give the film a less stuffy feel. However, the decision may frustrate people who want to know who some of the people, aged 20 or 30 years, are. The structure also tends to wander a bit, with more interview clips than are necessary. (Not every music documentary needs to have Bono in it.) But Temple succeeds in creating a portrait neither glowing nor damning, but representative of a remarkable man.

They have a cute video of Johnny's 27th birthday party.
Johnny Depp blushed, he grimaced, he averted his eyes and shied away in embarrassment — when a touchy-feely belly dancer flirted with him at his 27th birthday party!

It's all there on a home video Star has exclusively unearthed showing shy young Johnny long before he became the freaky Pirate of the Caribbean.

"He was genuinely embarrassed," his stepsister Sandy Gambino told Star. "He was flustered, he didn't know where to look when the belly dancer fussed all over him, sitting on his lap and stroking his hair.

"Everybody at the party was roaring with laughter. Johnny at the time was a national heart-throb on 21 Jump Street, yet he was really a reticent young guy. The belly dancer threw him for a loop!"

The Star video was shot by Sandy's father Robert Haley, a trucker who married Johnny's mother Betty Sue Depp in 1984.

The occasion was Johnny's 27th birthday. His mom and Haley threw a surprise pool party for the young Star at their modest two-bedroom, two-bath home in Hollywood, Florida.

"Johnny was filming 21 Jump Street in Vancouver, Canada, and flying back to south Florida every chance he got to see his family and friends," Sandy, 46, of Silver Springs, FL., told Star in an exclusive interview.

"I was married and living in Fort Lauderdale when my father called one day and said: 'Johnny's coming in and we're having a surprise birthday party by our pool. You gotta come over!'

"I brought my six-year-old son David, and found Johnny with his then-secret girlfriend Sherilyn Fenn who was playing Audrey Horne on Twin Peaks at the time.

"They were an obvious couple — holding hands, kissing and smooching in the pool. At the time they were both famous, with megahit TV shows, but the public didn't know they were an item.

"But we did! And it's all on the video. She threw us off at first because we all knew her as a famous brunette. But at the party she had blonde hair for a part she was playing. It was a riot!"

Also at the party were Johnny's mom, step-dad Robert, a keen amateur photographer who shot the video, Johnny's two sisters and their partners — and the belly dancer.

"My dad and Betty Sue had found her through an ad in the yellow pages and thought it would be a hoot to surprise Johnny," said Sandy.

"No one knew how much it would fluster him. He was sitting at a table on the patio when she appeared in her outfit of veils and scanty bikini. Then she started shaking her belly directly in front of him — and his face was a picture.

"He turned beet red and then he looked this way and that. The thing is that this dancer was not a skinny gal. She was a big chunky woman and she was right in Johnny's face, patting his cheeks and stroking his hair.

"The more she touched and fooled with him the more embarrassed he became — to everyone's enjoyment. We hooted with laughter to see this national heartthrob squirm at this over-sized lady's attentions. His girlfriend Sherilyn laughed as much as everyone else."

Johnny and his stepfather drank Budweiser beer — Robert had an extra fridge in the garage — while his mom drank rum and cokes. "We all enjoyed the beer, cocktails and soft drinks," said Sandy.

Food was supplied by Betty Sue and her two daughters — nothing catered. "We had hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, macaroni and cheese and potato chips. Nothing fancy —just a regular American backyard pool party," Sandy told Star.

The party lasted all day with folks cooling off in the pool while Robert's easy-listening music — Perry Como, Andy Williams and Sinatra — played on a stereo in the background.

"My dad gave Johnny one of his prize possessions as a birthday present. It was a 200-year-old antique violin that he'd cherished. At the time I was pissed off because I'd always loved that violin and thought one day it would be mine. But Johnny got it — and that's okay. I'm finally over it now," said Sandy.

"It was a fun time — Johnny was so easy to be around. But I'll never forget the day an international superstar was shocked and flustered by a belly dancer," said Sandy.

Shrek,' Spidey,' Pirates' and Potter' lead cast of Hollywood's big summer
By David Germain/Associated Press
Sunday, January 21, 2007 - Updated: 12:00 AM EST

LOS ANGELES There are big years for movies, and there are BIG years. Then there's 2007, which has some Hollywood types thinking a record box-office year may be at hand.

The month of May alone has dollar signs dancing in studio executives' heads as the third installments to three of the all-time biggest movie franchises hit theaters within a three-week span.

