MTVMoviesBlog is reporting that Johnny Depp's production company Infinitum-Nihil says Depp is still onboard to play dreamy vampire Barnabas Collins in a big-screen adaptation of Dark Shadows -- producer Dan Curtis' supernatural soap opera, which set your mom's, and grandmom's, pulses racing and hearts fluttering back in the '60s. Find out what Depp's people are saying after the jump!

"All I can say is that one is very active," says Sam Sarkar, Infinitum's director of development. "The studio will be making some announcements regarding it pretty soon. Very soon, probably."

Regarding whether or not Depp's frequent collaborator Tim Burton will direct, Sarkar says, "I can neither confirm nor deny that," he said. "But I know it's out there in the ether."

JOHNNY COME LATELY? Tim Burton May Push Back 'Dark Shadows' Start Date

With Johnny Depp getting so much advance buzz for Public Enemies (Michael Mann's summer movie for Universal), his upcoming projects are news. Now I'm told that Tim Burton may have to postpone the start date on his and Depp's hotly anticipated Dark Shadows, their Warner Bros film version of the gothic TV series with a huge cult following. It was June, then August, and now maybe not even this fall.

First, any rumor that Burton may bail altogether is "definitely" not true, says my insider: "He loves the project". But his helming of Alice In Wonderland for Disney -- and people who've visited the set tell me it looks amazing -- is demanding more time than originally planned. Now Burton is facing a hot delivery date for a March 5, 2010 release. And so he’s exploring pushing back the start date for Dark Shadows.

I'm told the postponement hasn’t yet been presented to Warner Bros. Another of my sources says the studio has already reserved stages. "It is our intention to still start the movie in the fall. We're trying to work it out," a Depp insider explains to me. "And Tim Burton is Johnny's first and only choice to direct."

Warner Bros purchased the film rights to the TV series from the estate of Dan Curtis (the creator, producer and director of Dark Shadows). Depp is both starring and producing through his Infinitum Nihil company which his sister runs. It's true that Depp has had a long obsession with playing Barnabas Collins. Tim Burton signed on as director last June with John August scripting. Originally, a start date had been scheduled for August but then was pushed back to the fall.

After taking some time off, Depp does have a movie inbetween Public Enemies and Dark Shadows -- The Rum Diary, which starts March 30th and which he's also producing.

OHDEARGAWD I am SWOONING!

Why didn't some one tell me this EARLIER! I am so HAPPY! This article is dated: Friday, 27 July 2007 Link and YESTERDAY a new post you can find here!

The thought of this is just so damn YUMMY!

Some forty odd years ago a soap opera began its run, which would eventually take it to 1245 episodes by the time it went off the air in 1971. But this was no garden variety soap opera. This was "Dark Shadows".

Did you think Joss Whedon was awarded the patent for the vampire with a soul tormented by its own nature by virtue of his television Dark_shadows_barnabasshows "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel"? No, of course not. You'll slam that Anne Rice tome on the table with a smirk worthy of a US president. But before there was a Louis or a Lestat, there was Barnabas Collins.

It wasn't until episode 210 that the show really took off and racked up increasingly better ratings. That's when the petty criminal Willy Loomis, indulging in a spot of grave robbing to augment his pinched finances, released the vampire Barnabas Collins, played by the Canadian Shakespearean stage actor Jonathan Frid, from the Collins family mausoleum, where he had been imprisoned since the late 18th century.

Originally the character was only meant to be one in a series of villainous protagonists over a hundred or so episodes. But when ratings skyrocketed and fan-mail started pouring in from smitten viewers plans were hastily redrawn. Looking older than his 43 years at the time, and hardly what you'd call conventionally handsome, aside from playing what was still a rather clearly evil character, Frid was an unlikely candidate for romantic heartthrob. But viewers had obviously caught on to the undertone of tragedy which he had brought to his portrayal of Barnabas Collins.

The character created by Frid and Curtis, the angst ridden vampire anti-hero with genuinely tragic dimensions, doomed to forever struggle with his own nature and seeking redemption, would become the model without which such later works as Anne Rice's vampire novels and Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" might never have been.

