Sexy Depp and Bale Are Public Enemies in Chicago
Fri, 06/19/2009 - 5:00am by PopSugar![]()
Johnny Depp looked dapper all dressed up in pinstripes with his costar Christian Bale at the Public Enemies premiere in Chicago last night. Marion Cotillard looked lovely in a summery pink dress while Christian's wife Sibi kept it simple in black. Johnny stopped to sign autographs for his very enthusiastic and screaming fans in the city where the bank robber and main character, John Dillenger, did his damage. As with all of Depp's roles, he did a lot of research and spoke about his respect for the criminal character he'll be promoting for the next few weeks. This is one of the Summer blockbusters we've been counting down the release for, how about you?

Johnny Depp Pursues Public Enemies
(these are larger than the ones above)Johnny Depp suits up in Ralph Lauren Purple Label and signs as many autographs as he can at the premiere of his new movie Public Enemies at the AMC Theater on Thursday (June 18) in Chicago, Ill.
At the premiere, the 45-year-old actor said of his character John Dillinger, “He was a deeply loyal guy, which I think is probably rare for someone in his line of work.” John Dillinger was a bank robber in the mid-western United States during the 1930s, who some considered to be a modern-day Robin Hood.
The film was shot on location in Chicago and Indiana. “I adore Chicago. I love it, I love it here,” Depp told CBS.

In the action-thriller “Public Enemies,” acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard in the incredible and true story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Depp).
Dillinger is the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the No. 1 target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger. No jail could hold him.
His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone from his girlfriend, Billie Frechette (Cotillard), to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.
But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang (later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson [Stephen Graham]) thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate the FBI his bureau of investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first public enemy No. 1 and sent in Purvis (the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI”).
However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) who were real gunfighters and orchestrating epic betrayals from the infamous “Lady in Red” to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti were Purvis and the FBI able to close in on Dillinger.

RED CARPET | Depp, Bale charm screaming crowd at film premiere

BY BILL ZWECKER Sun-Times ColumnistThe Chicago premiere of filmmaker Michael Mann's ''Public Enemies'' drew hundreds of film fans to the AMC River East 21 theaters on East Illinois Street Thursday night, and judging by the adoring screams, it was clearly due to two men: Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

For Depp, playing John Dillinger fascinated him because he personally identified with a lot of traits of the notorious gangster -- ''except, of course, all the criminal stuff," Depp said. "First and foremost, he possessed a very strong loyalty, not only to his friends and family, but to his woman. He was a deeply loyal guy. Very rare for a man in his line of work.''
As always, Kentucky native Depp did a lot of research on the character he portrayed. ''One of the best parts of that was I got to go to Wrigley Field a lot when we weren't filming last summer. Went as much as I could, just like Dillinger,'' said Depp with a wink.
''I'd like to set the record straight, in case anyone's wondering: John Dillinger was a big Cubs fan.''
As for the enduring intrigue with Dillinger? Depp thinks it's because he got away with it for a long time.
"He was a man of the people. The banks were the enemies, just as they are now. Funny similarity, huh?
''Plus the government was doing shiftier things than the bank robbers. Hmmm ... that sounds familiar too, doesn't it?''
Bale, who plays idealistic FBI agent Melvin Purvis, agreed with Depp about Dillinger's lasting legacy. ''He created a sort of Robin Hood myth about himself. He wasn't giving the money back to the poor, but he wasn't taking it from them either.''
Given he's shot two major films in Chicago, including ''The Dark Knight,'' Bale was succinct when asked his first thought when he thinks about this city: ''Big portions.''
Though not in the film, actor William Petersen was right at home on the red carpet.
''First of all, I'm currently working at Victory Gardens in the Biograph Theater, where Dillinger was killed.
''And Michael Mann hired me for my first film, 'Thief,' and then we made 'Manhunter' together. That's a special connection.''
For Mann, a Humboldt Park native who has frequently made movies in his hometown, he loved being back.
''I get back here every excuse I get," he said. "My mom still lives here, but more than that I love working in this place. I think it's the most vibrant, exciting city in America."
