Moss hits Hollywood as Yates

Kate Moss is set to star in her first Hollywood film, taking on the role of drug addict Paula Yates.  Model Kate, 32, will play Paula in the run-up to her tragic death, according to the Daily Star.  And Kate's ex-lover Johnny Depp, 42, is reportedly taking on the role of Paula's boyfriend Michael Hutchence.

Film bosses are convinced that the chemistry between Depp and Moss will attract many people to see the movie.

An insider told the newspaper: "It’ll be a chance for her to really prove she can act. And she’ll be spending a lot of time with Johnny again.  "It could work beautifully or be a disaster, but producers want a powerful leading couple."

Kate has made an amazing modelling comeback after allegations of cocaine abuse last year.  Her alter-ego Paula Yates, who was once married to Bob Geldof, led a troubled life which ended six years ago when she died of a heroin overdose aged 41.  Friends said she had never been able to get over the death of rock star Michael Hutchence, who killed himself in Sydney in 1997.

"Paula and Michael were both big drug users and lived a tortured existence," the insider added.  "Turning their ill-fated romance into a film will not make for comfortable viewing."

Pirates leads hopefuls of summer box office glory
by Mario Azzopardi

Sunday, 30 April, 2006

May starts next week and Hollywood unleashes hell at the box office. The first summer blockbuster of 2006 is "Mission: Impossible III".

According to several surveys held in the US over the past weeks, the summer box office champ is expected to be "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest". It debuts worldwide on July 7.

These surveys are predicting that the runner-up will be the controversial "The Da Vinci Code". It bows in the US on May 19. Some scenes were filmed in Vittoriosa.

The third most successful film is likely to be "Superman Returns", with new star Brandon Routh. It debuts in the US during the Fourth of July holiday period. Strangely, it bows in European cinemas later on in July after "Pirates".

Depp Battles With West Hollywood Over Development

(CBS) LOS ANGELES "Pirates of the Carribean" star Johnny Depp would rather see West Hollywood pols and developers walk the gangplank rather than block his kids' scenic view.

He slapped a suit against the city after officials authorized a Sunset Strip construction project that he alleged would ruin the scenic view from a portion of his $5.4 million Hollywood Hills property.

The site of the proposed project is a parking lot across from the Standard Hotel.

Depp alleged West Hollywood violated environmental quality laws by approving development of retail shops, a restaurant and parking structure beneath his gated 2.5 acre Sweetzer Avenue estate.

Development backers dispute Depp's charges and cite that Depp's children, Lily-Rose, 6 and Jack, 4, are to be raised in France where he and French actress Vanessa Paradis live.

Depp, 42, spends time with his family between their home in France, one on the Carribean island and the Hollywood Hills property.

It was unknown to what extent Depp resides in Los Angeles, though he was spotted recently at Hollywood area restaurants.

Disney World to cast for new Pirates of the Caribbean show with Captain Jack Sparrow at Magic Kingdom
Walt Disney World recently announced that its entertainment department was seeking improv actors who would play the roles of Captain Jack Sparrow or a fellow pirate in a new character show at the Magic Kingdom.
Captain Jack Sparrow is the lead character played by Johnny Depp in Walt Disney Pictures' hit movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, as well as its sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which is set to be released this summer. The films were inspired by the popular Disneyland attraction Pirates of the Caribbean.

The casting call seeks comedic actors with strong improvisational skills for a new “high-spirited” and humorous show involving “audience participation.” Captain Jack Sparrow and his assistant, a fellow crew member named Mack, will teach audience members in a fun participatory show how to live a “pirate’s life” and the secrets of the “pirate brotherhood.”

According to the call, in the new Pirates of the Caribbean show Captain Jack Sparrow and Mack will demonstrate the right and wrong ways to manage the situations a pirate may find himself in, with lessons entitled
“Swashbuckling for Beginners” and “Run Away – FAST!”

The upcoming Captain Jack Sparrow show at the Magic Kingdom will likely begin this summer to promote both the new film sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest as well as the attraction at the Magic Kingdom. Or it could begin performances as soon as May as a pirate-themed offering while the ride is still closed.
The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Walt Disney World will be closed through May and June as it undergoes a major refurbishment concurrently with Disneyland’s original version of the famous Disney attraction.
The refurbishment serves to incorporate new elements inspired by the blockbuster film starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly, and Geoffrey Rush. The attractions will feature an updated storyline and include new audio-animatronics figures of Captain Jack Sparrow.

The new versions of Pirates of the Caribbean will reopen this summer at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom to coincide with the nationwide release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, the second film in the planned trilogy from Walt Disney Pictures based on the Disneyland ride.

Uncompromising and full of conviction, she's never tried to be America's sweetheart. But that hasn't stopped audiences from falling head over heels for Lili Taylor. A fellow traveler, Johnny Depp, finds out what drives this inimitable individualist.

