Depp acquires NJ scribe's film option
Sunday, December 31, 2006
By BILL ERVOLINO
RECORD STAFF

Bloomsbury books has announced that Johnny Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, along with Initial Entertainment Group, have finalized a film option agreement for "The Affected Provincial's Companion" by Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy -- the pen name of Victor Allen Crawford III, who lives in the rural Pine Barrens town of New Egypt.

Crawford's book, released in the United States and United Kingdom in September, is an eccentric, humorous and slightly bittersweet autobiographical account of the author's life as a reclusive dandy and country gentleman. The book was typeset, art-directed, designed and illustrated by "Lord Whimsy," complete with unusual charts and diagrams.

What is not known is whether Depp -- who has played several left-of-center characters in recent films -- will produce the film, star in it or both.

Johnny Depp slated to play Freddie Mercury in new biopic

Johnny Depp is in talks to star as Freddie Mercury in a film being developed by Robert de Niro's Tribeca Productions, according to The [London] Independent.

Queen guitarist Brian May confirmed on his Web site that "discussions are at an early stage."

The film would cover the life of Mercury, the former Queen front man, who was born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar. Mercury wrote many of the band's hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," which was voted Britain's best single of all time, beating out John Lennon's "Imagine." He was known for his distinctive voice and wide vocal range.

Mercury died at age 45 in 1991 of AIDS complications, one day after announcing he had the disease.

PIRATED OF THE CARIBBEAN

BLOCKBUSTER film Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is the top-selling fake DVD this Christmas.

The industry's anti-piracy organisation FACT said they seized more counterfeit copies of the Johnny Depp movie than any other title this year.

It came top of their list, ahead of films including Mission: Impossible III, Cars, The Da Vinci Code and Casino Royale.

FACT's Eddy Leviten said "tens of thousands" of pirate DVDs had recently been seized, but there were "hundreds of thousands" still out there.

He added: "Pirated films mirror the box office because criminals benefit from marketing provided by film studios.

"Lots of children will receive the pirated version for Christmas."

Johnny Depp thinks being "weird" is normal!

By ANI
Friday December 29, 12:58 PM

Washington, Dec 29 (ANI): If there's one actor who doesn't mind being labelled "weird", it would be Johnny Depp, for he thinks that being different is kind of normal.

Depp, who is known for taking on roles of eccentric characters such as Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka and the most recent Captain Jack Sparrow, insists that playing such roles has helped him discover himself.

"I was given the weird badge but I think everybody's weird and that's the key to it. We should celebrate out individuality, not be embarrassed or ashamed of it. We all have idiosyncrasies," Hollywoodrag.com quoted him, as saying.

The actor also believes that people who don't explore their weirdness are doing themselves a "great disservice", for they are the ones who become too conscious of others' opinions.

"People do themselves a great disservice by not allowing themselves to see who they really are because they are afraid of what others might think," he added.

Depp, who will once again be seen on the big screen when he returns as quirky pirate Captain Jack Sparrow in the third and final part of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' trilogy, has been preparing for his role as demonic barber Sweeney Todd by practicing his razor skills at home, and is spending hours on end pretending to cut imaginary throats.

"Johnny is always very conscientious in his roles. For this part he has to get into the mind of a serial killer. He wants to feel adept with the razor blades, to feel as if they were an extension of his arm," a source revealed.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' hits theatres around the world on May 25, 2007.

Blockbuster ensures Hollywood will finish '06 with modest gains
The Associated Press
Dec 29, 2006

LOS ANGELES - In the real world, Hollywood's on the warpath to fight movie pirates who bootleg films. On screen, the town kind of owes its business turnaround in 2006 to a gang of pirates led by Johnny Depp.

If not for the $423 million domestic haul of Depp's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," Hollywood would have been dead-even with its results of 2005, the worst year for movie admissions in almost a decade.

"One movie can make the difference, not only with a box-office boost but a psychological boost for Hollywood," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

Led by the "Pirates" sequel and such hits as "X-Men: The Last Stand," "Cars," "Happy Feet" and "Ice Age: The Meltdown," studios managed a solid if far from spectacular year.

The industry should finish the year with about $9.3 billion in domestic revenue, up 4.2 percent from 2005, Dergarabedian projected. Factoring in higher ticket prices, admissions should come in at 1.43 billion, up 2.6 percent.

That compares with a 5 percent decline in revenue and 8 percent drop in admissions in 2005 from the year earlier.

