This is the Toronto Film Festival catalogue write-up about THE LIBERTINE:"In 1996, the legendary Steppenwolf Theatre Group performed The Libertine by Stephen Jeffreys, a play that so fascinated its lead actor, John Malkovich, that he became determined to bring the story to the big screen. It was to be nearly a decade before he succeeded in producing The Libertine and, in the meantime, he gave his original role – that of the scandalously decadent John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester – to the charismatic Johnny Depp. It is an inspired choice; Depp’s portrayal adroitly combines an unabashed lust for life and sheer drunken hedonism with a deep sense of sorrow, loss and regret.
In fact, the profound sense of internal conflict and wistfulness that Depp brings to his best roles is strongly mirrored in Laurence Dunmore’s vision for the film. The director uses low-level candlelight to give the film both a period feel and a dark, brooding atmosphere. His debauched society borders on the bloated and coarse and London has never looked so simultaneously filthy and glamorous.
The Libertine follows the Earl’s adventures in London, from his passionate romance with a young actress, Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton), to the writing of a scurrilous and scandalous play – which resulted in his banishment for lampooning the monarch, Charles II (Malkovich, in a particularly menacing and effective performance.) We follow the Earl’s inexorable downward spiral as he drinks himself to death – aided greatly by a raging case of syphilis.
Dunmore allows Rochester’s rapier-sharp maxims to drive straight to the heart of hypocritical bourgeois respectability. The Earl is not particularly likeable and is a figure of both our contempt and envy, yet it is the very complexity of his character that allows Depp to move beyond proto-rock star swaggering and endear himself to us. His outward brilliance conceals a deep melancholic understanding that he is an earthy man living in an age devoted to enlightenment. This irony is reflected in the film’s blend of sophisticated scripting and sheer delight in the Earl’s depravity, making The Libertine an irresistible mixture of wit, vulgarity, romance and tragedy."

Mankiewicz, Steven Spielberg, Elizabeth Taylor, Julia Roberts, Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman , Tom Hanks (news), and Johnny Depp.

Finding Neverland is getting a great reaction out here. The first screening of the Miramax film, inspired by the life of J.M. Barrie, who wrote Peter Pan, starring Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Julie Christie, Dustin Hoffman, and Radha Mitchell was held at Bryan Bantry’s Goose Creek. Tears rolled down the cheeks of Richard Meier and Kurt Vonnegut as they watched, and the response was so great that people had to be seated in the aisles. Among the other viewers were Terry Semel, Priscilla Rattazzi, Chris Whittle, Donna Gigliotti, Charles Evans, James Salter, Esther Newburg, and Stella Keitel (daughter of Lorraine Bracco and Harvey Keitel). Julian Schnabel arrived late with his kids, and because he and Depp are friends, the projectionist rewound the film and showed him the first three reels that he had missed. A second screening will be held Sunday at the UA in Southampton, followed by a supper at Savanna’s. Jason Blum, George Brokaw, Michael Mailer, Aby Rosen, Alex von Furstenberg, Frédéric Fekkai, Chris Heinz, Adam Lindemann, Bob Colacello, Jamie Johnson, Fabian Basabe, Gilles Bensimon, Daniel Baker Jr., and Nicolas Berggruen are among those hosting the evening…