In 1993 actor Johnny Depp starred in director Emir Kusturica’s cult favorite Arizona Dream with actress Lili Taylor, an experience the two reminisce about in this month’s issue. In the film Depp plays a New York fish tagger lured to Arizona, where his kooky relatives hope he’ll join the family business. This summer Depp returns to the seas, reprising his Oscar-nominated role as Captain Jack Sparow in Gore Verbinski’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Page 99 LILI TAYLOR
For a working-class girl from the white-collar suburbs of Chicago who has always refused to have her edges buffed—and who has a resume filled with more damaged, insecure, and shockingly unstable characters than a Hollywood studio boardroom—the journey through moviedom has been less about making choices than winning battles.

Lili Taylor’s onscreen foibles have at times verged on the cruel and unusual: She has haplessly written songs about unrequited love (Say Anything, 1989), has been squired as part of an “ugly date” contest (Dogfight, 1991), and has had her attempts at domestic idyll summarily and fatally quashed (Six Feet Under, 2002-2004)---and that’s just a sampling. There was a time when it would have been easy to peg Taylor as a poster girl for sad naivete. But when it comes to both poking holes in Hollywood’s limited expectations for women and burrowing down to the unbreakable core of the terminally underestimated, she is as shrewd as they get.

After making an impression in early films like Mystic Pizza (1990) and Arizona Dream (1993), Taylor blossomed during the indie boom of the 1990s with a string of critically lauded performances in such movies as Household Saints (1993), The Addiction (1995) and most notably, Mary Harron’s I shot Andy Warhol (1996), in which she played sixties radical and Warhol trigger woman Valerie Solanas. She’s a shape-shifter to be sure. But if Taylor does share one thing with her characters, it’s a compulsion to bare her heart completely. Her own unwillingness to bat an ironic eye at their vulnerabilities and weaknesses—or to obscure them behind any affections of detached coolness—has allowed her to transform all the bad luck, bad bets and poor decisions that make them easy marks into a sort of monumental hope that is quickly becoming Taylor’s hallmark.

Having recently reunited with Harron for the director’s new biopic, The Notorious Bettie Page, Taylor will be seen later this summer starring opposite Matt Dillion in Bent Hamer’s Factotum, based on Charles Bukowski’s novel of the same name. Here the 39-year-old actress talks with her Arizona Dream co-star Johnny Depp, who gets measure of the woman.

Johnny Depp: Hi, sweetheart.

Lili Taylor: Hi, darlin’. How are you?

JD: I’m all right. How you doing?

LT: Thanks, Johnny, for doing this.

JD: Oh, no. I jumped at the chance.

LT: It’s going to be hard to keep the focus on me, because I would really love to interview you.

JD: You’d be bored.

LT: No, I wouldn’t. I have so many questions for you. You’re just blossoming. I love watching it.

JD: You’re an angel, you are. So what are you up to? You’re doing all kinds of stuff.

LT: Well, the biggest thing is Factotum, the Charles Bukowski movie I did with Matt Dillion. Are you a fan of Bukowski?

JD: Oh, yeah. In fact, all those years ago, back in Douglas, Arizona, where we were stationed for nine months working on Arizona Dream, you and I did a lot of talking about Bukowski and Hunter Thompson, even.

LT: I knew for sure that you loved Jack Kerouac, but I couldn’t remember if you were into Bukowski. Were you ever going to do a Bukowski picture?

JD: No. But I always felt that sort of stranger books of his, like Notes of a Dirty Old Man would be a really good movie. [Taylor laughs] But Factotum is great. How’d it go?

LT: It went really well. I think you’d love the film’s director, Bent Hamer. I mean, just being able to say “Bent” was part of the draw for me. [laughs]

JD: So, what was the shoot like? Was it get-in-get-out-quick kind of deal?

LT: It was. It reminded me of the ‘90’s when everyone was doing low-budget stuff. It sort of refurbished my good feelings about the whole independent-film thing, because it was like that kind of down-and-dirty, labor-of-love, money-dropping-out-before-we-started situation. Everybody was there because they wanted to be there. You know, I recently adapted a book for the screen [Hula by Lisa Shea], and I’m going to slowly bring it out into the world.

JD: You’re s**ting me. You adapted a book?

LT: Well, I wrote the damn script, but just bringing it out into the world is a whole other deal, isn’t it?

JD: Jesus, yeah.

LT: You were trying to do that, weren’t you? It was called Poop Express or something like that, right?

JD: [laughs] Poop Express?

LT: Poop Shoot, maybe? That wonderful thing that we did a reading of.

JD: Oh, Tight Wad. [both laugh] You mean Meet Mr. Tight Wad. It’s still being tinkered, with. Doing something like that is a whole other animal, isn’t it? It taps a completely different section of your brain---of your everything really.

LT: Oh, yeah, I mean, I love acting. It’s still infinitely appealing to me. But that other part of the equation interests me too.

JD: Do you reckon that you’re going to direct the movie and act in it as well?

LT: No.

JD: Good move. It’s nice to get into the ring for that initial bout without having to split your mind in two like that.

LT: Did you act in the first thing you directed? [The Brave, 1997]

JD: Yeah. It was a nightmare. I just thought I was going to die every day.

