Jolie and Depp have reportedly signed up to appear in the new film based on Emily Bronte’s classic novel.

Jolie really does have all the luck!

JOHNNY DEPP:
THE MAVERICK
From his multiple tattoos to his unpredictable choice of roles, Johnny Depp, 42, coolly strolls to the beat of his own drummer – with a mysterious allure. "He manages to morph into the characters he plays," says his Pirates of the Caribbean costar Orlando Bloom. But no matter his role – be it a rotting-toothed pirate or a man in drag (Before Night Falls) – Depp's chiseled features just can't be masked.

Depp and Jolie to play Heathcliff and Cathy in Yorkshire
Megastars make for the moors as Hollywood tees up remake of Bronte classic Wuthering Heights
EXCLUSIVE
by ALISON BELLAMY
Hollywood megastars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are to star in a Yorkshire blockbuster of Wuthering Heights.

The Emily Bronte 1847 classic, set on the isolated Top Withens area of the Yorkshire Moors above Haworth, is the inspiration behind a new, lavish depiction of the gripping Victorian tale.

Film chiefs have told the Yorkshire Evening Post 'off the record' that the deal has been done to bring two of the film industry's biggest stars to Yorkshire. Film scouts are understood to have been combing the Yorkshire area in the last 10 days to find the perfect film locations to film the wild, passionate scenes between two of the world's hottest stars, who will play Heathcliff and Cathy, two of the literary world's greatest romantic figures.
They are rumoured to start filming next year and could be in Yorkshire for six months, along with a huge crew and cast. The lid is being kept on details of the deal.

Depp, 42, who is a lover of the Bronte's literary works, once said during an interview: "Am I a romantic? I've seen Wuthering Heights 10 times. I'm a romantic."

Jolie, 30, who is expecting Brad Pitt's child, and has just finished filming the Good Shepherd, is known for her campaigning work abroad for poverty-stricken children. Jolie has adopted two children, for whom it is expected that Brad Pitt will become an adoptive dad.

Wuthering Heights is the story of the tangled passion which grips Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff.
It relates to the lives of the Earnshaws, a family of farmers.
One day Mr Earnshaw returns from a trip to the city bringing with him a ragged little boy called Heathcliff.
Earnshaw's son, Hindley, resents the child, but Heathcliff becomes companion and soulmate to Hindley's sister, Catherine.

After her parents die, Cathy and Heathcliff grow up wild and free on the Moors and despite the continued enmity between Hindley and Heathcliff they are happy, until Cathy meets Edgar Linton, the son of a wealthy neighbour.
Kaye Elliott, Production Liaison Manager at Screen Yorkshire said: "There are often rumours of this nature, we are unable to deny or confirm anything at the moment."
Screen Yorkshire is the strategic agency for film, broadcast and digital media in the Yorkshire and Humber region, encourages national and international film and TV companies to film in the region using its knowledge of the filming infrastructure to provide information on key facilities.

New Libertine Release Date
We have a new release date for "The Libertine" of March 10, 2006.  This is from my source at Deep Focus, the PR firm for the Weinstein Bros.  This is a theatrical release (not DVD as some thought).

More on the Dustin bracelet Johnny wears from Lori Butterworth (with a little help from our friend Karen at Johnny Depp Reads)

From Parade Magazine

The bracelet is in memory of Dustin, a dynamic 11 year old cancer patient who dreamed of being an actor.    As Dustin was declining, we called board member, Melissa Gilbert, then President of the Screen Actors Guild.  Melissa, along with other members of the Guild (Leonard DiCaprio, Will Smith, etc.) brought Dustin his official Screen Actors Guild card and christened him “an official actor and member of the Screen Actors Guild.”  Dustin died two weeks later and left with us his message, “Today is a gift…have fun.”  Last year for Christmas, Melissa sent bracelets to her friends in memory of Dustin, among them, Johnny Depp, Hilary Swank, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Jennifer Garner and Kiefer Sutherland.

I am proud to be associated with brave Dustin.

When Johnny Depp wore Dustin’s bracelet as he put his hands into the cement at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre – the ultimate for any actor – it was another way of fulfilling sweet little Dustin’s dream of becoming an actor.

As shown HERE the Fifth Season DVD for 21 Jump Street is out.  They refer to the "Infamous Blackout Episode" on the back cover.  That is the only episode on the entire dvd that has Johnny in it.  He obviously did not want to be in it, and he has his hair in his face through the entire show.  This is one I highly reccomend you just rent if you MUST see it.  This show was actually a Fourth season show, but they held it back for the Fifth season DVD just to get Depp fans to spend the money, as far as I can see, then they put Johnny on the cover bigger than any of the other actors, as if the entire DVD revolves around him.

Odd Man In
Johnny Depp on the ''Pirates'' life. Now that the eccentric star finally has a bona fide hit under his belt, he's Hollywood's hot commodity -- but that doesn't mean he'll stop taking those weird roles by Chris Nashawaty

WEIRD SCIENCE Depp has made a career of playing oddballs like Ed Wood and Hunter S. Thompson

In ''Once Upon a Time in Mexico'' (Sept. 12), a sequel of sorts to 1995's ''Desperado,'' Johnny Depp plays a sociopathic CIA agent who hires Antonio Banderas' El Mariachi to sabotage a political assassination on the Day of the Dead. Not surprisingly, Depp -- known for the quirky qualities he's brought to such films as ''Edward Scissorhands,'' ''Ed Wood,'' and ''Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'' -- had certain ideas about his ''Mexico'' character. ''Before he even got there he called and said, 'I imagine this guy wears these really cheesy tourist shirts,''' recalls director Robert Rodriguez, who admits that he still had no idea what he would be in for.

Before showing up on the set in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Depp called his sister in Florida and had her scour the area for T-shirts with silly slogans like ''CIA: Cleavage Inspection Agency'' and ''I'm With Stupid,'' featuring an arrow pointing below the belt. ''Florida has no shortage of idiotic T-shirts,'' says Depp. ''I was also desperately looking for one of those baseball caps that say ''S---head'' and has a picture of a coil of dookie on the bill.'' Some of Depp's other flourishes for his character included carrying around a Judy Garland biography (''I just kind of figured that this guy might have a sideline obsession with Broadway'') and wearing an assortment of obvious disguises (''That's why I brought along all my wigs and fake mustaches'').