"Moviegoing is alive and well," said Jeff Blake, vice chairman at Sony, which expects to break its own 2002 industry record of $1.57 billion at the domestic box office this year from the success of such hits as "The Da Vinci Code" and "Casino Royale."

"I think we gave enough variety this year where we served the entire audience. There were the usual young-male hits, . . . and maybe a few extra family movies. But we also had adult blockbusters like 'Da Vinci Code,' 'Devil Wears Prada' and 'The Departed.'"

Through much of 2005, Hollywood was hit with ongoing criticism that its lineup lacked fire and that audiences had grown blasé about movies, turning to video games, home theaters and other entertainment options.

Studio executives say last year's troubles were magnified by incessant headlines about the box-office slump.

"Once a negative vibe gets started and everyone gets on the bandwagon, you're basically challenging the audience to find something worth going to see," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution at Disney, which released "Pirates of the Caribbean." This year, maybe the product lineup isn't any different. Maybe the messages we sent were more compelling."

The negative talk has largely vanished as studios delivered a string of successes and relatively few bombs.

Underachievers were offset by a few unexpected $100-million hits that included "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," "The Devil Wears Prada" and "The Break-Up."

While business rose in 2006, Hollywood has not caught up with where it was two years ago. Domestic revenue is off 1 percent compared with 2004's, while attendance is down 6 percent.

A turnaround could come in 2007, whose summer lineup may be led by "Spider-Man 3," "Shrek the Third," another "Pirates of the Caribbean" adventure, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and "Ratatouille," the latest animated tale from Pixar, maker of "Toy Story," "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles."

Officials at the database site said there were a few surprises in this year's rankings.

"There appears to be a perennial, if probably clandestine, fascination with Hilary Duff; her only film of the year was the little-seen 'Material Girls' but she still finds herself at No. 15," said Keith Simanton, managing editor of IMDb.com, in statement. The database is owned by Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN - News).

The biggest celebrity paydays Of 2006
opping the list: Shock jock Howard Stern, who, when he debuted on Sirius Satellite Radio (US:SIRI) Jan. 9, was awarded more than 34 million shares of Sirius stock as a bonus for recruiting an estimated 2.7 million new subscribers to the network. Stern is believed to have collared his stock at their then-value of $5.79 a share, making that bonus (after capital gains taxes) worth $192 million. That's on top of his $500 million, five-year contract with Sirius.

Most of the celebrities on the list enjoyed big payouts thanks to asset sales. In October, sultry actress Ellen Barkin sold $20 million worth of bling she amassed during her five-year marriage to billionaire mogul Ron Perelman. In March, divorced superstars Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt made a combined $12 million profit (which they split) when they sold their five-bedroom Beverly Hills love nest following their divorce. Two months later, ailing boxer Muhammad Ali pocketed $50 million selling his name.

Absent from this list is actor Johnny Depp, who starred in the year's biggest film and is looking forward to a slice of the backend. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest booked $55.8 million on its July 6 opening day, the highest-grossing opening day in movie history. But Depp wouldn't have seen a dime until the film broke even. Plus, it is virtually impossible to ascertain when the studio disburses payouts to its "partners," including director Jerry Bruckheimer. Not that Depp is worried. So far, his take from the film - minus sales of the DVD, which became available only in December - is upwards of $60 million.

Oasis to receive award from Johnny Depp
December 25, 2006

Johnny Depp is to present Oasis with their Outstanding Contribution To Music prize at next year's BRIT Music Awards.

The Hollywood actor will hand over the prestigious accolade to the band - Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer and Andy Bell - at the star-studded ceremony to be held at London's Earls Court on February 14 2007.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Having Johnny Depp there is a massive coup for the organisers. Getting Oasis is amazing enough but they needed to have someone iconic to present the award to them, now they've got that someone. Next year's ceremony is going to be broadcast live so the organisers have gone for huge names to spice it up."

Johnny became friends with guitarist Noel in the 90s after meeting through their then girlfriends Kate Moss, who dated Johnny, and Meg Matthews, who was with Noel.

The pair, along with Liam, became such close pals the Pirates of the Caribbean actor was invited to play slide guitar on the track Fade In-Out which features on Oasis' 1997 album Be Here Now.

Oasis will close the ceremony with a selection of their classic hits. Other acts being lined up to perform include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Scissor Sisters, Take That and Razorlight.

Depp tipped for Freddie Mercury film role
By Louise Jury, Arts Correspondent

He is a keen guitar player whose admiration for the Rolling Stones stretched to modelling his character, the pirate Jack Sparrow, on the mannerisms of Keith Richards.