LT: That’s what I hear. There are a lot of feelings involved in acting, and the process can get messy. And then to have to move away from those feelings and into the kind of straight thinking that directors have to do must be very difficult.

JD: When you are driving the beast, you have to be aware of everything. People ask you weird questions, like, “What color do you want the white car to be?” [Taylor laughs] “Well, white. How about white” So you get into all those fun little details of things, and they just spin you out.

LT: I feel like I’m at least a year away from getting this thing done.

JD: I think your sensibility and your knowledge of the process is going to be a real gift to whomever you are working with. Getting back to Factotum, were you a fan of Bukowski before you did the movie?

LT: I went through a period when I loved it. It seems like a lot of people go through that at 16, 17, 18. Then I went though all sorts of confusing things in my twenties, and I wasn’t so sure how I fit into the Bukowski world as a woman. I wasn’t sure if Bukowski was a sexist, or what the hell was going on with the guy. Then I reread his work when Factotum came up, and I didn’t really find it to be sexist or misogynist. He was just working out his own issues with that stuff in a totally honest and gorgeous way. A lot of people have asked if it was though to play a woman in a movie based on a Bukowski book, or if I was resistant to playing that sort of character. And, to tell you the truth, I felt my part in this movie was much more multidimensional, much more heart felt, and much more complicated than a lot of the other female characters written by interesting women. I was also very into the whole working-class thing he explores. I missed that part of his work when I was younger. But as an adult, I appreciate that he was writing for the working-class guy.

JD: You bet. And yet he was kind of a great romantic too, wasn’t he?

LT: Totally I think Bukowski is about to have his turn, the way all these various writers have their turn at different times. There was that documentary about him [Bukowski: Born Into This, 2004] that was released a year or two ago. And now this film is going to be released, and hopefully a few more people are going to start reading his books.

JD: When the movie version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [1998] came out, good old Hunter Thompson was just amazed, because even though only seven and a half people saw the movie in the theaters, the number of people who came into Hunter’s life after that was really astounding. Now, there is something I’ve been meaning to say to you, because I haven’t seen you for a while. Do you remember a few years back when we were at my house here in Los Angeles and we were painting?

LT: Honey, I was just looking at your painting two minutes ago. I’ve got it up on the wall.

JD: I remember that we were painting and you grabbed the tiniest canvas and it was all pink and you painted this beautiful little girl in this sort of bluish protective sphere in the center of it. We were using these really heavy oil sticks and just laying it on really thick. Anyhow, there were two things I wanted to say to you about it. The first is that after, like, five years, your painting is finally dry. [Taylor laughs] And the second is that I have it up here in my house, and you should come see it sometime. It’s a beautiful little painting. Over the years we’ve talked a lot about painting and art brut and naïve art and things like that. But it’s just one of my favorite paintings ever.

LT: Sweetie. I’ve got the one that you made for me with a three on it and a man’s face. I’m holding it in my hands right now. It’s so great that we’ve got each other’s little projects. Are you still in that house in Los Angeles?

JD: Yeah, still there, same joint. What used to look like Dracula’s castle now looks like Dracula’s castle crossed with Toys R Us.

LT: [laughs] The light from the kids has really brightened up the place, huh?

JD: Toys are everywhere. It’s madness.

LT: That’s sweet for the kids.

JD: Yeah, they are good kids. Really good kids. I’m so happy you’re writing. I remember when I was in New York a couple of years back, and you were working with all these little kids with that group.

LT: The 52nd Street Project.

JD: You slayed me with that. I thought it was such a brilliant thing.

LT: Oh, man, yeah. I haven’t done anything with them for a while, but they’re such a great organization. I actually just took a full-day workshop on teenage relationships and how to talk to kids about sex. I got a little certificate. But I was thinking about the 52nd Street Project the whole time and about how successful they’ve been, working with kids in the city who have to deal with a lot of stuff that kids in the suburbs maybe don’t have to confront so much. I’m sure that’s something that you think about too, with your kids.

JD: Oh, absolutely. [flicks lighter]

LT: You puffin’?

JD: Oh, just a little.

LT: Are you smoking Drum?

JD: Uh, yeah---well Bali Shag. [laughs] But I’m not far away from quitting. I’ve cut down quite heavily.

LT: Have you?

JD: Way down. It’s such a dumb addiction.

LT: I know. It’s a bitch.

JD: And with the kiddies, man, just being a parent---you start to worry 10 years ahead of the curve.

LT: You have a girl and a boy.

JD: Lily-Rose is 6 and a half years old now, and little Jack is 3 and a half. When I told my brother that we were going to have Lily, he congratulated me and said, “It’s the greatest thing you can do. Nothing will make you happier.” And then he said, “You’ll never have another calm moment, and you’ll never sleep the same way again.” And it’s absolutely all true, a thousand percent. [laughs]

LT: You’ve been doing some movies lately that your kids can enjoy, like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After the workshop I went to, I really got to thinking about that. Obviously, I’m not a social worker. I’m an artist, and that’s what I do. So the question I keep asking myself is within what I do, what can I do?