Depp has been an idiosyncratic presence since his career started in the late '80s, when he pulled stunts on the ''21 Jump Street'' set (wearing a George Washington powdered wig, wrapping rubber bands around his tongue) in an attempt to get out of his contract and the teen idol reputation he was eager to shed. And even now, at 40, Depp still carries the same merry prankster attitude of a young punk. His jeans are ripped at the knee, his boots so scuffed it's hard to discern what color they might have once been, and he's covered in silver rings, charm necklaces, and conversation-piece tattoos. He has a dozen of them. He got the first at 17 (an Indian chief on his right bicep) and the 12th just recently (his son's name, Jack, on his right forearm). When he laughs, which is often, you can still make out the pair of shiny gold-capped teeth he flashed in ''Pirates of the Caribbean'' -- the biggest hit of his odd 20-year career.

Depp still seems a bit dazed by ''Pirates''' success and all the attention he's gotten for his swishing, sozzled performance. So it's strange to hear him explain how his mascara-clad riff on Keith Richards almost got him fired. ''There were a couple of high-end Disney executives who were fine with what I was doing,'' he says. ''But there were a couple who were very worried.... You know, like, 'He's ruining the movie! Why is he acting like that? What's he doing with his hand? Is the character a complete homosexual?' There was a lot of that going on for a solid month and a half. And I understood their worries, but I felt so in tune with this character and so confident that what I was doing was right that I had to say, 'Look, I understand your fear. But you've hired me to do a job. You know what I've done before, so you know it's going to be something along these lines. So please trust me. And if you can't trust me then you probably should replace me.'''

When ''Pirates'' surpassed $100 million at the box office, then $200 million, then $250 million, Depp says he would get congratulatory phone calls from the same folks who had initially questioned his performance. He says those calls were ''deeply satisfying.'' Now all is forgiven and he even hopes to do a sequel. It would be his first. After all, Depp's never been in a movie that's done well enough to warrant a sequel. Not that his fans mind. In Depp, they've seen an artistic martyr -- Hollywood's very own Saint Jude, patron saint of cinematic lost causes. Until now, though, studio heads have had a less charitable label for it: box office poison.

''I think he's probably the premier actor of his day,'' says Miramax head Harvey Weinstein, whose Dimension Films division co-financed ''Mexico'' with Columbia Pictures. But, he adds, ''I think he's been frozen out for years. I think he was looked at as too risky for a lot of the top stuff. A lot of people are going to be kissing his butt now. But what they don't understand about Johnny is that he can smell BS 10 miles away. The same guys who a year ago were saying 'Him? Are you kidding? He's box office poison' now [think] he's the hottest thing in the universe.''

The actor himself swats away these kinds of observations about opening weekends and tracking numbers. ''It's really none of my business,'' says Depp, who enjoys a life far from Hollywood with his girlfriend, 30-year-old actress-singer Vanessa Paradis, and their two children Lily-Rose, 4, and Jack, 1, in the south of France. When pressed why movie studios keep hiring him since his films tend to be commercial disappointments, he shrugs, ''I don't know. Because they're mad. They're insane. All I can say is for a guy like me, who's been dangling in this business for the last 20 years, to finally have something hit, it's unexpected and very touching.''

After the success of ''Pirates of the Caribbean,'' Depp can probably channel anyone he wants in any movie he pleases. Comic-book heroes, franchise no-brainers -- easy paydays for easy performances. Instead, he seems hell-bent on continuing to heed the call of Saint Jude. Already in the can is ''J.M. Barrie's Neverland,'' a drama in which he plays J.M. Barrie, the author of ''Peter Pan.'' And right now he's working on ''Secret Window,'' an adaptation of a Stephen King novella, where he plays a writer being stalked by a deranged hack accusing him of stealing his ideas.

After that, there are a couple of possibilities. One is picking up where he left off on Terry Gilliam's ''The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'' -- the movie whose disastrous unraveling was documented earlier this year in ''Lost in La Mancha.'' Another possibility is reuniting with frequent collaborator Tim Burton to remake ''Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.'' While it's not a done deal, Depp sees ''Wonka'' as the ultimate without-a-net challenge. ''You'll never escape that memory that's seared into your consciousness of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka,'' he admits. ''It was really amazing to watch as a kid growing up, and I've watched it with my kids. So it's just, Okay, where do I go from there? Gene Wilder did something very beautiful and it's time to take it somewhere else.''

Depp doubts that Burton will make him belt out musical numbers like Wilder did in the original, but he's not exactly opposed to the idea, either.

''Sure, why not?''

Because you've never sung before...

''That's all right.''

Aren't you scared of anything?

Pause...

''Clowns.''

Stars accept pay cuts as Hollywood profits dip
John Harlow, Los Angeles

THE Da Vinci Code is one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year but its significance to Hollywood may go deeper than mere box office success: Tom Hanks has delighted his studio bosses by accepting a pay cut for his role as the book’s art sleuth hero.

Facing declining cinema audiences, Hollywood is trying to persuade its top actors to set an example by cutting back a lucrative arrangement known as “first dollar”, under which the director, producer and stars receive a share of a film’s box office take regardless of whether the studio has covered its filming costs.

“First dollar” deals date back to the early 1950s when James Stewart first negotiated a share of the box office receipts for Harvey, a fable about a seemingly delusional man and a giant invisible rabbit. “That rodent will eat Hollywood,” said a Universal studio executive at the time, and he was right: the practice has since been commonplace.

No actors will publicly admit that they have lowered their price but industry reports suggest that Hanks is not alone. Cameron Diaz, who is second only to Julia Roberts in the female stars’ pay scale but still earns on average half a top male star’s salary, is said to have agreed to forgo her “first dollar” deal to star in a romantic comedy called Holiday.

According to industry reports, Disney also cut down on star salaries before filming two sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp is believed to have sacrificed his “first dollar” to allow the studio to afford Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones guitarist, upon whom he modelled his piratical performance.

In the end, Richards did not appear in the first sequel, Dead Man’s Chest, because of touring commitments and is unlikely to be in the second — but nobody expects Depp to be given a pay rise.