Now the Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp, is being lined up to play a rock star for real in a biopic of the late Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury.

Robert de Niro's company, Tribeca Productions, is said to be behind the project, which Brian May, the Queen guitarist, confirmed was in development. "Discussions are at an early stage," he said on his website.

May described Depp as "fantastic". "He would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen. I don't think I can say any more right now," he added.

De Niro has known Brian May and Queen's drummer, Roger Taylor, since they met at the Venice Film Festival in 1996 and ploughed his own money into their hit stage musical, We Will Rock You. The musical was originally going to be about the band but the surviving members decided that would be too embarrassing for all involved.

"It would be too painful, too close, and a bit grand. It would be for somebody else to do, you can't supervise your own history," May said at the time.

Instead, Ben Elton, the comedy writer and novelist, devised a story that incorporated the band's back catalogue of songs. When the show opened in London in 2002 after six years in development, De Niro attended the first night. "It's an adventure. I've been involved in this for a long time. It went through a lot of stages and finally got to this stage - it's going to be terrific," he said.

The £7.5m production, which is still running, is set in a future where musical instruments have been banned but a group of rebels go in search of mythical electric guitars.

But the proposed biopic would tell the life story of Mercury, who was born in Zanzibar in 1946 and died from complications of Aids in 1991, the day after confirming he had the disease.

His real name was Farrokh Bulsara but he adopted the name he was best known by at school in India, where he grew up. His family settled in England when he was in his teens. He performed with several bands before co-founding Queen in 1971.

They signed to EMI a year later. His distinctive voice, which ranged across four octaves, was a key factor in their success on songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody. It lasted nearly six minutes and stayed at number one in the UK charts for nine weeks.

It has since been voted Britain's best single of all time by music fans in a Guinness Book of British Hit Singles poll, defeating John Lennon's Imagine and Hey Jude by the Beatles.

Although Mercury had a close friend, Mary Austin, with whom he lived for several years and who inherited his estate, he was fairly open about his homosexuality. He lived with Jim Hutton for the last six years of his life.

Reformed character vs flamboyant showman

* JOHNNY DEPP Born: 9 June 1963 in Kentucky.

Significant other: Vanessa Paradis, the French actress and singer, with whom he has two children.

Reputation: Once accused of selling drugs at his club, The Viper Room, where River Phoenix overdosed and died, he is a reformed family man.

Did you know? He has twice recorded with the band Oasis, including playing lead slide guitar on the track "Fade In-Out" from the album, Be Here Now.

* FREDDIE MERCURY Born: 5 September 1946 in Zanzibar. Died 24 November 1991 in London.

Significant other: Jim Hutton, a hotel barber.

Reputation: A flamboyant showman who had numerous affairs.

Did you know? He was of Indian descent but kept this from most of his fans and rarely mentioned his heritage in interviews. Some friends suggested it was because he feared a racist backlash.

By Thomas K. Arnold, Special for USA TODAY
Reports of the death of DVD are greatly exaggerated, if sales of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest are any indication.

Disney's Dead Man's Chest— the top-grossing movie of the year — sold 10.5 million DVDs as of Monday, the end of its first week in stores. It was the biggest DVD debut this year, the studio reports. Pirates, starring Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, arrived in theaters in July and grossed $423 million.

With 20 million DVDs of Pirates shipped to stores and more than a week till Christmas, the Pirates sequel could be on track to be the top-selling DVD of the year. The year's current top seller is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which has sold about 14 million copies.

The biggest-selling live-action DVD ever is the first Pirates movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, which ultimately sold 18 million units.

Bob Chapek of Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment, Disney's video distribution arm, says the showing makes it "evident that the home entertainment industry continues to flourish."

"Pirates" DVD sails away with record
Tuesday November 28, 04:50AM

LONDON (Hollywood Reporter) - "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" has plundered the UK record books to become the fastest-selling DVD of all time, Disney said Monday.

The second film in the trilogy, which went on sale November 20, sold just short of 1.5 million copies nationwide in its first week of release, accounting for one in four DVDs purchased in this past week.

Disney said demand has been so great that it ordered one million extra copies from its plant in Mexico.

The Johnny Depp smash beat out the previous Week 1 sales record of 1.4 million units set by "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" earlier this year. However, it falls short of the combined VHS/DVD record held by "Titanic", with 2.2 million sales in its first week.

Disney said that if sales continue as they are, the DVD could sell up to three million copies by the end of the year.

The film opened in July, ultimately taking in more than 50 million pounds. It earned $422 million (218 million pounds) in North America.