JD: Well, you have a great conscience, and you care about what’s happening out there---
what’s going on, what’s going wrong, and what we can make go right. You’ve always been very smart about the choices you’ve made, and you have really taken great care with the things you’ve done.

LT: That’s what’s also been so great about seeing your career grow the way it has. There were times when people didn’t really see what you were doing or didn’t catch the movies you were in, and now it’s finally like, “Yeah, look what he’s been doing all along.” I particularly like Pirates of the Caribbean [2003]. The attention you got for that was so fantastic, because I think it showed that we as actors can think outside the box, and that there’s actually a lot more possibility out there than people have realized. What I’ve also loved about you are your relationships with directors---the trust that they have in you, and the trust you have in them.

JD: That’s everything, isn’t it, to have that element of trust with your director. You’ve had that. You just did another film with Mary Harron, the Bettie Page movie.

LT: Right. The Notorious Bettie Page. But I’ve never done a character like the one you did in Pirates. How were you able to go in there and come up with a character like that and have it also be so organic and genuine? It’s just pure imagination. I also know that you use music in your acting. It is just so much part of your life.

JD: Must is everything, sure.

LT: Once I’m listening, I love it, but I don’t necessarily turn it on. I’d like to start being that person who turns it on. I actually have an iPod, and I’ve gotten much more into music since I got one.

JD: I remember, years before there was an iPod, when we were in that tiny little hotel doing Arizona Dream. You were listening to quite a lot of music then.

LT: Most of it was on those fantastic tapes you were making for me. You made one called “Another Stretch of Doom” and one called “Put a Cow in my Pocket.”

JD: I still listen to all the same stuff---you know, Big Star and everything. It still kills me. Anything recent you’ve been listening to?

LT: Petracovich.

JD: Petracovich?

LT: Yeah. And Architecture in Helsinki.

JD: What?

LT: Architecture in Helsinki. Love ‘em. And CocoRosie? Anthony and the Johnsons.

JD: Wow. I don’t know them at all.

LT: I guess it’s already happened. I’ve crossed over into music land.

JD: Good for you, man. I think that’s going to be a very important thing for you when you’re directing your movie. It’s rhythmic on one end and emotional on another end. It will be your pal for sure.

LT: Johnny, I’d love to see your kids. I do free babysitting.

JD: Cool, I’ll take it. You haven’t met Jack yet. He’s such a little guy. Both my kids are so much fun, but it’s amazing how different they are. Lily is so girlie and so refined. And Jack is just a thug. He’s just a dude. [Taylor laughs] I can’t wait to see you. Be well.

LT: You too, doll.

Depp to play Hutchence?

Producers of the Michael Hutchence biopic are trying to convince Pirates Of The Caribbean star Johnny Depp to play the late INXS frontman.

The film is being fast-tracked and most of the production will take place in the singer's homeland of Australia.

In addition to Depp, film-makers are also looking to cast Eric Bana, Sienna Miller, Naomi Watts and Rachel Griffiths in the movie.

The film's tentative title is Slide Away, which refers to the duet Hutchence sang with U2's Bono, according to website MovieHole.net.

Contrary to press reports that the late singer's family was not happy about the film, producers say Hutchence's estate is cooperating with the production.

The movie's director Nick Egan, who directed some of INXS's most popular videos, has been working with the singer's brother, Rhett on the film.

Genius Products and The Weinstein Company have pushed back the street date for Laurence Dunmore's "The Libertine", which stars Johnny Depp (Charlie and the Chocoalate Factory, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3), John Malkovich (Colour Me Kubrik, Being John Malkovich) and Rosamund Pike (Doom, Pride and Predjudice). Originally scheduled for June 27, 2006 release, it will now be hitting shelves on July 4, 2006. Specs still have yet TBA. Stay tuned, we will bring you the latest details as soon as they arrive.

Adapted by Stephen Jeffreys from his own play, this is based on the true story of John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, who was a poet, courtier and notorious rake. Johnny Depp stars in "The Libertine" as the scandalously decadent John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester.

The film follows the Earl's adventures in London, from his passionate romance with a young actress, Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton), to the writing of a scurrilous play which blisteringly and bawdily lampoons the very monarch who commissioned it, Charles II (John Malkovich), leading to the Earl's banishment and eventual downfall.

From AV Press Release
'Pirates' sequels to be filmed in AV
This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press on Tuesday, April 18, 2006.

By LAVENDER VROMAN Showcase Assistant Editor
PALMDALE - A popular Disney movie franchise will soon be walking the plank at the former aircraft production hangar where Steven Spielberg's "The Terminal" was filmed.

The Los Angeles World Airports Board of Airport Commissioners on Monday approved a use permit for Second Mate Productions Inc. to film portions of two sequels to 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" in Hangar 703 at 30th Street East and Avenue P.