Hollywood aims big with Pirates, X-Men, impossible missions and Superman, too

By David Germain
AP Movie Writer

In good years, Hollywood beats its chest and crows, "It’s all about the movies!" In bad years, like 2005, Hollywood looks for something to blame and whispers, "It’s all about the movies."

Studio honchos hope it was just a weak crop of flicks that resulted in a 7 percent drop in movie attendance last year and that doomsayers are wrong in predicting home-entertainment options have eroded the big screen’s appeal.

If it really is all about the movies, 2006 stands a chance of turning Hollywood’s slump around with a film lineup that - on paper, at least - looks like a winner.

You’ve got your man of steel and your mutant superheroes. You’ve got your pirates of the high seas and your overturned luxury liner. You’ve got your cartoon cars and your talking animals. You’ve got your action spectacle from Tom Cruise and your passion project from Mel Gibson.

Here’s a rundown of Hollywood’s sure hits and safe bets, along with a peek at some other intriguing possibilities (where available, specific release dates are included):

CAN’T MISS

* Superman Returns" (June 30): Admit it. For all the X-Men, Bat guys, Spideys and Fantastic Foursomes prancing around on screen, the Boy Scout from Krypton is still your favorite superhero.

As the last "Superman" franchise did when it launched in the 1970s with an unknown named Christopher Reeve in the title role, "Superman Returns" has a fresh face, Brandon Routh.

"I never intended to cast a well-known actor," said "Superman Returns" director Bryan Singer, who made the first two "X-Men" movies. "A known actor comes with baggage, and Superman as a character is much larger than any actor. I wanted him to come just with the baggage of the superhero. That’s enough history to contend with."

"Superman Returns" draws its star power from Routh’s colleagues, Kevin Spacey as super-villain Lex Luthor and Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane.

While it’s not a sequel to the four movies Reeve starred in, "Superman Returns" is "sequel-like," the new movie drawing on the spirit and design of the earlier franchise, Singer said.

The premise: Called away on urgent off-world business, Superman comes back to Earth years later to renew his romantic dance with Lois and save us puny mortals - again.

* X3" (May 26): Those marvelous mutants return for what could be the final chapter in the "X-Men" saga. The whole crew is back, including Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn and Famke Janssen, whose character seemingly died a watery death at the end of "X2: X-Men United."

With Singer moving on to "Superman Returns," directing duties fell to Brett Ratner, maker of the "Rush Hour" flicks.

This time out, the superpowered mutants find themselves slowly being more accepted into a society that feared them as freaks, only to face new turmoil when a "cure" is discovered for their mutant condition.

"If you could actually get rid of your special power which alienates you from the rest of the world, would you do it?" said Jackman, who reprises his role as Wolverine. "It’s a metaphor very much about intolerance, I think, fear of anything that’s different. If you could choose to not be Jewish or not be gay or not be African-American. Life maybe is not as easy if you’re a minority. Would you take the opportunity to change that if you could?"

Jackman said "X3" would conclude the "X-Men" trilogy, though a Wolverine solo movie is in the works.

* Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" (July 7): Hard to believe that just a couple of years ago, Johnny Depp was that weirdo who was box-office poison. Depp follows up his 2003 blockbuster, which earned him an Academy Award nomination, with the first of two sequels (part three follows in 2007).

Depp returns as woozy buccaneer Capt. Jack Sparrow, reunited with co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley and director Gore Verbinski.

* The Da Vinci Code" (May 19): Take one runaway best seller, add the directing-producing team of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer and reunite them with their "Splash" and "Apollo 13" star, this guy named Tom Hanks.

Adapted from Rye author Dan Brown’s murder thriller that dissects the origins of Christianity, the film stars Hanks as a symbologist caught up in the mysteries of an ancient, shadowy religious society.

* Casino Royale" (Nov. 17): Craig, Daniel Craig. Don’t let the blond hair fool you. He’s James Bond.

Craig becomes the sixth actor to play Britain’s super-cool agent 007, with Judi Dench reprising her role as spymaster M in an adaptation of Ian Fleming’s first Bond novel as our hero takes on a dastardly casino owner.

* Cars" (June 9): The folks at Pixar Animation gave you "Toy Story," "A Bug’s Life," "Monsters, Inc," "Finding Nemo," "The Incredibles."

How could they miss with a cartoon comedy about talking automobiles, especially when it’s directed by Pixar’s creative mastermind, John Lasseter?

Owen Wilson, Paul Newman and Bonnie Hunt lead the voice cast in the tale of a race car that learns about life in the slow lane when he’s sidetracked into a snoozy burgh called Radiator Springs.

* Over the Hedge" (May 19): Then you have DreamWorks Animation (the "Shrek" movies, "Madagascar"), whose latest cartoon centers on that demarcation line where human suburbia meets the realm of furry animals in the wild.

Among the voice cast: Bruce Willis as a wily raccoon, Garry Shandling as a timid turtle, Steve Carell as a frenzied squirrel, William Shatner as a possum that specializes in playing dead, Avril Lavigne as the possum’s daughter, Wanda Sykes as a saucy skunk and Nick Nolte as a bear.

* Ice Age 2: The Meltdown" (March 31): A woolly mammoth, a sloth and a saber-toothed tiger walk into a sequel ... Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary reunite as mouthpieces for the mismatched trio from the 2002 animated smash, joined by Queen Latifah, who provides the voice of a fellow mammoth.

The gang this time must run for cover as global warming is about to melt a glacial dam and unleash a catastrophic flood. Fun for all the family.

SAFE BETS

* Miami Vice" (July 28): Michael Mann oversaw the TV cop show that helped define hip ‘80s style and music. Now he’s got Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as his smooth new undercover cops as they take on Miami drug runners.

* Underworld Evolution" (Jan. 20): Kate Beckinsale’s back as the vampire in black, whose war with rival werewolves grows more complicated when she learns she has been betrayed by her bloodsucking kin.