From Yahoo News Out of a Variety article:
Distribs eager to pounce on spoils(i.e.,Libertine)
Sun Aug 29, 2004Dana Harris, STAFF
The machinations surrounding Miramax are making its competitors feel like they're getting the chance to be first in line.
With the film fest season kicking into high gear and a number of specialty pics getting buzz, entities like Fox Searchlight, Focus Features and Lions Gate find it's suddenly their moment in the sun.
Says Sony Pictures Classics co-president Tom Bernard: "Miramax drove prices up for years. This changes things dramatically. It opens up the playing field for more companies."
For a decade, Miramax was the company you expected to see at the center of bidding wars and firefights.
If Miramax liked a film, Harvey Weinstein barreled his way to the front of the theater before the credits rolled; if Miramax didn't like a film, his team might leave before the end of the first reel, taking most of the theater's oxygen with them.
Weinstein, along with members of the Miramax acquisitions team, plans to attend Venice, Toronto and other key fall fests.
Miramax contends it's in a buying mode, though rivals seem to be assuming that Harvey and his group will inevitably go into a quiet period.
Miramax does remain deep in discussions with Disney over the company's future. It recently laid off 65 employees and will allow contracts to lapse on many more.
In the meantime, both Miramax and its Dimension unit have trimmed release slates, pushing some films to more remote dates.
Miramax's metamorphosis isn't the only shift in the indie biz.
Like Miramax, these companies have serious challenges. However, all are likely to be among the bidders for Toronto titles like "The Libertine" starring Johnny Depp and John Malkovich or "A Good Woman," with Scarlett Johanssen and Helen Hunt.
At the same time, these distribs are likely to be on the receiving end of some tough questions. The specialty market isn't the same free-for-all that it was a decade ago, when films were oft acquired but then mishandled.
"The stability of a company is very, very important," says Cedric Jeanson, a former Miramax exec who's now president of GreeneStreet Intl., which will sell Sally Potter's "Yes" in Toronto.
"It speaks to the ability to pay and commit to a P&A spend and the clout to do a good job on your film," he says. "When people are doing well, it says what you can expect them to do with your film."
With these companies having issues to sort out, agents and producers are riveted on shingles like Fox Searchlight and Focus -- well-funded outfits with solid track records unhampered by internal drama.
"Fox Searchlight did a hall-of-fame job on 'Napoleon Dynamite,' " says Cinetic Media principal John Sloss. "I'd like to teach it as a case study in business school."
Searchlight also attracts talents like Bill Condon, David O. Russell and Alexander Payne, demonstrating that the company will likely be one of those that picks up the slack left by Miramax. (Until, that is, Weinstein gets back into the groove.)
Focus also gets high marks. Like Miramax, the distributor of "Lost in Translation" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" has its own foreign sales arm, giving it additional marketplace clout.
The potential for spending bigtime makes TriStar a contender, but the studio is advocating an opportunistic acquisitions strategy -- one that could make it initially difficult for TriStar topper Valerie Van Galder to convince sellers of the shingle's commitment.
And while Lions Gate lacks the backing of a major studio, the Jon Feltheimer-led company also stands to benefit from Miramax's travails.
The success of "Open Water" showed that Lions Gate can market and distribute a major release -- something that's become increasingly important for producers who believe their indie pics can attract a wide audience.
Warner Independent Pictures has only three titles under its belt and no breakout hits, the current landscape could offer room and opportunity for it to rev up its motor.
For its part, Paramount Classics will arrive in Toronto with newfound optimism, now that the company is freed from the short leash of former Viacom Entertainment chairman Jonathan Dolgen.
Still, the recent success of smaller indies -- Newmarket Films' "The Passion of the Christ," ThinkFilm's "Spellbound," Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn's "Super Size Me" and Magnolia Pictures' "The Control Room" and "Capturing the Friedmans" -- shows that size doesn't always matter.
That gives them the clout that could convince a seller to give them a shot rather than turn to the corporate comfort of a studio label.
"It's about the eyeballs, not the middlemen," Sloss says. "If there's an audience that's going to see it, there will be people to get it to them."
However Miramax and Harvey, Dimension and Bob ultimately figure out their future, the business has clearly shifted, opening up possibilities for other players.
"Until something's resolved, they're not going to have the same juice in the marketplace," Bernard says.

