Johnny was born John Christopher Depp in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963.  He was raised in Florida and at the age of 12 his mother bought him a guitar.  After his parents divorced, he dropped out of school at age 17 ant turned all his attention to his music. He played in a series of garage bands, including The Kids, which once opened for Iggy Pop.  He was married to Lori Anderson in 1983 in Florida, moved to Hollywood,  then they divorced in 1985.  Depp got into acting his former wife introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage, who in turn introduced him to his agent.

Johnny made his film debut in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street.. He got the role because the producer's teenage daughter thought he was dreamy.  "They paid me scale, so I went from making $25 a week to making $1,200 a week. My intention was to pour that money back into the band but roles kept coming, and pretty soon I discovered I was an actor."

In 1987 he won the role of Tom Hanson in FOX Televsion's first hit show, "21 Jump Street."  While filming 21 Jump Street, Johnny dated such Hollywood actresses as Sherilyn Fenn and Jennifer Grey.  The rise to fame was meteoric thanks to the popular TV series.  Johnny had signed up for the show thinking it would last maybe one season, but mostly because of his popularity, the show ran strong.  See our TIMELINE for more details on all of his films.

After starring in Cry-Baby for John Waters (during a summer hiatus in between seasons of 21 Jump Street), the director gave Depp a book of medical and surgical oddities.

After they co-starred in Arizona Dream, Jerry Lewis gave Depp his lucky leather boots.

Researching a role he didn't get, Depp was briefly a pen pal of Charles Manson.

Depp owned the nightclub where River Phoenix overdosed in 1993.

In 1990 he began dating Winona Ryder.  He had "Winona forever" tattooed on his arm while engaged to Winona Ryder.  After they broke up he had the tattoo reworked to read "Wino forever."

His collaboration with director Tim Burton  began when he portrayed the title role in Edward Scissorhands. The quirky films success allowed Johnny to pick and choose his roles and he became known as an actor who was serious about his career, often portraying the odd-man-out character with dark and idiosyncratic roles.  His critical acclaim and increasing popularity was fueled again when he teamed up with Tim Burton again playing the lead role in Ed Wood. He had broken up with Winona and was dating Kate Moss by this time.

In 1994, while staying at a swanky New York hotel, Depp was arrested after using his fists and combat-boots to smash a glass coffee-table top and other furniture in his $1,200-a-night suite. Roger Daltrey, staying in the next room, complained about the noise. Depp maintained that an armadillo had leapt out of a closet and done the damage, but armadillos are uncommon in New York City, and the animal was never found.

In 1997, he shifted gears when he portrayed undercover FBI agent Donnie Brasco opposite Al Pacino, followed by the 1998 film, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.  In 1999 he appeared in the Sci-fi thriller with Charlize Theron, The Astronaut's Wife before joining Tim Burton again in Sleepy Hollow.  Basing his brilliant performance on "Angela Lansbury, Basil Rathbone and a pre-pubescent girl," Johnny played Ichabod Crane with charm and endeared his fans even more.

Johnny went on to play another historic detective,  Inspector Fred Abberline,  in From Hell which was released in 2001.  At the end of 2002 and beginning of 2003 he filmed J.M. Barrie's Neverland - due out October 2004.  In the summer of 2003, Johnny starred in the Disney blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl playing Captain Jack Sparrow as only he could.  Next his psychotic and sociopathic character, Agent Sands, stole the show  in Robert Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time in Mexico in 2003.

Johnny is currently filming Libertine with John Malkovitch which will be followed by another film with Tim, Burton in the screen adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Also in the future he is doing Rum Diaries, based on another book written by gonzo journalist Hunter T. Tompson, and two sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean, rumored to be shot simultaneously.

Since 1999 Johnny has been  living with French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis with whom he has two children; Lily-Rose Melody born in May 27, 1999 and Jack born in April 9, 2002.

For Pirates of the Caribbean, Depp says he modeled his pirate on Keith Richards. "I thought of Keith because he's a guy I've admired for many, many years. I didn't want to do an imitation of Keith, or a character study, just a kind of salute to him, you know, to show him I appreciate him. I was thinking about the pirates of the 18th century, about how they were the rocks stars of their day. So I thought: Who's the greatest rock and roll star who ever lived? And to me, it's Keith Richards hands down. Keith is a bit of a pirate himself!"He wanted ome of his teeth to be goldcapped for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), but knew that the directors would never agree, so he went out and got lots more than he wanted capped. He then showed the directors, and they decided to make him give up a few, so he got some taken off. He had only gotten the extras so he could negotiate with the directors, while pretending that he wanted all his teeth capped.

Johnny completed filming "Libertine" and the US release is set for September 16, 2005,

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was realeased July 15, 2005 and he is currentlye filming Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 in Los Angeles and the Caribbean.

"My self-image still isn’t that 'all right'. No matter how many people go to see my movies I still have that idea that I’m that pale no-hoper that I used to be. A pale no-hoper that happens to be a little lucky now. Tomorrow it’ll be all over."  --Johnny Depp

Shot all of his scenes in 9 days for _Once Upon A Time in Mexico (2003)_ , but after his filming was done he didn't want to leave. So he suggested to 'Robert Rodriguez' that he play a small part, the priest that Antonio Banderas talks to in the church, and use his Marlon Brando impression.

Has something in common with actor Robert Englund, famed for portraying dream-stalking Freddy Krueger in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies. Both of them appeared in the first A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984), and both had played characters with blades for hands: Englund as Freddy Krueger, and Depp as the title character in Edward Scissorhands (1990). And, strangely, both of them were born in June, with their birthdays three days apart, and they both share the same height, which is 5'10".

A movie buff (with a somewhat encyclopedic knowledge of older films), he admits he watches few movies any more, other than the children's films that his "kiddies" prefer. He also enjoys most of them.

Loves watching animated films with his daughter such as Shrek (2001) and Finding Nemo (2003).

Co-owns a restaurant/club in Paris called Man Ray (named after avant-garde artist Man Ray) with Sean Penn and John Malkovich. The restaurant is located in a renovated theater and serves Tibetan cuisine.

He was voted the 47th Greatest Movie Star of all time by Premiere Magazine.

When he was cast as Willy Wonka, many newspapers published headings about "Depp's Willy" and "Deppy's Willy is a Bit Wonkier."

Apparently conceived his portrayal of Edward D. Wood Jr. as a cross between Ronald Reagan (the wobbly-headed thing), the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz (1939), and the voice of Casey Kasem.
