Depp’s $78 Mil for “Pirates 2” Highest Actor Booty in History
Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Total trilogy chest for Depp $106 million, with P3 poised to dig up more gold
By Alex Ben Block

HOLLYWOOD, CA. (Hollywood Today) 4/26/07 – Johnny Depp has earned an estimated $78 million so far for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” including back end, apparently making him the highest paid actor ever.

Yo ho, that‘s not all the pirate life has in store for Depp. The swashbuckler’s share of the loot from the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” trilogy since 2003 now exceeds $106 million with another $40 million-plus on the line for P3, according to an analysis by Hollywood Today. It lifts him to the ranks of the best paid actors in history for a movie franchise, which he did not also produce.

While extensive research went into the estimates, one only has to look at the Top 20 worldwide grossing films of all time to realize one, and one star only, was central to a non-ensemble film with the clout to demand $20 million plus a 20% cut of the gross for a sequel. Not a terribly unusual marquee star deal in Hollywood, but P2 surprised everyone by grossing a staggering $1.07 billion. While Depp’s take is less than 20% after numerous contractual deductions, it’s still enough to account for the conservative estimate of $78 million.

No wonder Depp, 43, was able to buy his own island in the Bahamas to play pirate with five-year-old son Jack, seven-year-old daughter Lily-Rose and mate Vanessa Paradis. And soon, he’ll have enough to build a gold-plated pier if he wants. He is in line for an even bigger payday after Disney’s ultra wide May 25 release of the nearly three hour long “P3: At World’s End,” although reports of the picture’s soaring cost, if true, could delay additional payments. That is because under Depp’s deal, according to sources, Disney gets most of its production outlay back before the gross profit participants see any significant returns. However, in return, they participation is even better than the old first dollar gross deal. That is fine as long as the movie floats the public’s boat like “Dead Man’s Chest.”

There is no doubt P2 cost at least $225 million. Now there are reports the cost of P3 has soared toward $300 million, especially when marketing in added in.

So the challenge for super producer Jerry Bruckheimer, star Johnny Depp and their talented crew: To be seen as a big hit, P3 needs to score as big or bigger than P2 in theaters, in the midst of a high competitive summer.

That won’t be easy. Here are some marks that have to be reached or broken: P2 became the highest grossing theatrical release of 2006 and one of the few movies ever to gross over $1 billion worldwide in theaters. The DVD was the top selling in home video for the year with over 15.5 million sold and the soundtrack sold over 221,000 copies at $18.98 each (retail).

The success of P2 was a surprise. It out performed expectations and set box office records with a $135 million opening, biggest of the year. It set a new high for a movie opening in July, or a movie opening in Summer. It had the highest per theater average for any wide release in 2006. It topped the All Time single Day mark on Friday, July 7 with $55.8 million. That also broke the opening day and Friday records. It then became the fastest to reach $100 million, which happened after the second day. It was the fastest to $200 million, setting a new mark of 8 days, and then fastest to $300 million, after 16 days.

Now P3 just has to do better than that to look good, and avoid the more typical pattern of movie sequels which are usually about 60 percent of the box office of the original.

Awareness of P3 is huge. The issue is want-to-see, at least on the first weekend. So far so good. P3 is tracking just as strongly as P2 did with possible ticket buyers, according to Michael Coristine of Brandintel, which provides marketing intelligence gathered through online surveys, interviews and searches. “Audience engagement and interest are very strong,” according to Coristine, “on a par with (P2).”

That doesn’t mean there isn’t still concern over how strong the legs will be for P3. “(P3) may not break records like (P2),” says Coristine. “A lot more people saw it but the sentiment for the film itself was not as high as on the first one. We may see a drop off in (interest) among those who saw it. Even though it may not break the records set by (P3) it definitely is still one of the strongest movies of the summer.”

It will need to be one of the most liked movies as well to propel repeat ticket sales and lucrative merchandising and licensing, which is massive.

