What’s the status with the big screen version of Dark Shadows that you’ve been planning to do for years? “Well, Dark Shadows is happening. Tim is working on Alice In Wonderland, at the moment, which is obviously quite a large piece of work there. So when Tim is done with Alice and we get the script, the script is very, very close, we get the script in order, we’ll probably attack it next year which is exciting, very exciting. Like a lifelong dream for me.”You’ve really have been fascinated with Dark Shadows all of your life? “I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins, and I have like photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six or something. (laughs) I’m very excited to do it.”

Johnny Depp to lurk in 'Dark Shadows'
By Rick Porter
Posted: Saturday, Jun. 27, 2009Johnny Depp and his frequent collaborator Tim Burton have a followup to their version of "Alice in Wonderland" lined up: an adaptation of the cult-classic TV series "Dark Shadows."
Depp said at the Los Angeles premiere of "Public Enemies" earlier this week that Burton will direct a film based on the 1960s daytime soap about 200-year-old vampire Barnabas Collins. Depp's production company acquired the rights to the show in 2007.
"'Dark Shadows' with Tim will also be down the line," he told Entertainment Weekly. "Tim has to finish ('Alice in) Wonderland' before he can start work on the next film."
Depp stars as the Mad Hatter in Burton's version of "Alice," which is due theaters in March 2010. He's also starring in an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "The Rum Diary" next year and has several other projects in various stages of development.
Depp will play Barnabas Collins in the "Dark Shadows" movie, and he says he'll be "thrilled" to work with Burton again.
"I was a big fan of it when I was a kid," Depp tells EW, "and I think it is another of those perfect projects for Tim to reimagine."

Johnny Depp Reveals His Upcoming Projects, ‘Pirates 4? And ‘Dark Shadows’

Johnny Depp projects
That image up there is a scan of card that “Public Enemies” star Johnny Depp held in his hands. MTV’s Josh Horowitz handed it to him, because the actor has so many projects flying through the rumorwaves that it’s hard to keep track.
Depp’s big reveals were that he’ll be occupied next year with both the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie and the long-talked-about adaptation of the UK vampire TV series “Dark Shadows.” That’s not all though. Slipped into the seemingly offhand comment is Depp’s confirmation that rumored director Tim Burton is indeed involved with the project. Fantastic news. As you saw yesterday, Burton and Depp make magic together. Check out a video of Josh’s time with Depp after the jump or head over to MTV.com to see the full interview in MTV Rough Cut: ‘Public Enemies’.

Johnny Depp, Tim Burton on board for 'Dark Shadows'Jun 25, 2009, 02:55 AM | by Adam Markovitz
At the LA premiere of Public Enemies, Johnny Depp confirmed that he'll star in an upcoming big screen version of the cult 1960's show Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton. Rumors of the project have circulated ever since Depp, an admitted fan of the gothic soap opera, acquired the rights to the series in 2007.
Producer Richard D. Zanuck confirmed Depp and Burton's involvement last December, but this marks the first time that Depp has publicly said that Burton will direct. "Dark Shadows with Tim will also be down the line," Depp told EW June 23 in LA. "Tim has to finish [Alice in] Wonderland before he can start work on the next film. I love what he did with that. I think people are going to be so excited and satisfied when they see that film. Some of his best work. And I will be thrilled to work with him again on Dark Shadows. I was a big fan of it when I was a kid and I think it is another of those perfect projects for Tim to reimagine."

A Japanese press schedule published by Warner Bros., which you can see in its entirety here, has the Johnny Depp-produced Dark Shadows feature film positioned for a winter 2010 release. That's just overseas, but it gives you a good idea of when the studio might have it ready for us here in the States.Last month, Sam Sarkar of Depp's Infinitum-Nihil hinted that big announcements were regarding the project were coming soon. He would not confirm or deny that Tim Burton, who's at work on Alice in Wonderland, was going to direct. Depp will most definitely start as Shadows' Barnabas Collins.

Dark Shadows Envelop Johnny Depp, Drift Toward Tim Burton Infinitum-Nihil, Depp's production company, confirmed that Depp is still connected to the project, hinted it might develop as a supernatural franchise, and waffled on whether Tim Burton will assume the role of director, Ditzian reported.Dark Shadows was a popular afternoon tv show that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971. Among the regular characters, Dark Shadows starred Jonathan Frid as the vampire Barnabas Collins, Grayson Hall as doctor Julia Hoffman, Nancy Barrett as Carolyn Stoddard, Joan Bennett as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, Alexandra Isles as Victoria Winters, Louis Edmonds as Roger Collins, Katherine Lee Scott as Maggie Evans, David Selby as Quentin Collins, David Hennessey as David Collins and Lara Parker as Angelique.
The Dark Shadows tv show was set in coastal Maine where eerie storms and looming cliffs provided the backdrop for one angst-ridden scene after another. The theme music by Robert Cobert alone was enough to raise neck hairs. You can listen to the Dark Shadows opening theme here,as well as some of the other memorable music from the series.
For those not old enough to remember Dark Shadows, kids rushed home from school to settle in and watch it for its 5 year run. The tv show plot spanned multiple generations and told the tale of 200 year old vampire Barnabas Collins.
Will a Dark Shadows movie be competitive with the new generation of gothic dramas? Although it was extremely popular during its short run, and fans were devastated at its end, those fans are now age 50 or so. For a Dark Shadows movie to be commercially viable today, it is going to have to reach a generation which gobbled up Anne Rice stories, views True Blood on HBO, and eagerly awaits the next Twilight movie. These fans are accustomed to dramatic special effects and gore at a level that was not only unheard of when Dark Shadows aired, it was entirely unnecessary. The series effectively communicated fear with imagery, music and acting.