SOUNDS PROMISING

* The Pink Panther" (Feb. 10): If there’s an actor alive who maybe, possibly could resurrect Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau without bumbling his way to oblivion, it has to be Steve Martin. Martin stars as the idiot savant French detective in a crime caper co-starring the actor’s old pal Kevin Kline as Clouseau’s long-suffering boss, along with Beyonce Knowles and Jean Reno.

* Lady in the Water" (July 21): M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense," "Signs") spins another strange one, about a building super (Paul Giamatti) who discovers a water nymph (Bryce Dallas Howard) living in the tunnels beneath the apartment complex’s swimming pool.

Red carpet winners, losers
By LINDSEY WARD -- Winnipeg Sun
Hollywood's top designers must have held a seance prior to last night's Golden Globes.

Either that or they spent hours watching every Marilyn Monroe flick imaginable -- since the late sexy starlet's style seemed to be the inspiration behind many red carpet-strutting actresses' fashion choices. From Natalie Portman's lingerie-inspired Chanel gown to Anne Hathaway's red-hot lips, the plush stretch leading to the Beverly Hilton was flooded with vintage couture. The leading men also adopted the retro look, mostly via classic black-and-white tuxedos. Cleavage took a backseat to modest necklines and ultra-low backlines, which in Hilary Swank's case, nearly dipped below sea level.

Forget who won what. Here's a look at who wore what -- and wore it well.

 BEST DRESSED MAN

Johnny Depp gets the prize for being the hottest of a rare few actors to ditch the penguin look. Usually the outcast of the bunch, Depp stood out in a good way, donning a red shirt under a simple black suit, just-got-out-of-bed hair and a statuesque model wife on his arm. That's haute.

Veteran actor Christopher Lee has criticised the new wave of young Hollywood stars, claiming they are chosen for their looks rather than their talent.

Movie bosses prize beauty and youth over acting experience, with often disastrous results, he said. "The problem today is that there are quite large numbers of very young men and women - boys and girls to me - from 18 to 30, and they are playing very large parts in huge films and they simply, through no fault of their own, don't have the background and the experience and the knowledge to pull if off," the 83-year-old screen legend lamented on Terry Wogan's new TV chatshow yesterday.

The actor, who was recently named as Hollywood's most marketable star of 2005 in a new poll by USA Today, added, "It's dangerous for them because if they are in one failure after another, sooner or later people are going to say, 'well, he may have a pretty face but he's not bringing the public in'."

He revealed that he had considered quitting the industry because of falling standards. "I have said to my wife 'why do I bother anymore?'. Showbusiness has changed so much. When I started all the technicians wore a suit and shirt and a tie," he said, and added that nowadays, "the people who make the decisions and give you the part or put up the money for the production are very amateurish."

The only young actor Lee did find praise for was Johnny Depp. The pair have co-starred together in three films, most recently Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Lee said: "The number one actor in the world as far as I'm concerned is Johnny Depp. He's not afraid of a challenge, he's not afraid of anything."

Lee was filming an appearance for Wogan's new chat show Wogan Now And Then, which begins on UKTV Gold on January 24.

Tom Hanks Again Reigns as America's Favorite Movie Star
Thursday January 19, 4:26 pm ET
Johnny Depp Jumps to #2 and John Wayne is #3
(excerpt)
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Once again we have asked U.S. adults to choose their favorite movie stars, and for the second year in a row, Tom Hanks has emerged as America's favorite. Johnny Depp moves up from #4 to #2 this year, while John Wayne, who died over 25 years ago, and Harrison Ford are tied at #3. Rounding out the top five is Julia Roberts (#5).

These are the results of a nationwide poll of 1,001 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive® between December 8 and 14, 2005.

Consistency in the top 10 seems to be the rule of thumb for this year's list, as nine of the 10 stars in this year's list were also on last year's list, though their rankings have been shuffled a bit. Some of these changes include:

    - Mel Gibson drops five places this year from #2 to #7. This excludes him
from the top five for the first time since 1994.
    - John Wayne continues to have a large and loyal fan base, as he moves up
four places, from #7 to tied for #3.
    - Julia Roberts drops two places from #3 to #5. This year she is not the
only woman in the top 10 as Sandra Bullock, who last appeared on the
list in 2002, returns at #10.
    - George Clooney and Clint Eastwood both moved up two places this year
       -- Eastwood from #8 to #6 and Clooney from #10 to #8.

Aside from Tom Hanks remaining at #1, the only other movie star to retain their position from 2004 is Sean Connery, who remains at #9.

Gender and race appear to play a role in deciding a favorite. John Wayne is tops among men, while women choose Tom Hanks. Denzel Washington retains his #1 position among African Americans, while Hispanics are divided between Mel Gibson and Katherine Hepburn as their favorite.

Political ideology also appears to be a factor in choosing a favorite movie star. Conservatives pick Tom Hanks and John Wayne as their favorites, while liberals choose Johnny Depp. Region is another factor. While those in the East, Midwest and West all stick with Tom Hanks as their favorite movie star, Southerners go outside of the top 10, choosing Brad Pitt (who comes in at #11 overall) as their favorite.

The last time I checked, there are about 655 awards shows on television. But only a handful are really worth watching. The Golden Globes is usually one of ‘em. That’s because when you have big name stars and free booze in the same room, well, you never know what might happen.

But Monday’s shindig was a mostly ho-hum affair. The Globes felt more like the Oscars than the freewheeling party it‘s been in past years. There were some exceptions, however. George Clooney’s crack about recently indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff was standard Clooney. Geena Davis’ funny fib about a young girl telling how her Commander in Chief character inspired her to become president was priceless. Grey’s Anatomy’s Sandra Oh looked truly stunned and excited when she won and Mary-Louise Parker left everyone’s jaw on the ground when she blabbed that she wanted to make out with her castmates on Weeds.

What, no Libertine?

Late last year, The Weinstein Company released The Libertine, Lawrence Dunmore's long-awaited, unrated, Johnny Depp-starring staging of the wine-soaked life and syphillis-stoked death of the Earl of Rochester, for one week for academy consideration. The plan, according to a Weinstein rep that we spoke to in November, was to then put the film back in theaters in January. But its initial re-release date was yesterday, and, needless to say, it's hardly playing at a theater near you.