First up, "Spider-Man 3," with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst returning as the young superhero and his dreamgirl. Next comes "Shrek the Third," with Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas back as mouthpieces of the lovable animated fairy-tale kooks. Then there's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," with Johnny Depp continuing the cliffhanger left from last summer's blockbuster.

Two other heavyweights follow soon after: the animated "Ratatouille," a comedy about a gourmet rodent from the Disney-Pixar partnership; and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint going back to wizardry school in the fantasy series' fifth chapter.

"There is a lot to see," said Maguire, whose boyish Peter Parker the nerd turned superhero by a mutant arachnid's bite finds himself wrestling with his dark side just when he thought he'd gotten his act together in "Spider-Man 3."

"Things are going pretty well for Peter. He's got his girl, he's got his job and school. He's kind of just managing his whole life," Maguire said. "Generally, Peter's in a good state. Of course, it doesn't stay that way."

If they matched the business their predecessors have done, those five films alone would account for nearly 20 percent of the $9.4 billion haul that all movies rang up domestically last year.

The schedule is so loaded that even the sequels "Ocean's Thirteen," "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" and "Rush Hour 3" would make for an impressive summer. Plus, there's an animated lineup that includes a big-screen take on "The Simpsons."

Winter and spring have some intriguing movie prospects, including comedies from Eddie Murphy ("Norbit") and Will Ferrell ("Blades of Glory"), a dramatic turn from Adam Sandler ("Reign Over Me"), and thrillers featuring Hilary Swank ("The Reaping") and Sandra Bullock ("Premonition").

The fall and holiday season presents such highlights as Will Smith in the apocalyptic tale "I Am Legend," Nicolas Cage in the sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," Nicole Kidman in the fantasy "The Golden Compass," Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe in the crime saga "American Gangster" and the voices of Jerry Seinfeld and Renee Zellweger in the animated comedy "Bee Movie."

But as usual, the real heavy hitters are crowded into summer. Here's a look at what's up with summer's key blockbusters in waiting:

"Shrek the Third" All a hideous ogre wants is to settle down in the swamp with his not-so-beautiful bride. But Myers' Shrek finds himself drafted into the family business after his kingly father-in-law expires and the ogre faces the prospect of ruling the land in his stead.

"For Shrek, he's just convinced he's not capable of that. He's an ogre. He's not wired that way," said Chris Miller, a story artist on "Shrek" and head of the story department on "Shrek 2" who now graduates to directing "Shrek the Third." "There is another option, which is finding the next heir."

Shrek heads out with sidekicks Donkey (Murphy) and Puss In Boots (Banderas) to find the future King Arthur, a royal cousin next in line for the throne. Meantime, Fiona (Diaz) finds herself mentoring Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Snow White, teaching the pampered princesses to stand on their own after Prince Charming usurps the kingdom.

Among the new additions to the voice cast: Justin Timberlake, Cheri Oteri, Amy Sedaris and Ian McShane.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" When we last saw rascally buccaneer Jack Sparrow (Depp) in "Dead Man's Chest," Davy Jones had hauled him to a watery hell. Jack's pals (Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley) joined their villainous rival (Geoffrey Rush) to begin a quest to retrieve him.

The new film picks up right at that point, said producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who shepherded the first two movies based on the Disney theme-park ride to blockbuster status.

For scheduling and financial reasons, Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski shot much of the second and third films at the same time. The advantage for audiences: They only have to wait a matter of months to see how last summer's cliffhanger turns out, rather the usual two or three years between major sequels.

"When we showed Dead Man's Chest,' kids came up to us. They wanted to go to the theater next door and see the third one. They were ready to see it the same day," Bruckheimer said.

"Spider-Man 3" Maguire's bright-eyed Peter and Spidey also pick up where they left off in the last film. Peter's finally hooked up with girl-next-door Mary Jane (Dunst), managing to juggle his photography job, schoolwork, his love life and the superhero gig.

But after he gains fresh powers when his blue-and-red Spider-Man costume turns black, Peter's dark side asserts itself, leaving him caught in an inner struggle just as two new villains (Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace) turn up.

And hanging over all of Peter's problems is the enmity of his former best friend, Harry (James Franco), who blames Spider-Man for the death of his father.

Sam Raimi, who made the first two "Spider-Man" movies, is back to direct again in what could be the last film for the franchise.

"I feel like this film is kind of a natural conclusion to a lot of stuff that's happened in the first two movies. It kind of feels like a natural trilogy," said Maguire, adding that he's open to donning Spidey's suit again. "If a story presents itself, if we come up with something we feel deserves to be told. I'm not going to make them just because they've been successful."