21 Jump Street - Official Announcement Shows More Extras, But No Depp
Posted by David Lambert
8/29/2004Just a few days ago we brought you news with cover art and extras for 21 Jump Street. Now we have the official announcement in hand, direct from Anchor Bay, filling us in on all the details. The following info comes directly from them:
It all begins here, as baby-faced rookie Officer Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) is assigned to an elite squad of young undercover cops - Judy Hoffs (Holly Robinson Peete), Doug Penhall (Peter DeLuise) and Harry Truman Ioki (Dustin Nguyen) - to infiltrate high schools and fight crime. Frederic Forrest and Steven Williams co-star in this classic first season that also features such guest stars as Jason Priestley, Josh Brolin, David Paymer, Sherilyn Fenn and Blair Underwood in what became Fox's first runaway hit and remains one of the coolest cop shows in TV history!
21 JUMP STREET - SEASON ONE includes all 13 explosive episodes - including the rarely seen two-part premiere - and is now packed with extras that include all-new interviews with stars Holly Robinson Peete, Dustin Nguyen, Steven Williams and series co- creator Stephen J. Cannell and an exclusive audio commentary with star Peter DeLuise.
In case you missed it, there was an additional extra mentioned in there which wasn't announced in time for our previous news item. Here's the complete list of extras (the new item is listed first):
Brand New Interviews With Show Co-Creator Stephen J. Cannell and Stars Holly Robinson Peete, Dustin Nguyen, and Steven Williams
Audio Commentary With Star Peter DeLuise
8-Page Booklet With Liner Notes & Color PhotosAs you can see, series star Johnny Depp isn't participating in the extras on this set. We were unable to reach Anchor Bay for comment on this prior to the weekend; the needed people were out of the office. Some of our readers have written in to tell us that Depp doesn't have fond memories of the show, and that's why he's stayed away from this set. We have no idea whether there's any truth to that; put it in the "rumor" column. We DO know that Depp is VERY busy with 5 or 6 films that he's scheduled to act in over the course of the next year or more. Among those roles are a turn as Willie Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and a return to Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 2. It sounds like he's pretty tied up!
The good news, though, is that the Fox Network's first-ever broadcast series, 21 Jump Street, is making its way to DVD this October 26th, much to the delight of fans of the show. It's hard not to "jump" for joy!
I've gotten multiple news alerts on this story apparently running in several UK papers - about Mackenzie Crooke and it does mention the upcoming POTC sequels HERE

Further Details
Disney has announced plans to release a three-disc edition of Pirates Of The Caribbean this November. I'm afraid that details are still pretty sketchy on this one at the moment, although we can tell you that it will be made up of the standard two-disc set already on the market, along with a bonus disc containing eight new bonus features. The set will be available to own from the 2nd November this year, priced at around $29.99. We'll update this news article with further details shortly, but for now, here's the artwork:

NEW SILK HOUSE IN TOWN - Featuring over 300 high-end silk fabrics, this entertainment industry source is now open to the public.
Hollywood California is home to a new fabric house specializing in high-end, rock and roll silk fabrics for the home. This is not your mother's fabric store!(PRWEB) August 28, 2004 -- Ever wondered why we have so many fashion choices for our person, and so few for our home? So has HYENA (www.hyenaproductions.com), a new fabric house in Hollywood, California.
HYENA was founded on Thomas Huxley’s philosophy that “the secret of genius is to carry the spirit of childhood into maturity." As expected, they cater to the rock-n-roll jet set, or as they insist, “the rock star in us all.” Co-founder and Paramount Pictures alumni, Delight Underwood, insists we are in a rut. “Our mission is to be the Vivienne Westwood of the home. We have long settled for the ordinary without asking why.” Thus, their logo, Never Settle.
The HYENA collection includes over 300 high-end silk fabrics including silk dupioni, silk taffeta, silk velvet and custom silks. While the collection includes plenty of solids, plaids, stripes and flowers, you’ll also find other more eccentric choices. Baby pink polka dots on chocolate silk – YUMMY! And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
But the best part of all? This designer silk is offered every day at 30-60% off of retail.
Primarily in the business of providing silk to the stars, this unorthodox fabric house also features an Artist of the Month, shining the spotlight on someone you might not have heard of before, or maybe someone you love that you thought was overlooked. Artists range from features on Johnny Depp to Charles Bukowski to Tom Waits, written by both well-known and lesser known authors. A real treat.
Today is the first day of HYENA’S annual Labor Day sale offering 10-30% off the latest additions to The Collection.
If you like nice things but you’re bored of Rodeo Drive, get down to Hollywood and get in on Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret – a little online store called HYENA…long frequented by the industry, now open to the public...virtually speaking.
We think you'll like it in the world of HYENA. Have a look around: www.hyenaproductions.com

From the french French Première, August (finally we know who choose JD !)
Yvan Attal, director of the movie Ils se mari rent et eurent beaucoup d'enfants now released in FranceQuestion to Charlotte Gainsbourg : « Did you ask for JD to play your fantasy ? »
Answer : « No »
Yvan : « If it's not him, then who else, I'm asking you ? He doesn't have much to do...Depp drags such a filmography, such an imaginary, he gives an aura to his character. And then, he plays my rival after all.
....I needed more than...peanuts...hm ? »Little reminder here, Yvan and Charlotte, play a married couple...To clear things about the "rival".
Yvan Attal, alone this time, about JD (interview from a French movie's site) :
Why Johnny Depp in the movie ?
« Women must identify with Charlotte so I needed a guy they are able to dream about. Someone who would be beautiful but who doesn't look bloody stupid, manegeable, reassuring, but not only that... Thanks to the movies he made and to his charism, he combines all these qualities. He is just sublime in the movie. »
The official Miramax "Finding Neverland" site still shows Oct. 22, 2004 as the release date, but we're hearing through the Industry that it will not be until Thanksgiving Day (November 25th this year). Stay tuned.