Dark_shadows_cast_large Besides vampires, the show, on a budget you could fit in a smallish piggy-bank, ran through the gamut of Gothic plots, creatures and things that go bump in the night and knocks over the cardboard sets. It was laughable, it was over the top, it was fun, and surprisingly often it was heart-wrenchingly moving.

It managed the feat of being self-consciously goofy and dead serious at the same time. And it introduced house-fraus, and geeky kids like Tim Burton, to the heady brew of undiluted grade A Gothic Absinthe.

Two subsequent attempts were made to revive the show, with less than stellar results. And with the death of orginal producer Dan Curtis last year, it looked like the the crypt door had finally slammed shut on "Dark Shadows".

But according to trade magazine Variety, via Filmstalker, Johnny Depp's  production company Infinitum-Nihil, GK Films, and Warner Bros. have signed a deal with the estate of the late Dan Curtis, and secured the rights to develop a feature film based on the show. Depp and Graham King will produce with David Kennedy, who ran Dan Curtis Prods. until Curtis' death. There's no word on who would direct, and indeed no word on whether Mr Depp would take on the signature role of Barnabas Collins himself. But it would seem the obvious choice, especially considering his personal attachment to the character:

Depp_from_hellDepp has said in interviews that he has always been obsessed with "Dark Shadows" and had, as a child, wanted to be Barnabas Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series. (Swoon! I should never doubt WHY I love him!)

From the John August board, news that he met in Paris with "two other jet-lagged" people - coincidently, the same weekend Johnn & Tim Burton were in Paris!  You can see the photos of Johnny in Paris HERE

Exclusive - Producer Richard D. Zanuck talks DARK SHADOWS
12/3/2008
Written by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub

Just a few hours ago I attended the press day for the upcoming Jim Carrey comedy “Yes Man”. After sitting in on the press conferences, I managed to get a one on one with producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Heyman. In case you don’t know who David is…he’s produced all the “Harry Potter” movies. And if you don’t know who Richard D. Zanuck is…he’s as close to Hollywood royalty as anyone in the business as his dad was Darryl F. Zanuck and he started 20th Century Fox back in the 1930’s!

So, as I said, Hollywood royalty.

In the coming days I’ll have the entire video interview with these two great producers, but I wanted to post what Richard said about “Dark Shadows” immediately.

As most of you know, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have been rumored to be making a film adaptation of the popular 1960’s show for awhile now. But with the way it is in Hollywood, you never know if a project is ever going to come together. Add to that, we’re talking about two of the biggest people in Hollywood and since they have their picks of the best scripts and projects; you never know what they’ll do next.

But according to Mr. Zanuck, “Dark Shadows” is going to be Tim’s next project after “Alice in Wonderland” and they’ll be shooting it next summer in London!

Here’s what he said. Look for the entire interview soon.

Tim Burton's Next is Dark Shadows?
December 4, 2008

Collider.com talked to producer Richard D. Zanuck, who says that director Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are making Dark Shadows next summer and that it's Tim's next project after Alice in Wonderland.

The film, written by John August, is based on the cult '60s supernatural TV show created by Dan Curtis. Johnny Depp would play Barnabas Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series.

With over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap-opera that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies that ran from 1966 - 1971 and featured actor Jonathan Frid as Collins.

Burton & Depp Enter Dark Shadows

We reported way back in 2007 (right here) that Johnny Depp wanted to work on a film adaptation of cult US TV show Dark Shadows, a Gothic soap opera that Depp was apparently obsessed with as a child. Well, it's just moved that little bit closer: producer Richard D. Zanuck told Collider.com that it will be the next project for Tim Burton to direct, and will be starting next summer.

The plot follows a governess who arrives at the Collins family mansion to discover that all is not quite normal - and that paterfamilias Barnabas is, in fact, a vampire. Cue 1,225 episodes of Goth-tastic drama in what was basically a soap with fangs.

This will be the eighth time that Depp and Burton have worked together, and will follow pretty much straight on from their current collaboration on Alice in Wonderland, wherein Depp (somehow inevitably) plays the Mad Hatter. By our calculations, that makes them Hollywood's bestest best BFFs - but by any mathematical standard you can name, the combination of director, actor and subject matter for Dark Shadows sounds well-nigh unbeatable.