"Ratatouille" Hollywood has offered dueling animated bug movies and killer-asteroid movies. On the heels of the rodent cartoon "Flushed Away" comes another rat tale, this one from the animation masters at Pixar.

Directed by Brad Bird ("The Incredibles"), "Ratatouille" follows the adventures of a rodent living in Paris who dreams of becoming a French chef, despite family objections and the obvious obstacles to the idea of rats in the kitchen.

But when chance lands him in the sewers directly beneath a restaurant where his culinary idol cooks, our whiskered friend hopes for a chance to break into the world of fancy cuisine.

The voice cast includes Brad Garrett, Janeane Garofalo, Ian Holm, Brian Dennehy and Patton Oswalt.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" Boy wizard Harry (Radcliffe) and buddies Hermione (Watson) and Ron (Grint) come back to school for year five, only to find a conspiracy in the magical community afoot over the return of the dark Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) in the last movie.

Disbelieving that the evil one has come back, bureaucrats hamstring Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore (Michael Gambon), appointing a new instructor whose classes leave the kids ill-prepared to defend themselves against the dark arts.

So Harry and his crew form a secret society to learn the magic tricks they need to take on Voldemort.

"It's quite political. Harry has witnessed the return of Lord Voldemort and is shocked that the discovery he's made is being quashed by the ministry of magic," said "Order of the Phoenix" director David Yates. "Harry and his friends discover the grown-up world is quite complex and you can't always rely on grown-ups to sort things out. Sometimes, you have to stand on your own."

Depp's 'Infinitum Nihil' production company full plate

Johnny Depp may be the people's choice for most popular actor, but his role as producer is growing daily with his company, Infinitum Nihil based in Los Angeles.

Depp's films in various stages of development include "Shantaram," the Gregory David-Roberts and Eric Roth penned script which has Depp attached to star in. Depp's character Lindsay arrives in Mumbai after escaping from an Australian prison where he was serving a 19-year sentence for drug related armed robberies.

In Mumbai, he meets Prabhakar who takes him to his native village where the locals relaunch his criminal career as Shantaram in the city's underworld.  The director is still to be announced, and at one point was rumored to be director Peter Weir.

"Inamorata" is another Depp production in development that has Peter Medak attached as director, and is about the roaring 1920's, when spiritualism was hot, and the population was enamored of seances, Ouija boards, palm readings and metaphysics.

A Harvard grad, Martin Finch, is sent by Scientific American to examine society psychic Mina Crawley, but falls for Mina in a dark thriller of a tale, according to Production Weekly.

The "Affected Provincial's Companion" is also in newly in development for Depp's Infinitum Nihil shingle, and details the life of Lord Whimsy.  In an attempt to live as beautifully as his modest means will allow, Whimsy dwells in former army barracks in a small rural town in the New Jersey Pine Barrens for twelve years.

Whimsy creates for himself a garden-choked aesthete's outpost filled with books, animals, and artwork. He regularly posts on an online journal, where he discusses topics as diverse as carnivorous plants, moustache grooming, French nineteenth-century cameo glass vases, and the great Wallace Shawn.

The book was written, designed and illustrated by Breaulove Swells Whimsy, "The Affected Provincial’s Companion, Volume One" is an artifact of the life Whimsy led, the work is filled with hyperbolic essays and meticulous philosophical diagrams, reports Production Weekly.

Lastly, the most recent Depp production news involves the recent death of Alexander Litvinenko, and Warner Bros. and Infinitum Nihil teaming up in a race against Sony and director Michael Mann to bring the deceased spy's tale to the big screen.

Celebrities add spark to Robert Wilson's video portraits

Man with a camera: Robert Wilson has two current shows in New York.
Robert Wilson has been thinking about video portraiture for more than three decades.

When Johnny Depp agreed to be his subject, Wilson stared at a photo of Depp and decided to put him in the costume and makeup of an alter-ego imagined by avant-garde pioneer Marcel Duchamp, "Rose Selavy." Depp is barely recognizable in Rose's extravagant getup.

"He was very open to it," Wilson says. "It didn't take long to finish. He was amazed: ''You don't want me to come back tomorrow?'"

Japanese dads look to Johnny Depp to be 'cool'
Reuters | Monday, 15 January 2007
TOKYO: Their role models are Johnny Depp and David Beckham – fashionable fathers who treasure time with their children.