More news about Johnny's production company and a book they've optioned for film HERE
Excerpt- Speaking about the possibilty of him playing the role of Fatty Arbuckle:Last week Johnny Depp's Hollywood-based production company, Infinitum Nihil, optioned the book for a possible film project that it is to develop with a New York-based production company, This Is That.
Mr. Depp said from London that he would not play Fatty. "It would take a hell of a fat suit," he commented. But he said he would be a hands-on producer, at least early on. "Its a period that's the foundation of what we do,'' he said, "and I want to make sure the film stays in the same arena as Jerry's book." He said he could see a padded Philip Seymour Hoffman playing Arbuckle .

Stars' club feat

Online Staff, STAFF
Only a few months after opening its doors, the Viper Room became infamous when River Phoenix died of a drug overdose on the sidewalk outside the Sunset Strip venue in 1993. This was to be the first of many scandalous incidents to occur in the club's periphery.Called the Melody Room in the 1940s, the jazz dive bar was a favorite of gangster Bugsy Malone in the 1950s. Then in the early '70s, it was renamed Filthy McNasty only to become the Central in the '80s.
However, in the early '90s, when the Central's popularity was waning, Johnny Depp (news) stepped in to reincarnate the site once again, and in 1993, the Central became the Viper Room.
The revamped club was an instant success, but even the backing of a movie star didn't prevent the Viper Room from eventually languishing. Clearly, a new name and reconstruction doesn't guarantee lasting success.

August 23, 2004 MondayHartnett reports that the big-screen "The Black Dahlia" -- which was set to roll in L.A. this month with himself, Mark Wahlberg and Scarlett Johansson for director Brian DePalma -- is now set to be made this winter. Because of changing policies in the U.K., the picture was suddenly without funding -- but is now back on track, he says. First, he'll make "Lucky Seven," a tale of a man caught between rival criminal gangs in New York, with Ben Kingsley, Samuel L. Jackson and Lucy Liu. And after "Black Dahlia," he'll make the big-screen adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "The Rum Diaries."
Benicio del Toro had been planning to direct the latter, but Hartnett says Benicio's now decided on strictly acting in the project -- which will also star Johnny Depp and Nick Nolte. Bruce Robinson will direct. What a potent combo.

In his 2005 movie previews, JoBlo lists Tim Burton's "The Corpse Bride" at #3. Here is his brief review:"THE CORPSE BRIDE: I don't get obsessed by too many films (at least not by those that don't include sexual intercourse), but THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is one of those movies that I can just watch over and over again, to the point of scaring people around me. Apparently, the film and its memorabilia has become a religion in Japan, and I have to say that I subscribe to a part of that movement. Found by Really'Finding Neverland' to make U.S. debut in Shreveport

By JENNIFER FLOWERS
The Associated Press at nola.comSHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Shreveport has snagged the U.S. premiere of a Miramax film already generating Oscar buzz.
Finding Neverland, starring Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman, will be screened Sept. 11 at The Strand Theatre, kicking off the Shreveport Regional Arts Council's Peter Pan Centennial celebration and opening of an art center.
Directed by Marc Forster, whose last project was the Academy Award-winning Monster's Ball, the film already has been earmarked by Entertainment Weekly as a likely Oscar nominee.
James Hart, co-chair of Shreveport's Peter Pan Centennial with children's illustrator and author William Joyce, asked Miramax to bring the U.S. premiere to Shreveport to coincide with Peter Pan's 100th anniversary celebration.
The Shreveport native was screenwriter and executive producer of the Steven Spielberg-directed film, Hook, which tells the story of what might have happened if Peter Pan decided to grow up.
"I don't think anyone else is celebrating the 100 years of Peter Pan the way Shreveport is," Hart said. "Bill Joyce and I are creative partners in a number of projects and it only seemed like the natural thing to do."
Finding Neverland is set in early 20th century London and fictionalizes the life of Scottish writer J.M. Barrie as he conjures up Peter Pan, who created his own childlike fantasy world filled with pirates and fairies. The story follows Barrie to the opening night of his play, Peter Pan, at the Duke of York's Theatre in 1904.
Although Miramax has asked people associated with the film to attend the Shreveport screening, many already are attending Neverland's world premiere Sept. 10 at the 61st Venice International Film Festival in Italy, the night before the first U.S. showing in Shreveport.
The event starts at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 with pre-show entertainment, including a Shreveport Opera Express performance of Peter Pan Broadway hits and scenes from Peter Pan by Shreveport's Peter Pan Players.
"The selection of Shreveport is a commemoration of the historic success that the arts community and SRAC have had in producing programs that become larger than life," said Pam Atchison, SRAC executive director. "We wanted to bring national attention to Shreveport and ... we are."