Coming Soon still has The Libertine listed as a January TBA release, but there's not a hint of a release date on the film's official site. I couldn't get anyone on the phone at Weinstein yesterday, but it seems pretty clear what's going on here: Depp has thus far failed to earn any significant nominations, and the film made not a single notable critic's list, and so the distributor assumes there's no financial incentive to give it a wide release. Do you think this is valid? It's not a great picture, but it is worth seeing, and one would imagine that Depp could draw a reasonable audience to anything. Johnny Depp superfans, rise up in revolt!

Johnny Depp reveals favourite wine
January 17, 2006
Oliver Styles

Hollywood star Johnny Depp has revealed his favourite wine.

In an interview with Madame Figaro magazine Depp said that Château Calon-Ségur, a Saint-Estèphe third-growth, was his top tipple.

'It's a marvellous wine that you can drink every day and it's also very affordable,' he said.

The actor, who reportedly earned €18m (£10m) for his role in last year's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, also revealed that his tastes reached the more expensive end of the fine wine spectrum.

'I like Pétrus [and] Château Cheval-Blanc,' he said. He also name checked Domaine de la Romanée-Conti as one of his favourite Burgundy estates.

Enthusing over his selection he said, 'with those wines, you reach nirvana.'

Depp, who lives with French singer Vanessa Paradis and spends six months a year in France, is known for his love of French wines.

He met fellow oenophile, Liccy Dahl, widow of Roald, in the UK two years ago. Dahl, whose late husband wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remembers the meeting.

'He invited me into his trailer for a glass of wine,' said Dahl. 'I was astonished to find he had two bottles of Cos d'Estournel sitting on his desk – a 1989 and a 1990.'

Depp also sports a tattoo proclaiming 'Wino forever', although the original wording was 'Winona forever' – a relic from previous girlfriend, actress Winona Ryder.

The Life staff weighs in on the highs — and lows — of The Golden Globes. Next stop: The Academy Awards!
By Dana Oland, Brenda Gutierrez, Emily Simnitt, Niki Forbing-Orr, Jeanne Huff
The Idaho Statesman | Edition Date: 01-18-2006

We came. We saw. We laughed. We cried.

Yes, it's awards season, folks, and we here in the Life section are loving it. This is the time we can unabashedly gawk at — AND DISH — our fair celebs.

Oh, celebs, we love to see you there on the red carpet in your satin, sequined, strapless gowns, swishing and sashaying down the aisles (or in Sandra Oh's case, hopping and whooping around like a Keystone cop, plundering her way to the stage).

After all, we try to peer into your lives all year only to get a glimpse here and there, an item in US Weekly, maybe. (C'mon, what else are you supposed to do in line at the grocery story?) But on the awards shows, we get to gaze at you full-on. For hours. And we get to listen to your pithy, witty eloquence (or not) in your oh-so-planned and rehearsed acceptance speeches.

So here's our take on the Golden Globes, one of our guilty pleasures we don't feel a bit guilty about.
Best dressed man

Dana: Lot's of nice tuxes to chose from, but I liked Jamie Foxx. He learned from last year after he was criticized (at least in this paper) as too casual for the event. This year he pulled it together with a snappy black suit and tie and dark purple shirt.

Brenda: So many men to choose from ... John Travolta, Kiefer Sutherland and James Denton were among my favorites. And Patrick Dempsey looked great, too, but I have a hard time getting past his nerdy roll in "Can't Buy Me Love."

Emily: I loved Johnny Depp's red shirt and sexily floppy hair. But then, I always love Johnny Depp.

Niki: I have to say that Johnny Depp gets my vote here. He looked very handsome and casual in his black suit and red shirt ... no tie. He was a standout compared to all of the other men who were wearing black and white or dark and white.

Jeanne: (SPOILER ALERT: HUBBY BOB, DON'T READ THIS.) Oh, Johnny Depp. Please peer at me (eyebrow raised jauntily) through your horn-rimmed glasses and toss your tousled locks my way. Pretty, pretty please

Hollywood gold wears it well
By Karen Heller
KRT News Service

Hollywood celebrated its fabulousness Monday night at the 63rd annual Golden Globe Awards with loaned gowns, borrowed bibelots the size of cell phones, acres of swag (a cruise to Antarctica!), and hectares and hectares of self-love.

The Globes, determined by 86 junket-junkie foreign scribes who never met a breakfast buffet they didn't love, is the self- proclaimed "party of the year" that's loose and lively and far more fun than its stuffy older sister, the Oscars, and far more hip than its superficial cousin, the Emmys.

Some men, though, can get away with being different. Johnny Depp dug deeper into his pirate Deppness, wearing an open-necked red shirt that harked back to disco. He can get away with this, being Johnny Depp and living in France and all.

LIBERTINE IN LINE FOR OSCAR?
THE Libertine is in line to give the Island its first Oscar nomination, for make-up.
The Academy Awards have revealed the long list of seven films which will be whittled down to three when the nominations proper are announced on January 31.

The £13 million movie, starring Johnny Depp and John Malkovich, was shot in Island Studios, Ramsey, in April 2004.

However, given the size and quality of the films it is up against, with The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Cinderella Man, The History of Violence, The New World and Mrs Henderson Presents, it will do well just to make the final three nominations.

Directed by Laurence Dunmore, The Libertine is the story of John Wilmot (Depp), also known as the Earl of Rochester, a 17th century poet who was a friend and confidant of King Charles II.

He famously drank and partied his way to an early grave, only to earn posthumous critical acclaim for his life's work.

Big Bat-Rumors

Posted Jan 12th 2006 10:06PM by Mark Beall
Filed under: Action & Adventure, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels

Those of you who are regular readers of Cinematical are already fully aware of the ever-revolving rumor mill regarding the two major Bat-villians for the upcoming Begins sequel. Well, over at moviehole a "fly on the wall" has dropped some rather interesting information into the increasingly odd mix. First, we'll start with the Joker, as it seems like every actor in Hollywood is interested in the part. Their fly confirms the popularity of the part, but indicates that the studio (with the very excited blessing of Nolan himself) are interested in bringing on a VERY big name for the role. Rumor has it that said name says he may be interested, if the script is right. Who, you ask? Well the fly puts it this way:

"Let’s just say that he has a major film coming out this summer and it’s a sequel to one of his biggest hits. In fact, his performance in the first movie was nominated for an Oscar."