The movie is being premiered May 19 as a benefit for the Make a Wish Foundation of America. For the first time they are selling tickets to the huge premiere, to be held at Disneyland in Anaheim, for $1,500 each. Disney hopes to raise $3 million for charity.

If it opens as big as expected, there may also be an announcement that Depp will star in the fourth and fifth and possibly sixth “Pirate” movies. They would be made together, keeping the franchise alive and profits coming for years more.

While the P2/3 writers, in interviews, say they only planned for a trilogy (which included adding P1 after the fact), Disney has a lot of motivation to keep “Pirates” sailing forth. Not only has “Pirates” been a hit in theaters and video stores, but it has also been an enormous revenue engine for licensing, merchandising, promotion and it has re-vitalized the theme parks where “Pirates” rides now bear the likeness of Depp’s Sparrow.

The surprising success of P1 and the blockbuster box office and soaring DVD sales of P2 have already put Depp in the rarefied company of a handful of other actors who have ridden franchises that spawned huge licensing revenues to almost unimaginable wealth; and he is one of the very few who didn’t also produce the movie (ala producer/star Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible” or producer/star Mike Meyers in the “Austin Powers” movies or Bruce Willis on this summer’s “Live Free Or Die Hard).”

A few other actors might receive more upfront per film on occasion (Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler and Mel Gibson come to mind), but thanks to back end payments and licensing royalties, Depp stands among the highest compensated performers of all time from a single movie franchise.

Depp’s earnings come not just from his acting, but are also for use of his likeness on a mind boggling array of consumer products, in promotion and especially at the theme parks, where the Pirates Of The Caribbean ride has been remade since the movies became blockbusters to reflect the images from the movies, and the face of Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp, in his last contract, signed for two movies. He has a separate contract for the merchandising rights and for the use of his character and image at the park, according to sources.

Depp is also unique in that while it is his face that is out front on everything, making him virtually irreparable. That is very different than many of the great commercial cinema franchises, including “Spiderman” and “Shrek,” the summer’s other two big sequels.

The central characters in most of the big merchandisable mega movie hits are part of a fantasy (Star Wars, James Bond, Batman), which means individual actors over time can be replaced; or voices in animation (Toy Story, Shrek) who can be replaced. The star is just a voice or is cloaked in a costume, as in “Spider-man” who isn’t nearly as interesting in real life. Among the current top licensing properties, the only human face is Depp’s Cap. Sparrow.

Today’s movie heroes
picture (im)perfect
(excerpt)
Take a Pirate with a slight swish and a little eyeliner, a guy who’s part spider with a mild manic depressive disorder, and a computer-animated creature of unknown genus and what have you got? About $4.5 billion and counting.

May is the month for the third instalments of Pirates of the Caribbean, Spider-Man and Shrek, proof of the infinite imagination of Hollywood, the world’s love for fantasy and silliness and the untold riches available to those who can create it. No one knows yet if any of the new films will fill the billion-dollar plus shoes of their predecessors, but we do know the faithful will return to see what Johnny Depp, Tobey McGuire and Mr. and Mrs. Shrek are up to. These films go beyond mere movies or even franchises. They are international cultural events that make buying a ticket a rite of globalized citizenship.

As well, these heroes are not your mother’s heroes. In a mad, mad, mad world, these leads are mortal to a fault. Depp plays a pirate of limited morals, and does it with the flair of a drag queen. Spider-Man is a tortured soul, riven by guilt and insecurity, while Shrek is an ogre of good conscience but ugly as hell. Yet, we can embrace their faults, perhaps in part because these flawed fellows are angelic when compared with the fissures of real life, where heroes of any description are in short supply. And character aside, where else can you lose yourself in such a majestic, irrelevant spectacle of sound and fury for 12 bucks or so?

When Johnny comes sailing home

No other actor could have done justice to Jack Sparrow role

How we love Johnny Depp: his unkempt good looks, his aura of vaguely rehabilitated naughtiness, his determination to keep his name below the title, so you never really know what a “Johnny Depp” movie might be. Director Tim Burton calls him a character actor in a leading man’s body.