Friday August 20, 2004Can Hollywood star Johnny Depp save the dwindling career of tiresome rockers Oasis?
Well that's what the twosome are hoping.
They decided to pull the plug on their latest album after failing to get the right reaction when they premiered it at the Glastonbury Festival.
But Noel and Liam have now perked up some of the production of the songs and the album's ready to go.
But what fans won't know is that strumming on a few tracks is none other than Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp, who's a massive Oasis fan.
This is not the first time he has lent a hand, as he also appeared on one track on their last album.
Johnny's also keen to appear in their next video, as the boys hate making them.
Think Justin Timberlake and Sir Elton John and you have the picture.
From Hello Magazine20 AUGUST 2004
A CLEAN CUT LOOK FOR JOHNNY DEPPAfter donning Victorian costume for From Hell, 18th-century American garb in Sleepy Hollow and pirate gear in Pirates Of The Caribbean, actor Johnny Depp once again finds himself in a period piece in the upcoming Finding Neverland.
The movie, which tells the tale of how Peter Pan creator JM Barrie was inspired to write the children's classic, is set in 1904 London. And, as these new film stills show, the Hollywood star manages to look devastatingly handsome even as he dons conservative wool suits and a short, clean haircut for the lead role.
Co-starring with Johnny in the drama, directed by Monster's Ball filmmaker Marc Forster, is British actress Kate Winslet, who herself is no stranger to films set in the past.

It looks like fans won't be seeing Johnny in modern fashions for quite a while, as his upcoming projects – as a 17th-century poet in The Libertine, Captain Jack in Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 and Willy Wonka in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory – all feature the star in retro wardrobes.

Johnny Depp is so 400 years ago
The way Johnny Depp has bucked conventional career wisdom should be an inspiration (or rebuke) to every actor who ever took a role in a big, dumb Hollywood movie just to get a paycheck. This man has beaten his own weird path every step of the way and succeeded, and that path is currently taking him back to the 1600s in "The Libertine." The debut film by director Laurence Dunmore and playwright Stephen Jeffreys features Depp as 17th-century bisexual poet John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, a pleasure seeker whose death from syphilis at age 33 led to posthumous fame for his work. At the moment, the movie is only rumored to contain some same-sex liplocks, but it's guaranteed to feature co-stars like Samantha Morton, John Malkovich, and snaggle-toothed Irish punk-rock legend Shane MacGowan. And as cool as that casting is, Romeo is happy to report that Depp will most likely be kissing newcomer Rupert Friend rather than MacG.