More and more Japanese men are aiming to join the ranks of the "Cool Dads", in sharp contrast to their own fathers who were known for their "work-till-you-drop" and "leave the kids to the wife" lifestyles.

Magazines have sprung up to guide fathers on everything from Child-rearing, the Male Way to How to Become a Beloved Dad, reflecting the trendiness of being a hands-on parent.

"We're no longer living in an era when it's expected that men go out and women stay home," said Tomohiro Shimizu, publisher of FQ Japan, which stands for Father's Quarterly.

"Fathers in their 30s and 40s still feel a bit ashamed of being a doting parent. We want to change that, spread the image that it's natural, that it's cool," added Shimizu, 39, who has a 3-year-old son.

FQ Japan debuted in December and the maiden issue featured Depp and the words: "Be a Cool Dad" on the cover.

The magazine also ran interviews with celebrity fathers and had plenty of information on parenting products, such as "stylish" buggies.

FQ was first published in Britain in 2003. Shimizu said that when he raised the idea at the time of making a Japanese edition, colleagues said it wouldn't sell.

Perceptions gradually changed, and several parenting magazines aimed at the male reader have now hit newstands, some focusing on education and others even on fashion tips for the stylish father.

"Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, David Beckham – the cool guys, they all have children," said Kiyohiko Okubo, publisher of Oceans, an up-market fashion magazine.

One recent issue ran a feature headlined: "The Coolest Fashion for a Stylish Dad."

"Some playboy-types may have thought it was cool to go out secretly with a woman, make that the highlight of their week," said Okubo, who used to work for a magazine aimed at such readers until he published Oceans in February 2006.

"But more and more men are starting to feel that the highlight should be time with their family."

Tetsuya Ando, who set up Papa's Picturebook Project with other fathers to hold book readings for children, said the economic downturn in the late 1990s led people to realise that there were more important things in life than work.

"With the bursting of the bubble economy and the corporate restructuring that followed, everyone realised that you can't feel fulfilled with just work," said Ando, 44.

One such father is Yuji Yamamoto, who says even changing diapers for his 7-month-old daughter is fun.

"Changing diapers, preparing baby food, it's so exhausting," said Yamamoto, 36, an official at a government ministry.

"But every day her face changes and seeing that is great. It's so much fun."

The book project's Ando said more fathers now showed up at his group's reading sessions whereas when they first started three years ago, almost all children were accompanied by mothers.

Some fathers, however, still struggle to bond with their children. "Sometimes I would spot fathers who don't laugh and who don't look relaxed," Ando said.

"They want to take part in child-rearing, but they just don't know how."

Ando faulted his father's generation – the engine behind Japan's rise to the No 2 spot in the world's economy – for being unable to find a balance between family and work.

And hurdles still remain high at Japan Inc, as the country is often called, for fathers to cut down on their work hours to spend more time with their families.

A survey by education and lifestyle firm Benesse Corp conducted last year showed that compared to their counterparts in other Asian cities, fathers in Tokyo went home the latest, with the largest percentage returning to their families after 11.00pm.

"This is outrageous by global standards. We have to speak out and say it's crazy," said Ando, who plans to set up Fathering Japan, a non-profit organisation aimed at promoting a work-life balance that allows fathers to spend more time with their kids.

That's something Yamamoto, who like many elite bureaucrats often ends up working past midnight, would welcome.

"I'd like to put family over work," he said.

"But these days, I often don't get home until early morning."

Johnny Depp thrilled to meet his literary idol
Washington, Jan 11:

Johnny Depp was excited to meet his idol, Irish author JP Donleavy at the 50th anniversary party of the author's highly acclaimed novel' Ginger Man' in New York, recently.

'The Pirates of the Caribbean' actor, expecting to star in the film adaptation of the novel, was ecstatic to have met his hero and spent two days with him.

"It was great to meet up with this wonderful, wonderful man and spend a couple of days with him in New York. It was, you know, magnificent, meeting one of your heroes like that. He's a beautiful guy, "ContactMusic quoted him, as saying.

"And what he's been through, especially with The Ginger Man, it's miraculous he's still upright," he added.

Donleavy, an Irish-American author was proscribed in the republic of Ireland and USA on publication of obscenity. Ginger Man became a cult hit and college favourite, published in an expurgated edition in the United States in 1958 and an unexpurgated edition in 1965.

The movie, which is scheduled to start filming in early 2007, is about the thrilling exploration of Sebastin Dangerfield, a law student in Dublin, in 1950s.