The first name that leaps to mind given that description is of course Johnny "Captain Jack" Depp, who would be quite a big name indeed. His name has been tossed about the casting rumor before, but never with any legitimacy.

Second rumor regards a femme-fatale character, who would be making her first appearance in Batman film history. Let's turn to the fly for the scoop and the casting rumor:

Regarding the character- "she has a very close connection with a major character in Nolan’s first Batman movie. She will be out for revenge against Bruce Wayne and Gotham in a major way."

Regarding the actress- "let’s just say that she is nominated for a SAG, a Golden Globe and is on her way to an Oscar nomination as well. She is also in fact five months pregnant and will be in tip top fighting shape once production begins to roll early next year but not before she throws a few coins in a fountain."

When I first read pregnant I thought "dear Lord not the Tomb Raider," but then the rest of the words in the description processed and I realized that Rachel Weisz is probably the call here.

Wow, okay. Thoughts? At first, I was rather hesitant about the Depp call, simply because I was afraid his presence may be too large, taking the audience out of the experience- seeing not the Joker, but Johnny Depp AS the Joker. Further thought leads me to conclude that I'm drastically underselling Depp's talent as an actor, and I settled on concluding that the man would be an excellent casting choice. As for Rachel Weisz- I think she's a talented actress, but I'm not sure what part they are angling for with her, so I don't have as much to say about it. Bat-fans out there have any thoughts on this?

Depp to star as The Ginger Man
15 January 2006 By Ros Drinkwater
(excerpt)
Johnny Depp is reputedly to play the hero in the first ever film version of JP Donleavy's iconic novel The Ginger Man.  Rated one of the 100 best books of the 20th century and never out of print since its publication in 1955, it recounts the ribald adventures of Sebastian Balfe Dangerfield, an Irish American law student at Trinity College. Due to its content Donleavy had great difficulty finding a publisher.

When it was finally published by Olympia Press in Paris, it caused outrage and delight in equal amounts and was critically hailed as a masterpiece.  For half a century Donleavy has repeatedly spurned Hollywood overtures to film his books.  His decision to relent is due in no small part to the casting of  Depp, whom he met recently in New York.

“Mr Depp is something else,” he said with characteristic understatement. “He is very bright, extremely intelligent, and very knowledgeable.”

The film will be directed by Laurence Dunmore, who directed Depp in The Libertine, and produced by Philip Donleavy and Robert Mitchell.

Shane McGowan will appear as Brendan Behan, a close friend of Donleavy's and the first person to read the original manuscript.

To date The Ginger Man has sold over 50 million copies in 20 languages.

Bruckheimer Says 3 May Not be the End of Pirates
Author: Robert Sanchez

With Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest set to release July 7, 2006 and the third one to be on its way shortly thereafter will that mark the end of Captain Jack?

In Pirates 2, Captain Jack Sparrow discovers he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife. Making matters worse, Sparrow's problems manage to interefere with the wedding plans of a certain Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who are forced to join Jack on yet another one of his misadventures.

We await news of Pirates 3, rumors and speculation is all there is right now including the title Pirates of the Caribbean: Unchartered Waters. But again those are rumors for now and we shall see!

But will this be the end of Captain Jack?

According to Jerry Bruckheimer he hopes to continue to stories further. At a recent junket for his upcoming release Glory Road, the story of the 1966 Texas Western Basketball team, Bruckheimer expressed his interest in continuing the Pirates franchise. If it were up to him he would continue doing more.

Only time will tell!

Exclusive: Tim Burton & Johnny Depp Team For 'Sweeney Todd'
By Andrew Hartman, MovieMusicals.net
Status: Rumor From Valid Sources

According to anonymous sources, director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp, who together have worked on five major motion pictures including 'Edward Scissorhands' and more recently 'Charlie & the Chocolate Factory,' will team once more for the upcoming movie musical adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's 'Sweeney Todd.'

Depp will portray title character Sweeney Todd - the demon barber or Fleet Street - who slits the throats of his innocent (and not-so-innocent) customers.

As of last year, Sam Mendes ('Road to Perdition,' 'Jarhead') was rumored to be the frontrunner to direct, however he left the project shortly after 'Jarhead' opened in theatres.

It is unknown if Burton will opt to use the existing John Logan screenplay adaptation, or start from scratch.  Therefore, a release date cannot be predicted at this time.

'Sweeney Todd' first opened on Broadway in 1979 which starred Len Cariou, Angela Lansbury, Victor Garber, and Ken Jennings.  The show is currently on Broadway in its second revival, starring Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris.  The show features a score by legendary composer Stephen Sondheim who in his career has earned eight Tony awards, including Best Score for 'Sweeney Todd.'

An official announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

The legendary barber, hell-bent on revenge, takes up with his enterprising neighbor in a delicious plot to slice their way through London's upper crust. Justice will be served - along with lush melody, audacious humor and bloody good thrills.

The musical premiered in 1979, when it won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. The show is currently on Broadway in its second revival. You can learn more about the musical at the official website.

Johnny Depp hyperventilates when he watches his own movies. The star revealed: "I don't watch my films. Last year in France Ed Wood came on television and it was dubbed in French and it was so surreal. So I watched about 10 minutes of it and that's all. Then another time Gilbert Grape came on. I saw the opening credits and then the opening scene - and then I started to hyperventilate and I just shut the TV off and walked away."

The actor also admitted once he has stopped filming his part in a movie he doesn't like seeing the finished product. He added to Britain's Loaded magazine: "I always figured that once I'm wrapped on a film, once my job is done, then anything beyond that is none of my business."

The Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley action-adventure, again helmed by Gore Verbinski, barely defeated director Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, which received 26% of the votes. It's interesting to note that these two films will be released in theaters just a week apart, with "Superman" flying in on June 30 and "Pirates" sailing in on July 7. HOLLYWOOD -- The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language describes a Casanova as a "man who is amorously and gallantly attentive to women" and as a "promiscuous man; a philanderer." Both definitions are based on the overheated life of Giovanni Jacopo Casanova de Seingalt, an Italian adventurer who lived 1725-98 and vividly wrote about his conquests of beautiful women.