Be on the lookout for a new Johnny cover. Johnny is on the Entertainment Weekly cover for August 20-27, which is devoted to Finding Neverland.![]()
The Article is in the November Fall Movie Preview section.
A little sweetness can be a beautiful thing. Too much, however, and you've got yourself a Robin William's clip reel. Of course, the goal is to make the audiences weep like little girls chopping onions and not have them not resent you for it in the morning. That's the idea if it's Academy Awards you're after. And since Finding Neverland may wind up being Miramax's best hope for statuettes this year, you better believe that's the idea.Fortunately, Neverland features a stud farm of Oscar pedigree. In addition to Monster's Ball director Forster and three-time nominee Winslet, there's Depp, hot on the heels of his Best Actor nod as Captain Jack, playing prominent Scottish playwright J. M. Barrie, a misunderstood, boyishly mischievous eccentric. In other words, a character right in Depp's wheelhouse. The film traces Barrie's touching friendship with a widowed mother (Winslet) and her sons who inspired Barrie's masterpiece , Peter Pan.
Neverland has been awaiting release for over a year, hindered by Universal's 2003 Peter Pan, which was contractually allowed to bow first. Now that it's opening, the film may steam up some literary scholars who argue that Barrie's life may not have been as pure as Neverland. "There were a couple of ways you could go with Barrie," says Depp. "One was riding on the coattails of all the negative hearsay. The possibility that maybe he was a little sideways with the children. But f---, that's an obvious way to go, isn't it?"
Winslet, who it should be noted , played Wendy in a stage production of Peter Pan at age 15, says Depp was perfectly cast: "He's like Peter Pan." In fact, Depp got along so well with one of the child actors, 12-year-old Freddie Highmore (who plays Peter), that he helped him land the role of Charlie in his and Tim Burton's upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Winslet adds that during one stuffy dinner scene in the film, Depp secretly rigged a handheld whoopie-cushion device that had the child actors nervously giggling exactly as the script called for. "The boys didn't know whether to laugh or to cry," she says. When reminded of the whoopie-cushion incident, Depp cracks up, then deadpans, "There are certain elements of boyhood we can't escape. And farts will always be funny." And in the right hands, maybe even a little bit sweet.
What's at stake: Depp's long-overdue first Oscar. (Nov. 12)

Wilmot was believed to be bisexual, and spies are reporting that Depp has some heavy-duty tonsil-hockey scenes with another man in the flick. “His name is Rupert Friend and he’s a fairly unknown actor,” says the source, “but very handsome. The lucky guy.”
Depp’s rep couldn’t be reached for comment, but the actor joins such hunks as Colin Farrell (in “Alexander” and “A Home at the End of the World”), Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger (“Brokeback Mountain”) to play gay or bisexual characters on screen.

Johnny Depp is rumored to have an on-screen same-sex kiss in his upcoming film The Libertine, according to MSNBC.com's Jeannette Walls. Libertine stars Depp as 17th-century poet John Wilmot, the earl of Rochester, whom literary historians believe to have been bisexual. Miramax's Friedman touts Depp
Johnny Depp Throws His Hat Into Oscar RingThere's going to be some big-name shots at Oscar this season — like Oliver Stone's "Alexander," Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator" and Jonathan Demme's "The Manchurian Candidate."
And then there will be some sleepers. Marc Forster's "Finding Neverland," starring Johnny Depp, is the perfect example.
"Finding Neverland" has nothing to do with Michael Jackson, but it should nevertheless interest the pop singer who wanted to be Peter Pan. The film concerns "Peter Pan" author J.M. Barrie, played to perfection by Depp, and the way he came to write his most famous and enduring work.
Barrie, like Jackson, took an interest in small male children who were not his own. The difference is that a hint of impropriety was quickly dispelled.
Instead, it seems that Barrie — who was in an unhappy marriage — became enchanted by a woman and her little boys in a London park one day. At the time, there were only two children and the woman was married.
Later, after she gave birth two more times, her husband died, leaving Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet in the film) and her sons (two of them famously named Peter and Michael) dependent on Barrie.
The events in "Finding Neverland" are inspired by Barrie's life and a play of the same name, also fictionalized, by Allan Knee.
Forster is best known for directing Halle Berry to an Oscar in the gritty "Monsters Ball." This would make "Finding Neverland" even a greater accomplishment, since the two films could not be more different.
"Finding Neverland" is almost like a great Disney movie (how ironic). You get the feeling that Mary Poppins is going to drop into this turn-of-the-century London set at any moment.
There's a lot of whimsy at play here, while beneath the surface, Barrie's loneliness and insecurity as an artist rumble with an urgency.
I've never been a huge Johnny Depp fan, but last year the Academy almost gave him an Oscar for "Pirates of the Caribbean." This year, the members will get their chance.
Depp's performance as Barrie is simply mesmerizing. You can not look at "21 Jump Street" or "Blow" or even "Edward Scissorhands" to find a precursor for this work. (Frankly, I can't remember him ever having this much dialogue.)
He carries "Finding Neverland" from beginning to end, creating an indelible portrait of a very talented, conflicted man. This is the movie and the performance to watch when awards season kicks off late next month.