And how we love Jack Sparrow, unregenerate coward, egotistical scoundrel, amoral buccaneer determined to beat the devil with a combination of betrayal, speed and good luck; outlaw of questionable sexuality and intermittent
sobriety. He’s the anti-hero who has leered his way through two blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean movies — with a third, At World’s End, coming May 25 — that are rousing, messy, gallant and pansexual. Call them “swishbucklers.”

It was a marriage made in Hollywood heaven, and it paid off: Oscar nominations for the first Pirates film, $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts for the second, and guaranteed lineups for the third. And not so incidentally, they have made a genuine movie star out of Depp, who is being dragged — kicking if not screaming — into the limelight and out of a forced attempt at obscurity (he chooses chancy projects; he lives in France; he insisted on turning Jack Sparrow into what he calls a combination of Keith Richards and Pepe Le Pew, a choice that had Disney executives rattled and uncertain, at least until the opening-day receipts were counted.)

It might not have worked with any other star. Depp was an inspired choice. Imagine how Brat Pitt, say, could have turned the role into an unregenerate hunk, or how the “sensitive” sincerity of a Jake Gyllenhaal or a Heath Ledger could have spoiled all the knavish fun. Depp, the former teen idol (21 Jump Street) is a heartthrob, but a quirky one: a mincing director in Ed Wood, an ethereal man-child in Edward Scissorhands, a feathery ladies’ man in Don Juan DeMarco. He was nominated for an Oscar for the first Pirates movie and immediately followed it up with a second Oscar-nominated performance, this time as another perpetual adolescent in Finding Neverland.

Thoroughly Modern Johnny

The LA Modernism Show is rolling into town once again on May 4-6. You'll remember last year's event was hosted by Will Ferrell, and this year's celeb host is Johnny Depp, with a theme perfect for the mascara-wearing pirate who has been known to pick up a guitar or two: "Music & Design" will include examples that demonstrate how modern design influenced music of the 20th century:

On display will be the first electrically amplified piano designed by John Vassos and produced by RCA--a 1939 World's Fair show-stopper along with other unusual pianos including the Rippen Aluminum Grand.

Likewise 20th century guitar makers such as Gibson and Fender remedied the modern demands for louder instruments by creating solid bodied guitars in more exciting shapes and colors with space age names such as the Telecaster, Explorer, and the Flying V on the headstocks. In the last few years prices for these vintage classics have skyrocketed to nearly a million dollars with Eric Clapton's guitar selling at auction for $990,000. A collection of rare vintage guitars, 1940's jukeboxes, speakers designed for the modern home by George Nelson will also be exhibited.

The show, sale and events are all at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

From Make A Wish Foundation

World Premiere Celebration for Disney's Third "Pirates" Adventure – "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" – to Raise $3 Million for Make-A-Wish Foundation®

LOS ANGELES (April 13, 2007) – The Walt Disney Company is helping to make wishes come true for children all over the world by donating proceeds from the highly anticipated World Premiere of Walt Disney Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America and Make-A-Wish® International, it was announced today by Dick Cook, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. The event will take place on May 19 at Disneyland® Park in Anaheim, Calif., with all of the film’s stars expected to participate. This gala celebration for the third installment of the enormously popular “Pirates” saga will raise $3 million for Make-A-Wish efforts, with Disney providing an initial donation in excess of $1 million to the charities, in addition to underwriting the entire cost of the Premiere (so that 100 percent of the ticket income will benefit both Make-A-Wish organizations).

This is the first time that the public has been invited to participate in a “Pirates” Premiere. Individual tickets are priced at $1,500, and are now available for sale at www.piratespremiere.com. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of America and Make-A-Wish International are dedicated to granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions in order to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, “Disney is dedicated to making dreams come true and we’re extremely proud to be lending our support to the Make-A-Wish Foundation with this benefit World Premiere of ‘Pirates’ to make a difference. The Studio is extremely excited about the upcoming release of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’ and we’re pulling out all the stops to give it the send-off it deserves with a magnificent gala event at Disneyland. Disney has been a longtime supporter of this wonderful organization and we’re excited to be doing something special to bring smiles to the children and their families, giving them magical moments to share.”