The production company plans to start a seven-month residence on May 1 at the Site 9 facility on Palmdale Regional Airport property, adjacent to Air Force Plant 42. According to the board's agenda, the project would generate about $616,400 in rental payments to LAWA.

Second Mate Productions intends to use the 264,000-square-foot hangar "for various production and filming functions, including the construction of a film set," according to the agenda. The company will also use "40,000 square feet of the west half of the high bay area" in Site 9's Hangar 704.

In 2003, hangars 703 and 704 served as locations for Spielberg's romantic comedy-drama "The Terminal," starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

A production crew for the film spent about six months at the site and constructed a massive airport set in Hangar 703. The facility more recently played host to a special effects crew shooting "green screen" footage for "Mission Impossible III."

The approximately 1-million-square-foot Site 9 facility originally was built by Rockwell International - which later became part of The Boeing Co. - for production of B-1B Lancer bombers. After that, the hangar was occupied by the now-defunct aircraft maintenance and renovation firm SR Technics.

The airport authority, which owns and operates Los Angeles International, Van Nuys, Ontario and Palmdale airports, terminated SR Technics' lease on the property and took control of the facility in 2003.

"Dead Man's Chest," the first sequel to "Pirates of the Caribbean," is scheduled for release on July 7. The film stars Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. A second sequel is tentatively scheduled for release in spring 2007.

The latest on the 21 Jump Street movie
Posted by Clint Morris on April 17, 2006

Remember those rumours of a “21 Jump Street” movie a while back? Been a while hasn’t it? I believe it was actually 4 years ago that the project was first announced. So what’s happening with it? Does anyone care? And has Richard Grieco had any of his calls returned?

Unfortunately, someone hasn’t taken a mallet to it. Sigh. It’s merely simmering away…and seemingly will, as long as it takes to rid of anyone connected to the original TV series to become disattached. The Lion roars. The cat hisses. The drooling dog barks. Ben Willis sharpens Hook.

Here’s the latest.

Apparently a lot has changed since the trades initially announced its conception, with original TV star Dustin Nguyen (seen recently in the grand oz-made flick "Little Fish") telling Australia's FILMINK magazine that the film’s original writers, Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh, are now off the project. The studio has replaced them, for reasons the actor isn’t sure of.

Can someone cue that ‘we’re doomed style’ music?

They were the ONLY HOPE for the project. Thankfully, Cannell is still attached to work on the “Greatest American Hero” movie – a series he also created – but his dearth from “21” is sure to meet with an Antarctic response.

Oh, and how does that affect Nguyen? Well apparently, Cannell, who created the TV show, as I said, was writing a role for Nguyen into the script – no doubt, reprising his role as Harry Truman loki - despite the fact that it was going to centre around a “New Generation” of undercover young coppers. Now, according to the actor, ‘none’ of the original bunch will be back. Yep, you can stop calling Grieco.

We’re talking “Dukes of Hazzard” fiasco here fans. I say bring on the telemovie, from Cannell, with the original cast (maybe Skeet Ulrich can replace Depp? Nobody will notice…. much), and beat the feature film to the punch!

Celine Bags Covered In Glitter Glue? Sacre Bleu!
Don't worry...it's for charity

Friday, April 14, 2006

(PARIS) Talk about a high-end art project! Armed with sequined-ink pens, erasers, glue, and tubes of paint, 19 celeb kiddies were given carte blanche to draw on Celine’s cult Poulbot bag, resulting in a sparkly crop of one-of-a-kind totes that will be auctioned off at a dinner at the Hotel Bristol in Paris on May 30, with proceeds to benefit Rêves, a charity to fulfill the wishes of sick children. The lucky artists included the fashionable spawn of Emmanuelle Seigner and Roman Polanski, Elodie Bouchez, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Sophie Marceau, Carla Bruni, Emmanuelle Béart, and Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp. Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes, covered her bag with red lips, while Amaël, son of Alexandre de Betak and model Audrey Marnay, drew a train coming through a mountain surrounded by fish in water with bedazzled purple stones as air bubbles.

The upcoming event marks the third time Celine’s Poulbot charity project has organized an event where international stars have joined forces for a good cause. In previous years, the project raised funds for major causes in London and Korea.  Fittingly, the Poulbot bag, launched three summers ago, is an homage to Parisian street kids frequently sketched by poster artist and illustrator Francisque Poulbot from 1900 to 1930. His works were so popular that his models were soon themselves called little “poulbots”.

Madonna's children Rocco and Lourdes have decorated handbags for fashion house Celine that will be auctioned off for charity next month.

The fashion company asked 19 celebrity offspring including the children of Emmanuelle Beart and Audrey Marnay, to customise its canvas Poulbot bag.

The proceeds from the sale will go to actress/singer Vanessa Paradis' charity Reves, which helps sick children realise their dreams.

Paradis' children with actor Johnny Depp, Jack and Lily-Rose, have also designed bags for the cause.

The French fashion house sent the necessary design tools, from felt-tip pens to feathers to the children to help with their projects.