The Fall Movie Preview issue of Premiere Magazine says:
Finding Neverland (Miramax, October 22)Loosely based on true events, this mix of period drama and fantasy revolves around author and playwright J.M. Barrie (Johnny Depp), who finds inspiration for his most famous work, Peter Pan, in his relationship with the Llewelyn Davies family (widow Sylvia, played by Kate Winslet, and her four sons). “It’s more trying to capture the spirit of the story than trying to make a historical portrait,” says Marc Forster, who read the script before he filmed Monster’s Ball but was able to get the gig only after that film’s success. In the can for more than a year (it had to be released after last Christmas’s live-action Peter Pan), the film moves between Barrie’s emotional reality – his estrangement from his wife (Radha Mitchell), his affection for Sylvia and her offspring – and his dreamworld, as his imagination gives birth to the boy who won’t grow up. “As an actor, that’s what you do – you put yourself into a fantasy world that isn’t always nice,” says Winslet. “The world that Sylvia inhabits is pretty tough toward the end. But that’s what acting is, it’s about pretending, so for me it’s a very poignant story.”
About a boy: Depp, the father of two, embraced his own inner child. “It was no problem for Johnny to get right inside there with those boys and be a kid,” Winslet says. “That stuff you really can’t act.”

Carver counting on 'Pirates' for another win

WESTPORT - Johnny Depp is about a month late for the city's annual pirate festival, but his wooden double is almost ready to make an appearance today as the 15th Annual West Coast "Big One" Chainsaw Carving Competition wraps up.Chainsaw carver Bob King has spent more than 20 hours trying to duplicate a scene from "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," where Depp's character, pirate Capt. Jack Sparrow, faces off against his nemesis, Capt. Barbosa, played by Geoffrey Rush. The details are starting to come together, hands and swords already in the air as if ready to spar.
The sculpture combines elements of the festival's nautical theme with its special Seven Deadly Sins theme. King must finish the sculpture by 5 p.m. today. Awards for best carvings will be given out Sunday at 2 p.m.
King, who in the industry is known for using a chainsaw to etch perfect emotions on the faces of his wooden sculptures, has garnered praise across the country for his work. Last year, he won first place at Westport's festival by carving a maritime scene featuring a little boy with a Dungeness crab and a perplexed seagull looking on.
"And you know how he did it? With the boy's smile," said fellow carver Trace Breitenfeldt. "That smile was so perfect, so real. And that's the type of work you can expect from Bob."
"Last year I did good," King said. "I feel I have to do something spectacular as a follow up. But I don't want to hear that I'm going to win this year, or any year. I hate that. I don't like listening to it because I jinx myself.

Florida rock-musician turned-actor (and now Parisian expatriate) Johnny Depp has attracted an eclectic, not- just-for-females audience since his introduction in 1984's A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. But it's his work for director Tim Burton, beginning with his portrayal of the title role in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, that has helped establish his unique persona as a serious, idiosyncratic actor undaunted by the challenge of bringing odd characters to life on screen-including the title role in ED WOOD, Ichabod Crane in SLEEPY HOLLOW and Willy Wonka in Burton's upcoming CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. All-star costume drama at museum
Aug 3 2004
By Dayle CrutchlowBefore superstar Johnny Depp can start filming the sequel to his blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean he will have to come to Nuneaton - to get his costume back!
The pirate outfit worn by the Hollywood heart-throb in his starring role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the smash hit Curse of the Black Pearl movie is taking pride of place as part of a new exhibition at Nuneaton's Art Gallery and Museum, in Riversley Park.
And that's not the only piece of sartorial movie history forming part of the Film Star Fashion exhibition, which runs until September 12. Also on display is Madonna's sumptuous gown from Evita, Nicole Kidman's elegant outfit from Portrait of a Lady, Cate Blanchett's costume from Elizabeth and Richard E Grant's dandy duds from The Scarlet Pimpernel.
The costumes have been loaned to the museum from London company Cosprop, who design and make them for the stars of the silver screen.
Exhibitions officer Jennifer Nicholson said all of the outfits are amazing and she is particularly enchanted by Madonna's cerise dress and cloak from Evita.
She said: "The colours on that are absolutely stunning, as is some of the bead-work on Nicole Kidman's dress from Portrait of a Lady."
Even so, the staff are resisting the temptation to slip them on themselves.
Miss Nicholson said: "They are on the mannequins and that is where they are staying. We only handle them wearing gloves.
"It's just brilliant to think that these actors and actresses have been so close to these garments."
From Femalefirst.co.ukJohnny Depp claims the best thing he ever did for his career was quit Hollywood to live in France.
The heartthrob actor turned his back on the glitzy showbiz lifestyle six years ago to set-up home with girlfriend, French singer Vanessa Paradis, and admits he has never looked back.
Depp told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "The six years I have been away have done wonders for my career.
I've been living in France and I'm so removed from Hollywood that I don't know anything. I don't have to think of anything but my work and I don't have to worry about what anybody else is doing."