Over the past 25 years, Disney has continued to support the Make-A-Wish cause, contributing more than $10 million in cash and in-kind donations on an annual basis. With more than 6,000 wishes granted each year including visits to the Disney Parks, Disney Cruises, meeting Disney Characters and visiting TV and movie sets, including “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, Disney-themed wishes continue to be the most popular requests.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” picks up where the record-breaking 2006 smash hit left off, with our heroes Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) allied with Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) in a desperate quest to free Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from his mind-bending trap in Davy Jones’ locker. With the terrifying ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman, and its commander Davy Jones under the control of the East India Trading Company, there is havoc on the Seven Seas. Navigating through treachery, betrayal and wild waters, the heroic trio must forge their way to exotic Singapore and confront the cunning Pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). Now headed beyond the very ends of the earth, each must ultimately choose a side in a final titanic battle – as not only their lives and fortunes, but the entire future of the freedom-loving Pirate way hangs in the balance. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Gore Verbinski from a screenplay written by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio, our beloved cast sets sail again on a fresh new adventure in May 2007.

They were joined by his son Jack, five, partner VANESSA PARADIS and a nanny.

Here is the Full quote from Keith Richards about Johnny Depp and Pirates
The actor I'd most like to play me in a film is...

Johnny Depp
"Johnny and I had a great time, loads of fun. I expected [filming the third 'Pirates Of The Carribean' movie, 'At World's End'] to be fun but it was even more fun than I had imagined. I was driving through the driveway to Walt Disney studios the other day thinking, 'Jesus Christ, I'm following in the footsteps of Mickey Mouse here.' No, it was brilliant, I was there for four or five days and I did my bit, and Johnny was his usual graceful self and we're both the same size, so we swapped clothes and there it is. I met Johnny and he was just another one of my son's friends, 'This is Brian, this is Debbie, this is Johnny', and we met like that, years ago. I didn't even know what he did, I thought he was a failed rock'n'roll artist, and then I started to see some of his work and then he called me up said, 'Hey Jesus Christ, I've copied you to do 'Pirates...',' which I thought was the gentlemanly way of letting me know. I mean no wonder he paid for all the beers. I didn't realise I was being observed."

It's a Special Easter Edition of What Were They Thinking! According to the National Retail Federation, more than 75 percent of U.S. consumers celebrate Easter in some way. Those who celebrate the holiday spend an average of $96.51 on gifts, decoration, food, clothing ... and candy.

What says Easter better than Peeps — everybody's favorite marshmallow treat? But would you really want to eat a Peeps  in the shape of Rosie O'Donnell? Or Will Ferrell?

Just Born, the Bethlehem, Penn.-based confectionery company that makes the long-lasting marshmallow concoction, conducted a survey asking sweet-toothed fans "If Peeps came to life, what celebrity might it become?"

The top males: Will Ferrell, Johnny Depp, Jamie Foxx and Justin Timberlake.

The top females: Jessica Simpson, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell.

According to Kathy Bassininski, the companies brand director, "We produce Peeps in a variety of shapes and colors to celebrate all seasons. Regardless of their shape or color, Peeps always maintain their sense of humor!”

A sense of humor is one thing. But eating a marshmallow replica of Will Ferrell or Rosie O'Donnell? For some, that might result in a loss of appetite.

By the way, for those of you keeping track, in the all-important chick vs. bunny vote, the chick won with 59 percent of the vote.

Keith Richards thought Johnny Depp was a failed rocker

Washington, April 4: Rock star Keith Richards mistook Johnny Depp for a failed rock'n'roll artist until the actor personally asked 'The Rolling Stones' star to play his father in the new 'Priates of the Caribbean' film.

The 63-year-old rocker says that he was absolutely ignorant of the fact that Depp was an actor, until he did research and discovered the truth about him.

"He was just another of my son's friends. I didn't know what he did," Contactmusic quoted him as telling NME magazine.