Johnny Depp to do film about poisoned Russian spy; Columbia plans rival movie
Canadian Press
Published: Saturday, January 13, 2007

LONDON (AP) - Johnny Depp is making a film about a former Russian spy whose poisoning death in London has touched off an international mystery, the trade magazine Variety reports.

Warner Bros. has bought the rights to a book about Alexander Litvinenko for Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, the magazine reported Friday. Depp will produce the film and may star in it, the report said.

Warner Bros. is racing against director Michael Mann and Colombia Pictures, which has agreed to pay $1.5 million for the rights to another book being co-written by the former spy's widow, Marina Litvinenko, and Alex Goldfarb, a close friend, Variety reported later on its website. The book is expected to be published in May.

Warner Bros. had tried unsuccessfully to buy the rights to the book by Litvinenko's widow, the report said. The studio has acquired the rights to a book by New York Times journalist Alan Cowell, which is expected to be published next year.

Officials from both studios were not immediately available for comment.

Mann is known for his crime sagas, including "Collateral," "Heat" and "Miami Vice," while Depp often takes on eccentric character roles in films such as "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Finding Neverland" and "Edward Scissorhands."

The report said Columbia envisions an espionage thriller "exploring the collision between the deep rooted Russian power structure enforced by the KGB . . . and the new wave of wild west capitalism" that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Litvinenko died in November, several weeks after being poisoned by the rare radioactive isotope polonium-210. In a deathbed statement, Litvinenko blamed the Kremlin for his poisoning. Russian officials have denied the allegation.

British and Russian authorities are both investigating his death.

Litvinenko was an agent in the Russian Federal Security Service, the agency that replaced the KGB. After breaking with the agency he was granted asylum in Britain, where he became a fierce Kremlin critic and wrote a book claiming that the agency had bombed apartment buildings in 1999 to blame the blasts on Chechen separatists and create a pretext for resuming the war in Chechnya.

Litvinenko said he fell ill after meeting in London with an Italian security expert to discuss possible suspects in the killing of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya a month earlier. Politkovskaya was noted for her coverage of human rights abuses in Chechnya.

In our last poll from December we asked if Johnny could make a sequel to any of his movies(except the Pirate films), which one would you like it to be.  The results can be seen on our Poll Page.  Surprisingly (or not) you overwhelmingly voted for "Secret Window."  Maybe Stephen King should get going on that sequel!

Johnny Depp Inspires Mary-Kate Olsen's Wardrobe

January 9, 2007 5:22 a.m. EST

Maira Oliveira - All Headline News Reporter

Los Angeles, CA (BANG) - Mary-Kate Olsen should probably go to a real stylist so they can knock some real fashion sense into her head and revamp her totally whacked out, gothic hippie look.

The actress who apparently doesn't know how to dress herself recently said Johnny Depp is her style icon.

The 21-year-old - one half of the multi-million dollar Olsen film, fashion and merchandise empire with twin sister Ashley - has revealed she is inspired by the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor's unique sense of style.

She told Bliss magazine, "Weirdly, I look to guys like Johnny Depp for style tips. He just knows how to put things together and I love that scruffy rock look."

However, Mary-Kate's sister looks to more convention fashion icons for inspiration. Ashley admits she is obsessed with the clothes and glamorous lifestyles of Hollywood starlets from the past.

She said, "I like old movie stars like Audrey Hepburn and Rita Hayworth - they were so stylish."

Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp may be one of Hollywood’s most bankable names but the star of Pirates of the Caribbean could certainly do with a trip to a tailor to sort out the heavily scuffed shoes and dirty trousers he wore after dining with friends at Cipriani in Mayfair last night.

Depp looked as though he had stepped off a building site rather than one of London’s more fashionable restaurants and, in a further touch of fashion eccentricity, he sported a blue polka dot handkerchief billowing from his pocket.

Perhaps the 43-year-old actor has become too used to his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series to bother observing sartorial niceties.

Depp modelled the character on his friend, the hell-raising Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who has a cameo role in the third and final instalment of Pirates, due for release later in the year.

In the forthcoming film, Depp and his co-stars, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, sail off the edge of the map, as well as navigate treachery and betrayal, before one last battle.

Let’s hope there’s time for Depp to smarten up his wardrobe too.

When obsesed Depp stole Hunter S. Thompson's clothing and car!

By ANI
Monday January 8, 01:41 PM

New York, Jan 8(ANI): Actor Johnny Deppy - who has played a range of eccentric characters - reportedly became so obsesed with Hunter S. Thompson, that he turned into a burglar, stealing a lot of the legendary Gonzo journalist's clothing and his car.