DEPP: MY LIFE WAS WASTED BEFORE I HAD KIDS![]()
OSCAR-nominated actor JOHNNY DEPP has dismissed the first 36 years of his life as meaningless up until the birth of his first child.
The former Hollywood badboy, 41, has calmed down since meeting French singer/actress VANESSA PARADIS and becoming a father to LILY-ROSE, five, and JACK, two, after a string of turbulent relationships with KATE MOSS, WINONA RYDER, SHERILYN FENN and JENNIFER GREY.
Depp says, "Anything I've done up to May 27, 1999 was kind of an illusion, existing without living. The birth of my daughter gave me life.
"The kiddies give me strength and perspective. Certain things about Hollywood used to make me angry, now I go, 'Oh p**s off, I'm going to play BARBIEs with my daughter.'"

Depp warns paparazzi: 'Stay away from my kids'
08/04/2004 -Hollywood heart-throb Johnny Depp has issued a chilling warning to paparazzi who photograph his children - stay away or "I'll bite your nose off!"
The Edward Scissorhands star lives a quiet life in France with his long-term love Vanessa Paradis and their children Jack, two, and Lily-Rose, five.
While Depp doesn't mind if snappers catch him on camera, he is fiercely protective of his young tots.
Depp says: "I'm warning the paparazzi, 'if you're going to get me have a long lens and make sure you're really far away because if I get my hands on you it could get ugly.'
"I don't care if they take my photo - although I don't know why anyone needs another picture of me. I don't care if they Vanessa's photo, but when they take care of my kids, that I can't support.
"If I catch them I'll bite their noses off and swallow it."

Depp's deeply dippy for RyeWith its cobbled streets quaint teashops and stunning downland Rye is simply beautiful. Now Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp has become so enamoured with the ancient port he intends to move there. Reports from America suggest the millionaire star of Edward Scissorhands and Pirates Of The Caribbean is looking to buy a home for his young family.
Depp who has two children with French actress girlfriend Vanessa Paradis has publicly confessed his love for all things traditionally English. He has spoken of his fondness for pubs hearty English food such as beef and Yorkshire pudding and soccer. Depp was said to have based his character in Pirates Of The Caribbean on ageing rocker Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones who lives in West Wittering near Chichester.
In the past he has been charmed by English women including supermodel Kate Moss who he dated for several years in the Nineties. In the 1066 town of Rye talk that residents could soon be rubbing shoulders with one of Hollywood's hottest stars was greeted with delight. Locals said he used to visit the town frequently with Kate Moss and stayed at the 70-bed Mermaid Inn in Mermaid Street famed locally for its old timbers and open fires.
The inn one of England's oldest dates back to the 16th Century. It has hosted many stars over the years including Andy Garcia Pierce Brosnan and Charlie Chaplin. In fact Chaplin entertained movie legends Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren in Rye.A spokeswoman for the Mermaid Inn said: "Everyone is talking about Johnny Depp possibly moving here.
We would certainly like to see him again. He has stayed here beforeand by all accounts he was a very nice person. Resident John Stevens 46 said: "Nobody really made a big fuss when Johnny Depp visited. People would just let him go about his business without hassle. That's the type of place Rye is. If he does move here, he'll be made more than welcome.Should he move to Rye Depp will be only three miles from ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney who has a sprawling estate at Peasmarsh. It has even been suggested that Depp was interested in buying Sir Paul's secluded countryside retreat. Depp who commands £20 million a movie is bound to find Rye's average house prices of £195 000 well within his budget. And with Rye being within 70 miles of London and France where he and Miss Paradis currently live 41-year-old Depp would find it an ideal location.
Attractions in Rye may seem a million miles from what Hollywood has to offer but Depp is known to enjoy watersports such as surfing and sailing which are popular at nearby Camber.