Given the subject matter, it's no surprise that Casanova and various womanizers have long been a popular subject in literature, plays and films.

Johnny Depp

The popular actor vividly illustrates both sides of the philandering coin in two distinctly different films.

In the 1995 "Don Juan DeMarco," Depp captures both the comedic elements and poignancy of his character -- a young mental patient who believes he is the greatest lover in the world.

Depp travels to the lower depths in "The Libertine," which opens Jan. 13. As the famed rake the Earl of Rochester, Depp creates a truly depraved hedonist whose hard-living and -loving ways literally eat away at him like a cancer.

Is Johnny Depp The Most Loved Person In Hollywood?
Of course he is...

By: Lowri Williams on 1/4/2006
The lovely Johnny Depp has been voted the most popular star in Hollywood for the second year running.

Despite the fact that Depp is now very much settled in France with his partner Vanessa Paradis and their two children. Depp beat off Brad Pitt and others to take the top spot.

The poll, conducted by IMDB.com has revealed that Depp was the most searched for person on their database during 2005.

Depp starred in the new version of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, a film that obviously made more impact then all the Pitt/Jolie/Aniston rumours.

You can check him out  as Captain Jack Sparrow in the new 'Pirates Of The Carribean' film which will be out later this year.

Depp on the button as top film icon
STEPHEN MCGINTY

IN 2005 he wowed audiences as the world's most famous chocolate factory owner and fired his friend's ashes out of a $1 million cannon. Now Johnny Depp's eccentric personality has been recognised with the accolade of most popular film icon of 2005.

The star of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, who in the past led a turbulent private life which involved dating Kate Moss and trashing the odd hotel room, has topped the list of the most fascinating film stars in Hollywood, according to the International Movie Database website ( www.imdb.com .

The 42-year-old actor received the most hits among the tens of thousands of actors covered by the movie website. The highest-ranking British film star was Keira Knightley, who came eighth and was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Elizabeth Bennet in the film adaptation of Pride & Prejudice.

Daniel Radcliffe, the star of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, saw his co-star, Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger, beat him in the ratings. She was ranked 15th, while he was 18th.

It is the second year in a row that Depp has been voted No1 on IMDB's "star-o-meter" list.

Last year was an exceedingly good one for the actor who has risen from independent movies to the Hollywood A list, and who now lives in rural France with his wife, Vanessa Paradis, and two children, Jack and Lily-Rose.

He began the year with an Oscar nomination for Finding Neverland - about the Scots playwright J M Barrie - before going on to enthral millions with his idiosyncratic interpretation of Willy Wonka in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton.

He also lent his voice to another Tim Burton movie, Corpse Bride, and filmed back-to-back sequels for Pirates Of The Caribbean, the first of which will be released this summer.

Depp was also a close friend of Hunter S Thompson, the journalist for Rolling Stone magazine, whose novel Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas was turned into a movie in which Depp portrayed Thompson. When Thompson committed suicide last year, Depp arranged a huge memorial service at the journalist's farm in Colorado and paid for a $1 million cannon to blast his friend's ashes into the air.

Depp has said that shunning the limelight and settling down has "done wonders for my relationship with Hollywood". He said: "I don't know who's famous. I don't know who's not famous. So, I come in just completely ignorant of all of it and it feels really good. Because then I don't have to think about anything but my work."

Brian Pendreigh, the film critic and author of a number of film books, was not surprised Depp topped the poll. He said: "He has had a very good year. His Willy Wonka was a smash hit, he voiced Corpse Bride, and he gave an excellent performance in The Libertine."

Last weekend it was also announced that Depp is in negotiations to buy the film rights to the novel, The People's Act of Love, set during the Russian Revolution and written by James Meek, a former Scotsman journalist.

Other stars to make the top 20 include Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, collectively known as "Brangelina". The couple, who starred in Mr & Mrs Smith and whose private lives consumed acres of newsprint throughout the year, make it to Nos 2 and 3 in the list respectively. Pitt's former wife, Jennifer Aniston, leaped from 16 to 12 after weathering her divorce with dignity and starring in Derailed and Rumour Has It.

Perhaps surprisingly, Tom Cruise came in at only No7, with more folk interested in his relationship with actress Katie Holmes than his role in last summer's movie War Of The Worlds. In a further blow, he was named the most irritating star an Empire magazine poll.

Depp in film deal talks over Scots author
ROSIE McINTOSH   January 02 2006
Johnny Depp has shown interest in acquiring the film rights to a book written by a man who grew up in Dundee.
The actor's production company, Infinitum Nihil, is in talks with AP Watt, the agent of author James Meek, about his Siberian novel, The People's Act of Love.

The book, which has been described as Kafkaesque, was published by Canongate in Edinburgh, and has been a great success since its release in July.

Meek, who also writes for the Guardian newspaper, said Canongate was not directly involved in selling the film rights, adding: "There have been discussions between my agents and Johnny Depp's production company. If I can agree satisfactory terms I think it would be good for the book to be made into a film.

"But it is too early to say what is going to happen – many books are optioned but not made into films."
It is not known how much the impending film deal would be worth, but a similar deal by Depp involving the rights to Nick Hornby's novel, A Long Way Down, was reported to have made £2m.

Depp's novel approach to Scotland

HOLLYWOOD superstar Johnny Depp is poised to buy the film rights to a Scottish author's critically acclaimed novel.

The actor, known for his versatility and love of British culture, is in negotiations with Canongate publishers to acquire an option on James Meek's Siberian classic The People's Act of Love.

The deal, which is yet to be finalised, will give Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, sole rights to any film adaptation of the acclaimed epic.

As yet no actors have been approached to star in a film but it has been likened to a Siberian Apocalypse Now with a possible pairing of Depp and Russell Crowe.

Last night, Canongate owner Jamie Byng refused to discuss further details until a contract had been signed. But he said: "We are in discussions. It is pretty much agreed."

How much the deal is worth depends on whether Depp goes on to produce the film. At this stage it is more likely to be a modest sum in the region of thousands, but a similar deal by Depp involving the rights to Nick Hornby's novel A Long Way Down was reported to have made £2m.