Madonna's daughter nine-year-old daughter Lourdes covered her bag with red lips, while her five-year-old son Rocco sketched colourful drawings of small animals on his bag.

The bags will be auctioned off at a dinner at the Hotel Bristol in Paris, France, on 30 May (06)

The rise and rise of the roll-up - now Customs clamps down
By Jason Bennetto, Crime Correspondent
Published: 17 April 2006

Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson are partial to them, Johnny Depp has his with a hint of licorice, and Jeremy Irons can make one single-handed while driving. The common thread for this elite group of actors is that they all roll their own cigarettes.

Despite health warnings, their love of a DIY smoke is shared by a growing number of British people. One in four cigarettes consumed each year in the UK is a "roll-up".

The proportion of smokers who make their own has doubled from 11 per cent in 1990 to about a quarter today.

But with the growing popularity of hand rolling tobacco has come a new market for criminals. Just over half of all the roll-ups smoked in Britain are made with illegal tobacco. While customs officers have managed to significantly reduce cigarette smuggling, they are struggling to combat the boom in illicit rolling tobacco.

In order to get the problem under control, and to claw back some of the estimated £900m lost in unclaimed revenue every year, HM Revenue and Customs is about to deploy 200 extra officers to target the tobacco gangs. New laws that could see tobacco manufacturers fined up to £5m are also coming into force later in the year.

The vast bulk of illicit hand rolling tobacco is being brought in by crime gangs in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, where lower taxes mean it is far cheaper than in Britain.

The tobacco is smuggled in either by ferry passengers, or in batches of at least 100kg in heavy goods vehicles. Cheap air travel has meant that tobacco smuggling at airports has also increased.

Smugglers will go to great lengths to hide their goods. In Southampton last month, Revenue and Customs officers discovered 2.4 tons, enough for about 50,000 packets of tobacco, stuffed in the padding of kitchen stools that had been packed into 40ft containers.

Even selling the pouches of tobacco at discount prices to the public, the smugglers make from £1 to £3 profit for each pack.

"These people are serious organised criminals whose smuggling techniques are akin to those used by drug traffickers," explained Paul Gerrard, deputy head of the Enforcement and Compliance Operations at HM Revenue and Customs.

The gangs, which increasingly involve eastern European and Asian criminals, will sell the illicit goods on the street, in pubs, clubs, markets and car boot sales. Holloway Road in north London is a notorious strip for the sale of counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco.

The huge profits made by smugglers was illustrated in a court case in Scotland in August last year. Tariq Din, 45, was jailed for four years and was stripped of almost £2m in assets. Din and his highly organised gang smuggled in massive amounts of Golden Virginia rolling tobacco. Nicknamed the "King of the Roll-Ups", he had a team of drivers who would ferry cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco into Britain from Luxembourg.

The illicit market is dominated by a few brands, particularly Drum, Old Holborn and Golden Virginia, that have been manufactured in the UK, exported, and smuggled back to the country.

Smokers in the Midlands, the South-west and the North-west are the biggest consumers of roll-ups, with two out of every five "rollies" being smoked in those regions.

Stung by the hundreds of millions of pounds being lost in tax revenue, the Government has set HM Revenue and Customs new targets for reducing the illicit hand rolling tobacco market by 1,200 tons - about 20 per cent - by 2007-08.

The measures include 200 extra staff to work exclusively against the smuggling and selling of illicit rolling tobacco.

There are already 1,200 officers combating all forms of tobacco smuggling. New laws coming in later this year will fine tobacco manufactures up to £5m if they fail to control their supply chain. Manufacturers have also agreed not to over-sell tobacco to countries, so that criminals cannot buy up unwanted stock.

Saturday, April 15
JACK SPARROW HAS NOT LANDED: Rumors have been flying in town about an impending home sale. Some whispers mention Johnny Depp's name and others have heard that a mysterious businessman from New York City might be looking for a retreat, a place to relax and wind down.

The home on Bunker Road started its life as a ranch house, and just driving by, that's what it appears to be. But after additions, people who have seen the home close up have called it everything from "The Plastic House" to a garish Taj Mahal.

A few weeks ago, rumor was an unidentified party had placed a large sum of money to secure the approximately $2 million home for a right to first refusal.

But a few nights ago, word was the offer was withdrawn. Town officials, who have stayed mum on the subject, confirmed the down payment had been withdrawn, but would not say if they even knew who placed the offer.

Still no word from Depp's publicist if he was the one actually looking at the house, which one town official said was "ridiculous" considering Depp's jet-set, Hollywood lifestyle.

"Why would he want to come to Dummerston?" asked the man.

STOP. HEY. WHAT'S THAT SOUND?: Two legislative committees were in Brattleboro this week, taking testimony from local people about emergency planning.

They wanted to hear how residents felt about all sorts of disaster preparedness. But naturally, concerns about Vermont Yankee were the evening's dominant theme.

We don't expect our lawmakers to be expert at everything; certainly not when it comes to audio equipment. So it was no surprise that there was some persistent trouble with feedback from the microphones they'd set up at the Brattleboro Union High School gym.

