At the start of the film we get the whole Wonka backstory.

When he's a little boy he goes trick or treating at halloween. He comes back home (he lives on this road of gorgeous gothic grey terraced houses with colour-coordinated doors/curtains etc) with a big bag of sweets, and his dad (Christopher Lee) who's a dentist grabs the bag off him and throws it into the fire, where they burn . Can't you just see it already- the little boy shot from above clutching the bag, then a shot of Lee from his point of viev towering over him imperiously, (I imagine lit from the fire, so with that flickering gothic quality). Fantastic and so splendiferously Burton.

Later he's a teenager and peers in the window of a sweet shop and sees them making chocolate. He comes home and his dad tells him the day he becomes a sweetmaker, he'll (the dad) leave and he'll never see him again. So Willy Wonka buys the sweetshop and he comes home and his house is gone - as if lifted completely away out of the terrace - so the ones either side are now beside each other.

How AMAZING is that?!?!?