Johnny Depp’s ‘Dark Shadows’ Adaptation ‘Very Active’…With Tim Burton Directing?
Published by Eric Ditzian on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 1:32 pm.'Johnny Depp'Supernatural gothic sagas are crazy hot right now: HBO’s “True Blood,” those “Twilight” flicks everyone keeps talking about, plus a host of upcoming films like Benicio Del Toro’s “The Wolfman” and Nicolas Cage’s “Season of the Witch.” Even “Spider-Man 4”’s rumored villain is a vampire. Another of these Zeitgeist-y projects is the Johnny Depp-starring adaptation of the 1960s soap opera, “Dark Shadows,” which had been in development even before this obsession with monsters, ghosts and witches took hold.
But since word of the planned film surfaced two years ago, reliable “Dark Shadows” news has been hard to come by. Now an executive in Depp’s production company, Infinitum-Nihil, which is developing the movie, confirmed some details for MTV News, left others up in the air, and hinted that we might be seeing the makings of a new supernatural franchise.
Most importantly, we wanted to know if Johnny Depp is still attached to star. “Indeed he is,” confirmed Sam Sarkar, Infinitum’s director of development.
When it came to those Internet rumors about Tim Burton signing on to direct, though, Sarkar was somewhat more circumspect. “I can neither confirm nor deny that,” he said. “But I know it’s out there in the ether.”
Sounds like a deal is not yet in place but that Burton, who’s currently busy with another Depp-staring movie, “Alice in Wonderland,” tops Infinitum’s list of prospective directors. Of course, Depp and Burton have a long creative history together, from “Edward Scissorhands” to “Ed Wood” to “Sweeney Todd.”
While all the pieces are not yet in place, “Dark Shadows” is still very much a go at Warner Bros. “All I can say is that one is very active,” Sarkar said. “The studio will be making some announcements regarding it pretty soon. Very soon, probably.”
“Dark Shadows” premiered on ABC in 1966. Gothic romance, ghost stories, plots involving vampires, zombies and time-travel—the daytime soap had it all, and it became a runaway hit for the network over 1,225 episodes. The task facing producers is simply finding a way to shape a movie around such abundant, wide-ranging material.
“It was a soap opera—it was a daily show,” said Sarkar. “That’s something people forget. It’s one thing to adapt a weekly television series into a movie—it’s another thing to take a soap opera that’s been serialized daily and try to boil it down to two hours.”
As much as they’ll be forced to change and excise, they’re also committed to honoring an adored show. “I think it will be very true to the spirit of ‘Dark Shadows,’” Sarkar told us. “I think there’s going to be an authenticity to it.”
Any modifications will be made with the blessing of the mind behind the original series. Said Sarkar, “When Dan Curtis, the creator, was still alive, I met with [producer] David Kennedy, who originally brought the project to us and Curtis, and David has always been very adamant that there are certain things you should definitely take liberties with.”
And if the “Dark Shadows” film turns out to be a success, there’s a good chance it will spawn a franchise. “Obviously, it’s a movie that can continue,” said Sarkar, “because there were so many things going on in ‘Dark Shadows.’”
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton together—enough already or gimmie more? Who else would you like to see cast in the film?

Johnny Depp Closing in on Dark Shadows AdaptationJohnny DeppVampires have never been more popular than they are right now due to the phenomenon known as Twilight and shows like HBO's "True Blood", but the granddaddy of all soapy vamp themed stuff has always been Dan Curtis' "Dark Shadows". A feature film re-imagining of this famed series may be even closer than we thought.
According to the MTV Movie Blog Sam Sarkar, an executive in Depp’s production company, Infinitum-Nihil, hinted that we might be seeing the makings of a new supernatural franchise.
Sarker went on to confirm that Depp is still very much attached to star in the film but it's up in the air whether or not long-time Depp collaborator Tim Burton will step aboard to direct.
"While all the pieces are not yet in place, Dark Shadows is still very much a go at Warner Bros," Sarkar tells MTV. “All I can say is that one is very active. The studio will be making some announcements regarding it pretty soon. Very soon, probably.”