In the book, "Johnny Depp: A Kind of Illusion" by Denis Meikle, director Terry Gilliam says that during the making of "Fear and Loathing," in which Depp portrayed Thompson, the star quickly got into the skin of the booze-swilling author's character.

"Johnny spent a lot of time with him and basically stole a lot of his clothing and his car - which were then used in the movie," the New York Post quoted Gilliam, as saying.

Meanwhile author Meikle suggests Depp, once considered an outspoken, uncompromising personality, may have become just another Hollywood phony, as he says: "Of late, his comments have sounded increasingly anodyne and indistinguishable from those of any other cog in the wheel of the dollar-hungry Hollywood machine".

"Every screenplay is the best, every story the most interesting, every producer/director the most brilliant to work with, every co-star the most fascinating to work alongside. [It's] like a tape playing on a continuous loop, with only the names interchanging. Same old, same old," the writer added.

In other news, Depp doesn't mind being considered "weird" because he believes it shows his individuality. He has played cross-dressing B-movie director Ed Wood, a disturbing Willy Wonka in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake and Edward Scissorhands and has recently signed up to star as the murderous Sweeney Todd in the forthcoming Tim Burton's musical film.

'Pirates' and Marvel overwhelm 'Superman,' DC projects

| Thursday December 28 2006, 4:50pm

Back in 1973, singer Jim Croce warned people not to pull on Superman's cape. Apparently, Capt. Jack Sparrow, who proved to be Supes' box office version of Kryptonite this year, didn't get the memo.

"The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" made over $1 billion worldwide, while "Superman Returns" struggled to make more than $391 million overall. The third "X-Men" film put a further smack-down on the Man Steel with a final overall gross of about $458.8 million.

To add insult to injury, Superman temporarily lost his powers in the comics during "One Year Later." That storyline abruptly jumped the entire DC Comics universe forward exactly 365 days a year when the Man of Steel, Wonder Woman and Batman weren't around.

On the positive side, critics have praised "All Star Superman" by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. The comic industry magazine Wizard named the character its "Hero of the Year."

The insider's guide to 2007
POSTED: 7:47 a.m. EST, January 2, 2007

LONDON, England (CNN) -- From the silver screen to the sports field, we present a round up of the potential hits and misses of 2007.

Film: Prepare yourself for the summer of sequels -- sequels of sequels to be exact -- as the Hollywood movie machine churns out big budget films featuring some familiar characters guaranteed to make the cash registers ch-ching. Anyone accusing the industry of a lack of imagination will be pointed to the studios' balance sheets and reminded that for the most part they're in it for the money. Those looking for something different might be better off at one of the independent film festivals taking place throughout year starting with the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, USA in January.

As for the blockbusters, get ready for the return of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, who will be lurching his way through the final installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World's End." Also starring will be the man Depp based his stumbling, slurring corsair on, Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who will appear as his long lost father. Keeping the amount of CGI high to avoid a yawn factor "Spider-Man 3" will be another familiar face to swing back onto the big screen in May, as well as Shrek the Third. George Clooney and co also get a third outing as the high-rolling criminal outfit in "Oceans 13." Finally making their debut appearance on the big screen will be America's first family, The Simpsons.

'Pirates' is top movie of 2006
POSTED: 11:09 a.m. EST, January 1, 2007
(Excerpt)
Story Highlights
• "Pirates of the Caribbean" is 2006's top-grossing film
• "Pirates" is only film to pass $400 million domestically
• Four other films made more than $200 million

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Box office slump? What box office slump?

The theatrical box office might be under siege, but it fought back and actually gained some ground in 2006. As the box office year, which will conclude with the New Year's holiday weekend, winds to an end, the total national tally is headed toward an estimated $9.42 billion, which would represent an increase of nearly 5 percent compared with 2005's $8.99 billion.

Certainly, records were set along the way: The biggest cheers surrounded the record-breaking opening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which set both an opening-day and single-day record of $55.8 million when it bowed July 7, supplanting the mark established a little more than a year earlier, when "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith," debuted to $50 million on May 19, 2005.

"Dead Man's Chest's" opening weekend of $135.6 million also supplanted "Spider-Man's" $114.8 million record set in 2002. It also took just two days for "Dead Man's Chest" to pass the $100 million mark, another first.

That helped set the tone for what proved to be a much more hopeful year -- at points during the summer, the year-to-date box office was running as high as 6-7 percent above the comparable 2005 figures.