New novel quenches Easton's 'Soul'
Posted By PAULETTE COHN

Michael Easton (John McBain, "One Life to Live") takes a walk on the dark side with the release of his graphic novel "Soul Stealer," a tragic love story illustrated by Christopher Shy.

"Soul Stealer" began as a screenplay, but Easton couldn't quite get it right. Then one day while going through art books in a record store in Los Angeles, he found a book by Shy -- and realized it was exactly what he had been looking for.

In "Soul Stealer," Easton and Shy have created a world so intriguing that "Soul Stealer: Book 2" is already scheduled for release in 2009 -- with a possible movie down the line, but only if it is done right.

"I actually have flown (to Los Angeles) a couple of times and had meetings at studios," Easton says. "I am pretty adamant that I would have to write the script. The nice thing about having a day job is you are not that eager."

Easton will be in Orlando, Fla., on Nov. 15 and 16 for the annual ABC SoapNet Super Soap Weekend, and he's looking forward to hearing fans' opinions of his novel. "It is just nice to get people's feedback -- to look them in the eye and hear what they have to say," he says.

Dear Paulette:The person who wrote asking about the new version of "Dark Shadows" may have been referring to the unaired 2004 pilot starring Alec Newman as Barnabas Collins. In it, Victoria Winters was played by Marley Shelton, and, as far as I can tell from Wikipedia, she has no soap opera background. I, too, would love to able to see that version. Maybe the upcoming Johnny Depp remake will generate enough interest for the 2004 pilot to be released. --Brian C. via Internet Dear Reader:Thanks for the clarification. "DS" has some passionate fans, who also wrote to tell me of a Web site dedicated to the 2004 pilot: www.barnabasundead.comand www.collinwood.net.I also want to point out that the Depp "DS" movie is only in development right now, not a done deal, so don't expect anything before 2010.

Johnny Depp's 'Dark Shadows' On Hold for 'Pirates 4'!
Fri., Oct. 17, 2008 8:49 AM PDT, by Eric Walsingham

If may be so bold to say so… I am sick of Captain Jack Sparrow. Yes, he was a great character and Johnny Depp did a great job creating him/playing him but, honestly, Depp is an incredible actor and I’d much rather prefer to see him play other roles and exercise his craft than have to watch him dress up like the same character three more times. By now you might be wondering what warranted this attack on Captain Sparrow. Well, according to Entertainment Weekly, Depp’s vampire project Dark Shadows (which Tim Burton has been attached to direct for quite some time) has been put on hold indefinitely to make way for a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean pic. Shadows is a gothic-horror tale centering on the life of vampire Barnabas Collins and his run-ins with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts. The film is based on the popular late ‘60s television series.

Another Depp project, Shantaram, is suffering the same fate, and is also being taken off the table to make way for Pirates 4. Who is letting this happen? And more importantly, who cares about Pirates of the Caribbean? The first one was great. The second suffered the same fate of every franchise that tries to bridge their second and third films together instead of treating them as separate but equal films – it sucked. And the third one sucked and made absolutely no sense but distracted the head-scratchers with its crazy visual effects. Let’s get Depp out of the pirate uniform and let him show us what he’s really capable of!

UPDATE: Johnny Depp's 'Dark Shadows' Put On Hold?
Thursday, October 16, 2008
By: MrDisgusting

UPDATE INSIDE: Some bad news for horror fans looking to see Johnny Depp return to the genre as Entertainment Weekly reports that the two of his upcoming projects appear to be on hold. "Two long-discussed Depp projects appear kaput for now: SHANTARAM, based on a novel about a heroin addict's adventures in India, and the movie version of the '60s vampire soap Dark Shadows, a childhood favorite of the actor's." Warner Bros. Pictures was set to bring SHADOWS to the big screen.

UPDATE: Tim Burton tells the Los Angeles Times, "Oh I don't know. Take one at time, you know? It's something I'm interested in of course. Definitely."

I guess that means there's a glimmer of hope?

Over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies. The show has a continuing rabid fan base that populates Dark Shadows Festival conventions. Numerous TV revivals of the series and pic adaptations have been attempted over the years but none with as high-wattage a star as Depp.