"I thought he was a failed rock'n'roll artist, then I started to see his work. He called and said, 'Hey, Jesus Christ, I've copied you to do Pirates' - which I thought was the gentlemanly way of letting me know. No wonder he paid for all the beers. POOLE'S entrepreneurial co-promoter Matt Ford is hunting down a super fan to become the new Pirates of the Carib-bean star Captain Jack Sparrow on race nights.

Ford is placing an advert in the club's Good Friday programme asking for eccentric supporters to apply for the role as a Johnny Depp lookalike to act out the role during Wednesday meetings at Wimborne Road.

Ford revealed: "With the new Pirates of the Caribbean 3 film due out in May, we believe this is the perfect opportunity for the club to have a Captain Jack Sparrow mascot.

"Their task will be to add to the meeting's presentation, go wild in front of the grandstand whenever the team get a maximum 5-1 heat win and generally mingle with the crowd.

"We will provide all the clothing and make-up.

"The winning candidate will be the person who shows me they have the credentials to be a bit of an entertainer and has the capabilities of being Dorset's answer to the new legend Captain Jack."

Ford also admitted that the winning entrant could be male or female.

"If they show me they are good enough, the role will be theirs," he said.

Interested parties are asked to contact Matt Ford at Poole Speedway, Stadium Way, Poole, Dorset and provide a photo and contact number.

"I guarantee I will reply to everyone," added Ford.

"We believe this will be a fabulous addition to the night's entertainment and, of course, if we have a good response, the winner will become quite a star when Sky Sports cameras are at the stadium live on Monday, April 23."

'Pirates' May Keep Sailing After This Summer
Insiders Say Depp May Have Interest in More Films

The Los Angeles Times reports that the successful 'Pirates of the Carribean' franchise may continue past the conclusion of this summer's 'At World's End,' long thought to be the final film in the series.

Best Opening Weekends of All Time
See the films Capt. Jack climbed over to make box office history.

The Times reports that there are murmurs on the Disney set that the film may have sea legs once the trilogy concludes. Insiders have said that Johnny Depp , who plays Captain Jack Sparrow in the films, may have interest in continuing his role.

The production director, Rick Heinrichs, tells the Times "If Johnny's interested, why wouldn't they?"

'At World's End' opens on May 25. It has a hard act to follow. The second film in the trilogy, 'Dead Man's Chest,' crushed the box office record for an opening weekend, tallying $135 million when it hit theaters last July. To date, the first two 'Pirates' films have brought in over $728 million during their domestic theatrical runs.

The success of the film's are due in large part to Johnny Depp 's portrayal of Sparrow. He earned an Oscar nomination for the first installment and the performance of the movie has helped him jump to the top of the Hollywood salary scale. Forbes estimates he earned $29 million for the year leading up to the smash opening for 'Dead Man's Chest.'

(Note from Kazren: Word at Disney is that many of the sets, instead of being recycled after filming, were put in storage)

From Depp Con 2007

Hello again to everyone!

It won't be long now until we meet Captain Jack again and learn how he gets out of his latest predicament . . . swallowed by the Kraken, now that's serious!

Since POTC, At World's End, opens on Memorial Day Weekend, we will be doing something different at DeppCon this year.  Instead of just one weekend for our annual convention, we plan to do a series of get togethers between May 18 and May 25, the date the movie opens.  The get togethers will be held in both Anaheim to tie in with the premiere and Los Angeles to tie in with the opening of the movie.  By doing the convention in this manner, everyone will have a chance to attend one or more functions.  Please note, we will not have any function planned for the day of the premiere, May 19, so you will be able to wait for the stars on the red carpet at Disneyland if you want.

At this time we don't plan to charge a registration fee to attend DeppCon.  We will be asking you to RSVP and let us know which events you want to participate in.  We will have a wonderful time seeing each other and catching up.  For those of you who will be coming in from out of town, please contact us for suggestions about hotel accommodations.

We are working on definite plans for various activities and will be back in touch with you soon with the list of events we have planned and ask you to RSVP at that time.

See you soon!