When each resident took a seat before the microphones to say their piece, and when each resident left, the entire audience was shocked with an unearthly, almost unbearable frequency.

During a particularly painful dose of feedback, one cheerful participant -- who may or may not be named Gary Sachs -- hollered, "Hey, that sounds just like the steam line at Vermont Yankee!"

The joke was lost on lawmakers, but it definitely was not on the local crowd, who have been closely tracking the saga of VY's uprate and the "acoustic noise" it's been causing.

THE PROGNOSIS IS GOOD: WOW received a call from Joyce Kaine on Thursday. She called to let folks in Windham County know her husband is doing well.

Jason Kaine, a Vermont State Trooper and a leukemia patient, traveled to Duke University in North Carolina earlier this year for a stem-cell blood transfusion for treatment.

Kaine has an unusual gene that made it almost impossible for him to find a donor. Instead, Kaine was accepted into a program at Duke, using stem cells from fetal cord blood.

According to Joyce Kaine, her husband is still weak but is improving daily. Kaine said the transplant process itself went well and was told by his doctors that he responded to treatment "better than any patient they've ever seen."

Still, there is a 40 percent chance Kaine could get sick again. If he continues getting healthy, the Kaines will be back in Windham County in early May.

Joyce Kaine once again sent thanks to the local community, which has embraced their cause, holding fundraisers and blood draws to benefit her husband.

On Thursday, Gary Lynde of Lynde Well Drilling in Guilford, was working on the Kaine's home at no cost. Joyce Kaine said they had been having a problem with water pressure in the home and Lynde offered to fix it for free.

"I felt they had enough on their plate to deal with," said Lynde, who added he's never met the Kaines. "Everyone in the business talked about it and we decided to help."

From Carol  found at Wikipedia (not confirmed)

Since 1998, Paradis has been in a relationship with American actor Johnny Depp, with whom she has a daughter, Lily-Rose Melody (born May 27, 1999), and a son, Jack John Christopher III (born April 9, 2002). Paradis caught Depp's eye in a hotel lobby in Paris while he was there shooting the film The Ninth Gate. They are distant to the world of fame and protective of their privacy. They divide their time between a house in the Hollywood Hills and a villa in the South of France, they also own apartments in Paris and Manhattan. Paradis's 2000 album Bliss was dedicated to Depp and their daughter. In April 2006, the couple announced that they were expecting their third child together.

(Note from Kazren: I found this same paragraph HERE without the sentence about her being pregnant.  The last sentence may be some fan's addition.  I am still looking into this, but I would consider it pure rumor at this point.  Wiki Pedia, Carol's source, has this  paragraph with someone questioning the information right below and I quote: "Who the hell is writing this? Who have they confirmed it to?".
I would assume this is pure rumor at this point.)

Genius Products will be releasing director Laurence Dunmore's gripping and powerful drama "The Libertine", which stars Johnny Depp (Charlie and the Chocoalate Factory, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3), John Malkovich (Colour Me Kubrik, Being John Malkovich) and Rosamund Pike (Doom, Pride and Predjudice) onto DVD June 27th. No further news is available at this time.

Last night in Palexpo, the German brand Mount Blanc celebrated its 100 years. Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis flew in from LA, without a stopover, on a private jet at a cost of 350 000 Swiss francs. The couple looked nice/cute and tanned but didn't speak, a person in charge said this was a stipulation of their contact.

Depp sings sailor songs with Bono

The Pirate's and sailor's life seem to have inspired Johnny Depp since "Curse of the Black Pearl.".

We've known for a long time that Depp has a musical vein.  His love of music led him to play in "The Kids" at the beginning of his musical career, and to him playing the guitar in "Chocolat," and he and his dearest Vanessa Paradis worked together on her album "Bliss".

Now the 42 year old will attempt a duet with Bono.  However this will not develope into a  normal U2 Song, but a it will be a yarn for sailors. Depp and Bono built a studio in Dublin for themselves just to produce the CD there. The two were inspired to make this different album by Depp's success as Captain Jack Sparrow in "Curse of the Black Pearl".

Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, A Pirate's Life for Me...

On the CD will be heard among other things Songs like "The Dying Sailor to of His Shipmates". In addition, Depp and Bono invited other musicians to play on the CD.  Some of the collaborators are Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Brian Ferry.  The second Pirate  adventure (film) will premiere the in July. Captain Jack Sparrow will be a double pack.

Johnny Depp & Vanessa Paradis awaiting third baby?
April 6, 2006 at 8:41 am

Is the Pirates of the Caribbean star expecting baby #3 with his French love, Vanessa Paradis?

At Montblanc’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in Geneva on April 5, Hello! magazine spotted Depp in the pregnancy “tell” pose: One hand on the potential mama’s belly, with head down to look at aforementioned belly.

There’s no obvious baby bump yet, so only time — and, hopefully some sort of publicist’s announcement — will tell.