Depp's interest in a Scottish book is in keeping with his love affair with British culture.

He took part in an episode of The Fast Show in 2000 after declaring he was a big fan. He also played slide guitar on the Oasis song 'Fade In-Out' from their 1997 album Be Here Now.

Depp founded his own movie production company in 2004 to develop projects for which he is expected to either star in or produce. So far it has announced three films, including the adaptation of Hornby's novel.

Depp's involvement with The People's Act of Love also signals a meteoric rise for the novel which has already been translated into 20 different languages despite hitting the shelves just five months ago.

Set in a remote Siberian village in 1919, the novel recounts the confused and bloody years of the civil war that followed the revolutions of 1917.

Stranded in the village is a marooned legion of Czechoslovakian troops keeping the peace and awaiting its fate at the hands of the advancing Red Army. Living nearby is an extreme Christian sect who have castrated themselves to be closer to God.

The equilibrium of this isolated community is disturbed when a local shaman is found murdered and a fugitive from a labour camp turns up, pursued by a cannibal.

At this stage it is not clear whether Depp, who recently drew massive box office takings with his dark portrayal of Willy Wonka, would star in any film adaptation.

But his convincing portrayal of the Earl of Rochester in The Libertine has led some critics to suggest that he could play either the role of the flamboyant revolutionary Russian Samarin or the megalomaniac commander of the Czech regiment Captain Matula.

Film journalist Brian Pendreigh said: "It is a complicated novel that reminds me of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now which was based on Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness. There is a small section of Siberia which is ruled by the leader of the Czechoslovakian regiment named Matula. One can draw parallels with Marlon Brando's Colonel Kurtz.

"There are two main roles one is Samarin, the Russian soldier, I presume that is the role that Johnny Depp would play. The other is Matula which could be played by Russell Crowe or perhaps Christopher Walken. The female character Anna Petrovna would be ideal for Keira Knightley."

Since its publication in July the novel has received impeccable reviews, with one critic likening it to Kafka. Military historian Antony Beevor described it as an "exceptional event in English literature", while Phillip Pullman said it was "a quite extraordinary novel".

Marc Lambert, chief executive of the Scottish Book Trust, said it showed Scottish writers are doing something of world interest. He said: "I am not surprised that Johnny Depp, who is quite a cultured person, has his ear to the ground, does read and is interested in good writing, would be interested in this book. It is a complex tale to bring to the big screen but if there is anybody that can handle multiple characterisations that are necessary then I think Johnny Depp is a good one to try.

"Although there is a love story at the heart of the book I find it difficult to see it being translated into a big Hollywood blockbuster type movie. If it did get made into a film it would be best made as a European rather than a Hollywood film and of course Johnny Depp is well placed to do that."

Yesterday Meek said that he didn't have a film in mind when he set about writing the book but hoped the novel could inspire another art form.

He said: "My feeling about books and films generally is that they are different artefacts. The book is a book and the film is a film. It is possible to have a bad book made into a good film or a good book made into a bad film.

"One thing that the novelist generally does not like to think is that they are writing something that is somehow a preface to a work of art in a different medium which is going to deface their own work.

"But having said that, of course, if one work of art can provide an inspiration to another related but different work of art then that is a good thing."

Meek, who was born in London but grew up in Dundee, has published two novels, Mcfarlane Boils The Sea and Drivetime, and two collections of short stories, Last Orders, and most recently, The Museum Of Doubt. A former staff reporter with The Scotsman, Meek left the newspaper in 1991 to work in the former Soviet Union, where he established himself as a foreign correspondent with The Guardian.

Yesterday a spokesman for Infinitum Nihil was unavailable for comment.

Johnny Depp tops IMDb search poll
Friday, December 30 2005, 19:31 GMT -- by Fiona Edwards

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has come top of a poll of the most-searched names on the internet movie site, IMDb.com.

Depp's biography and filmography were the highest-sought pages on the site, beating both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt closely. Rachel McAdams (em>The Notebook) and Jessica Alba (The Fantastic Four) were notable newcomers to this poll, coming in at 17 and 6 respectively, while Napoleon Dynamite star Jon Heder and Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria entered at 19 and 22.

"The STARmeter reflects actual public interest in an individual celebrity. This list captures a snapshot in time of just how much attention these stars attracted," says Keith Simanton, IMDb.com's managing editor.

"It's also interesting to see who tumbled out of the top 25 this year - a list that includes Jennifer Garner, who was on maternity leave for a good portion of the year; Viggo Mortensen, who needed more than a History Of Violence to keep his Aragorn standing of No 23 last year; and Halle Berry, whose Catwoman turn last year kept her in the spotlight at No 19 but who is at No 63 this year."

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

THEY SAY: "It is a continuing story over both films, but you'll definitely have an end at the end of part two. The story will pick up again in part three. We hope that we can do it as well as Lord Of The Rings. That's what we're aiming for. We've got everyone back, even some surprise guests whom I can't mention. I'm very excited - we've moved things on, with a bigger budget, more special effects, but trying to keep that energy and humour that made the original so special."
JERRY BRUCKHEIMER, PRODUCER

YOU SAY: I'm very very excited about this sequel and really hope they don't c**k it up. They shouldn't, though - not with good ol' Johnny on board (excuse the pun.) He was so fab in the first, I'd go if it was just two hours of him!
CLARABELL, VIA EMPIRE ONLINE

WE SAY: While there's always a fear that the goofy charm of the original Pirates may be lost amidst the kitchen-sinkitis that scuppers many sequels, we're confident that this can deliver. The teaser trailer suggests that Depp has bottled lightning again, whilst the plot - which sees Jack Sparrow try to repay a blood debt to Bill Nighy's fishy Davy Jones, while the East India Company hunts down pirates - should allow plenty of room for swashbuckling and screwball comedy. And if those 'surprise guests' don't include one Mr. K. Richards, our timbers will be well and truly shivered.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - I loved the first movie so much that I saw it twice in one week, paying both times, and I've probably seen it another half dozen times since then. There aren't many movies that are perfect, but I've yet to find anything I didn't like about the original "Pirates" and with Gore Verbinski back at the helm and all of the cast returning, this should be just as much fun.