Meanwhile… what’s with showing up at some the corporate schmoozefest? The actor usually keeps a pretty low profile, and is photographed primarily attending industry award shows. In this case, however, Depp’s relationship with the Montblanc brand goes beyond any love of free pens. In 2004-2005, the actor worked with the company in a fundraising effort to “focus on the neglected resources of children’s arts education curriculums and why it is essential to overturn this trend.”

The couple are already parents to 6-year-old Lily, and Jack, who is almost 4.

Geneva became the hottest city in Europe this week as a host of stars including Orlando Bloom and girlfriend Kate Bosworth jetted into Switzerland for a string of swanky parties. Also in the country to enjoy some Alpine hospitality were Johnny Depp and fashion princess Naomi Campbell.

After enduring months apart from on-off love Kate during the filming of Pirates Of The Caribbean 3 last summer, it's clear that Orlando was reluctant to let her out of his sight.

The Hollywood lovebirds were wrapped round each other all evening, chatting intimately and laughing at a glamorous Forties-inspired bash thrown by Swiss watchmakers IWC at an aircraft hangar in the city's airport.

The swoony actor did turn his attention briefly to one other cool blonde. Twenty-nine-year-old Orlando found time to talk with his Lord Of The Rings co-star Cate Blanchett as they wandered amongst the vintage Spitfire and Junker airplanes that were the focal point of the reception. In the spirit of the event the Aviator actress was dressed in an chic tailored suit.

Across town another loved-up couple was also setting the flashbulbs blazing. An elegantly suited Johnny Depp arrived at a do with his leading lady Vanessa Paradis.

The delicious Charlie And The Chocolate Factory star set tongues wagging by tenderly patting Vanessa's stomach leading to speculation that the couple are expecting another addition to their family. The gorgeous twosome are already parents to Lily, six, and Jack, who is days away from his fourth birthday.

'Pirates' could be filming at Site 9
From making bombers to building movie sets
By Jim Skeen, Staff Writer
LA Daily News

PALMDALE - The sounds echoing from the former B-1B bomber plant might be going from the roar of jets to calls of "Yo ho, yo ho, the pirate's life for me."

The plant, known as Site 9, is being considered for use as a soundstage for a movie company filming the two sequels to "Pirates of the Caribbean." Second Mate Productions is looking to rent the site's two massive hangars for seven months from Los Angeles World Airports.

The proposed rental agreement is due to come before LAWA's board of directors April 17.

If a rental agreement is approved, the company would rent the two hangars, at Rancho Vista Boulevard and 30th Street East, for $616,000. The production company would rent all of hangar 703 and up to 40,000 square feet of hangar 704 for the movie work, according to LAWA.

"LAWA wants to do everything it possibly can to keep as much filming activity in Southern California as possible and the Palmdale site is turning out to be a very attractive venue," said LAWA spokesman Paul Haney.

If the production company opts to rent the hangars, it would continue Site 9's recent track record as a soundstage.

One of the site's hangars was used the 2003 Steven Spielberg movie "Terminal," featuring Tom Hanks. For that film, a 2 1/2-story replica of an airport terminal was built, complete with some 40 retail shops and restaurants.

The two hangars were built by Rockwell International during the 1980s for the assembly of 100 B-1B bombers.

Banderas set for Broadway return

NEW YORK, April 4 (UPI) -- Spanish actor Antonio Banderas says he plans to return to Broadway in a new musical based on the 1995 film, "Don Juan DeMarco."

The star of the new dance movie, "Take the Lead," earned a Tony nomination for his performance in the 2003 musical, "Nine," based on Federico Fellini's film, "8 1/2."

Banderas told UPI Monday he will return to Broadway next year for the show, expected to be helmed by his "Nine" director, David Leveaux.

The film "Don Juan DeMarco" was about a masked man (Johnny Depp) who believes he was the world's greatest lover and the retiring psychotherapist (Marlon Brando) assigned to "cure" him.

"I think it actually will be an interesting play," Banderas said. "I think it is a very smart proposal for theater."

Banderas emphasized, however, not all movies have the stuff to be Broadway musicals.

"If the proposal is good, like 'The Producers,' for example, they are very welcome. But, sometimes, they are just like 'Boom!' and they fall," he said, adding a positive side of Broadway adaptations is they often introduce new generations to movies with which they may have been unfamiliar. "As was the case with '8 1/2' by Federico Fellini. So, it absolutely can work."

DAY & NIGHT

ON A recent trip to London, actor Johnny Depp engaged in the time-honoured British custom of chowing down on some fast food after a night out. Rather than a homegrown take-away, the Pirates Of The Caribbean star apparently splashed out on air-freighting over hot-dogs for himself and his friends from a favourite eatery, Pink's hot dog stand in Hollywood. The cost of the feast was £1,200, which seems a little excessive for 48 hot-dogs with all the trimmings. Wouldn't they have gone cold and congealed after a long-haul flight?

A Reminder - Johnny is expected to appear at the Kids Choice Awards Saturday evening on Nickelodeon.

The AFI DVD for 2005 is out and it features the entire 54 minute interview with Johnny.
